Par BURNS ROBERT. This second volume of the songs of Scottish poet Robert Burns ...(+)
Par BURNS ROBERT. This second volume of the songs of Scottish poet Robert Burns contains 70 songs excerpted from the chapter 'The Lasses' in a larger collection of 324 Burns songs compiled and researched by Serge Hovey. It includes songs expressing the poet's 'passion' for his wife Jean, and for 'that other species.' Robert Burns (1759-1796) spent his life collecting Scottish songs, using fragments of existing lyrics as the basis for his own poems, and wrote original lyrics for traditional melodies. Burns left for posterity about 270 poems and more than 300 songs which are usually printed without their tunes. Serge Hovey meticulously examined Burns' own sources, letters, and manuscripts to determine the origin of every tune and all the verses as well as Burns' intended match of words and music. He then arranged each song with highly imaginative and beautiful accompaniments geared for pianists with average skills. This volume is illustrated with reproductions of paintings, drawings, and prints. These volumes also contain a glossary of frequently appearing Scots words and insightful historical notes for each song. / Niveau : Intermédiaire / Scottish - Songbooks / Recueil / Chant

Song Cycle-1840 was Schumann?s famous ?year of song? that brought forth over 100 lieder. They included Myrthen op. 25 which he dedicated ?to his dear bride? Clara Wieck-Schumann. Besides famous songs such as ?Widmung? ?Lotosblume? and ?Nussbaum? to texts by German poets the collection also saw Schumann venture further afield whether to the Scottish Highlands with settings of Robert Burns or to Italy for the ?Venetian Songs? of Thomas Moore. Schumann specialist Kazuko Ozawa has examined the first edition of 1840 and all the manuscript sources. Among the dedicatory autograph copies she has also discovered interestingearly versions of individual songs that are here published in an appendix. Our Urtext edition is rounded off with an extensive history of how Myrthen was composed. This volume is a superlative addition to G. Henle Verlag?s series of Robert Schumann?s song cycles.

While Robert Burns is celebrated today for his body of poetry the composer of Auld Lang Syne was also the composer or arranger of more than three hundred songs. A Rosebud by My Early Walk is set to the traditional tune The Shepherdâs Wife and it was a favourite of drawing room musicians for many years. According to at least one researcher the ârosebudâ was the daughter of a family with whom Burns lived while recovering from a broken leg. The girl was just twelve years old and as a young musician played Burns's songs to him on harpsichord. The sheet music includes a version in C and in D.

Whereas âAuld Lang Syneâ may be considered the best-known Scottish son...(+)
Whereas âAuld Lang Syneâ may be considered the best-known Scottish song ever yet at the same time it is an obscure one for there are but few people who know the complete text by heart. After the familiar âShould auld acquaintance be forgot .....â many people take their refuge to lyrics like ârum tee dum ta dee ..... lah lah lah ........... for auld lang syneâ. Even in Scotland only a handful of persons know the entire text and are able to give a correct rendering of it. The current lyrics have been attributed to the Scottish poet Robert Burns. Burns however he did not write the whole poem : after he had heard an old man sing the centuries-old Scotchballad he wrote it down and added a number of stanzas (1788). Historical research teaches us that the ballad served many purposes both political and religious. Nowadays âAuld Lang Syneâ is sung as a Christmas Carol and it is also sung on New Yearâs Eve at the turning of the year. Apart from that though the song is also sung on many other occasions â sometimes with different lyrics which usually have Love Friendship and/or Parting as their themes as these go well with the fascinating melody. In this arrangement a low-sounding solo instrument is central. The harmonization in the accompaniment fits in perfectly with the sentiments this song will evoke. Should auld acquaintance be forgot And never brought to mind? Should auld acquintance be forgot. And days of auld lang syne? For auld lang syne my dear For auld lang syne Weâll take a cup of kindness yet For auld lang syne.

It is a surprising fact of Beethovenâs life that of all the categories of pieces he composed there are more settings of Irish songs than of any other type of music. Scottish poet Robert Burns convinced a Scottish music publisher to commission Beethoven to set his own words to Irish airs. The death of Burns in 1796 ended the project but Beethoven went on to harmonise and arrange the songs in 1814 through 1816 mainly and they were published though never achieved as great a popularity as a rival set by Thomas Moore. This simplified version for easy Cello and Piano was arranged by composer Hugo Cole an accomplished cellist who was for many years a music critic for theGuardian newspaper.

Also known as 'The Banks O'Doon' Ye Banks And Braes is a Scottish song written ...(+)
Also known as 'The Banks O'Doon' Ye Banks And Braes is a Scottish song written in 1791 by Robert Burns. In this song a young woman wanders the banks of the Doon river in Ayrshire. She is surrounded by the beauty of nature yet laments the cruelty that the world has shown to her - she can no longer take delight as she once did in the plants and flowers as they remind her of happier times spent by the 'bonnie' banks with her lover. The man that she cared for stole her innocence and left her and now she feels as if even the birds are mocking her with their chants. This setting for SA choir by Chris Hutchings breathesnew life into the traditional tune. The poignant lyrics are complemented by a beautiful gently rolling melody. Burns wrote three versions of Ye Banks And Braes all published the same year. This setting uses the lyrics that are currently known as the third version: 'Ye banks and braes o' bonnie Doon How can ye bloom sae fresh and fair; How can ye chant ye little birds And I sae weary fu' o' care!'
