Aztec Dances was commissioned by Christopher Orton with the assistance of the BBC Performing Arts Fund. The first performance was given by Christopher Orton (recorder) and Magdalena Nasidlak (piano) at a concert in the Manchester Midday Concerts series at the Bridgewater Hall Manchester in March 2010.The version for flute and piano was premiered by Wissam Boustany (Flute) and Aleksander Szram (Piano) at St James?s Church Piccadilly on Thursday 19 May 2011.1. Sacrificial Dance Composer's Note The idea for the genesis of thiswork and indeed its title and individual movements came after visiting an exhibition at the British Museum entitled Moctezuma ?Aztec Ruler. The exhibition traced the events following the election in 1502 of Moctezuma as Supreme Ruler of the Aztecs and the subsequent invasion of 1519 by a Spanish expedition led by Hermán Cortés ? an event that was to eventually lead to the demise of the Aztec civilisation.Part of the exhibition explored the role that music and dance played in Aztec life. The primitive recorder together with trumpets and drums were used as an important part of the formal ritual ceremonies (including rather gruesomely human sacrifice) that took place to appease the many Gods which the Aztecs worshipped as well as for other more informal occasions in their social and cultural life.I have tried to reflect some of these highly contrasting and dramatic ideas in this four movement work.        Edward Gregson

They are a lovely example of Classical style and detailed in a way that makes them a joy to perform and as they are less than 10 minutes long they are a perfect addition to a short recital programme.Wilhelm Popp studied with the great Louis Drouet in the 1850's and wrote many charming works for the flute this among them. In editing the Sonatinas I have tidied some of the articulation making the flute part consistent. Discrepancies between markings in the flute and piano part have been corrected. I have occasionally added some slurs where I feel the lyrical nature of a section might be enhanced shown as 'dotted' slurs. Where staccati appear to be missing I have added them. I have not on the whole added expression marks. I have not changed or removed original markings.'

Strathclyde Concerto No. 6 (Flute Part)-The solo flute here is kept in high profile by the absence from the orchestra not only of other flutes but also of violins and oboes; in addition the trumpets are used sparingly (they do not for instance play in the slowmovement) so that for much of the time the flute is playing against a mellow ensemble of clarinets horns bassoons and low strings. If this is nevertheless one of Davies's most open-spirited pieces that comes partly from theready flights of the soloist partly from its glockenspiel accompaniments in the outer movements (replaced by ticking claves in the Adagio) partly from the dancing character of so much of the music and partly from the harmonicclarity in a light region not far from C minor.Flute part with piano reduction of the orchestral score.

Variations Sur Un Thème De Mozart is a piece composed by Reynaldo Hahn and dedicated to Philippe Gaubert. Composed after a tune by Mozart and scored for the Flute this piece features a main theme and a total of seven variations which follow one another. The Flute score features many trills especially in the Variation 2 some fast rhythms and up to 6 flats on the key for the Variation 4. It would require a good mastery of techniques for these challenging parts. Reynaldo Hahn was a naturalised French composer conductor theatre director and singer. Best known as a composer of songs he also wrote many piecesand melodies for different instruments.
