Bright Star Of The West is a biography of one of the most important figures in Irish music in the 20th century. This is the first study focused on sean-nos a distinguished and beautiful repertoire and style and provides a unique exploration of gender and masculinity in Irish music. Bright Star Of The West is the winner of the Alan P. Merriam Prize of the Society for Ethnomusicology. Bright Star Of The West traces the life repertoire and influence of Joe Heaney Ireland's greatest sean-nós ('old style') singer. Born in 1919 Joe Heaney grew up in a politically volatile time as his nativeIreland became a democracy. He found work and relative fame as a singer in London before moving to Scotland. Eventually like many others searching for greater opportunity he emigrated to the United States where he worked as a doorman while supplementing his income with appearances at folk festivals concerts and clubs. As his reputation and following grew Heaney gained entry to the folk music scene and began leading workshops as a visiting artist at several universities. In 1982 the National Endowment for the Arts awarded Heaney America's highest honor in folk and traditional arts the prestigious National Heritage Fellowship. Although Heaney's works did not become truly popular in his homeland until many years after his death today he is hailed as a seminal figure of traditional song and is revered by those who follow traditional music. Authors Sean Williams and Lillis Ó Laoire address larger questions about song identity and culture. They explore the deep ambivalence both the Irish and Irish-Americans felt toward the traditional aspects of their culture examining other critical issues such as gender and masculinity authenticity and contemporary marketing and consumption of sean-nós singing in both Ireland and the United States. Comingling Heaney's own words with the

The Melakarta System-Elements of Indian Music introduces the Indian melodic sys...(+)
The Melakarta System-Elements of Indian Music introduces the Indian melodic system in an accessible manner within the realm of Western music theory. It demonstrates a new archetype in music composition for composers of any genre aswell as composition teachers and anyone interested in ethnomusicology. This book contains a set of 12 etudes for piano and transcriptions for classical guitar. Each etude is about one minute in length and utilizes notesfrom a particular Indian scale. An intermediate to advanced skill level is required to perform each etude. Practicing and performing these studies is an excellent way to expand one?s musical perspective beyond traditionaldiatonic scales. Indian music has intrigued the West for a long time but hasn?t always been accessible because of the absence of a systematic approach to theory and repertoire. Just as the Western harmonic system iswell developed the Indian melodic system is very advanced and equally established. The intermingling of these two worlds can inspire new exceptional sonic landscapes. Useful literature on the evolution of the Indianmelodic system is also included with notes on how it can be used as a modus operandi by Western musicians who wish to apply Indian scales in Western compositions and improvisations. Includes access to online audio.

Radio and Roots Music along the Red River-In Louisiana Hayride - Radio And Roots Music Along The Red River Tracey E.W. Laird documents the history of the popular radio station exploring the role that northwestern Louisiana played in the development of both country music and rock and roll. This interdisciplinary study that combines original ethnomusicology research with social and oral history. On a Saturday night in 1948 Hank Williams stepped onto the stage of the Louisiana Hayride and sang 'Lovesick Blues.' Up to that point Williams's yodeling style had been pigeon-holed as hillbilly music cutting him off from the mainstream of popular music. Taking a chance on this untriedartist the Hayride—a radio 'barn dance' or country music variety show like the Grand Ole Opry—not only launched Williams's career but went on to launch the careers of well-known performers such as Jim Reeves Webb Pierce Kitty Wells Johnny Cash and Slim Whitman. Broadcast from Shreveport Louisiana the local station KWKH's 50 000-watt signal reached listeners in over 28 states and lured them to packed performances of the Hayride's road show. By tracing the dynamic history of the Hayride and its sponsoring station ethnomusicologist Tracey Laird reveals the critical role that this part of northwestern Louisiana played in the development of both country music and rock and roll. Delving into the past of this Red River city she probes the vibrant historical cultural and social backdrop for its dynamic musical scene. Sitting between the Old South and the West this one-time frontier town provided an ideal setting for the cross-fertilization of musical styles. The scene was shaped by the region's easy mobility the presence of a legal 'red-light' district from 1903-17 and musical interchanges between blacks and whites who lived in close proximity and in nearly equal numbers. The region nurtured such varied talents as Huddie Ledbetter the 'king of the twelve-string guitar ' and Jimmie Davis the two term 'singing governor' of

No.3 WoO 2: Violin: Wiener Urtext
In Vol. 2 of the Violin Sonatas by Robert Schumann the Wiener Urtext Edition pr...(+)
In Vol. 2 of the Violin Sonatas by Robert Schumann the Wiener Urtext Edition presents the F.A.E. sonata jointly composed by Schumann Brahms and Albert Dietrich as well as the edited version with the movements of Brahms and Dietrich being replaced as third Violin sonata of Robert Schumann. The present edition is based on the edition published in 2002 in the New Schumann Complete Edition and thus on the latest musicological findings. In the case of the F.A.E. sonata this is mainly a matter of slight changes in the fields of dynamics and articulation. In the case of Schumann's third Violin sonata the present edition differs moresignificantly from the first edition published in 1956 and the slightly revised new edition of 1988. The order of the middle movements the accuracy of which could not be clearly determined up to now has been changed compared to the earlier editions because of newly found documents. In addition the repetition of the first section of the middle part notated in the first edition before the last 13 bars yet not intended by Schumann has been omitted. The repetition demanded by the composer however of the first eight bars before the beginning of the coda which is missing in hitherto publications has been added. Moreover in contrast to the first edition the new edition contains a variant for bar 100 in the first movement which was not written out in full by Schumann.

for Pianoforte and Orchestra op. 37-Urtext edition reflecting the latest musicological research. With many corrections in the solo part and orchestral parts.Piano reduction with a separate solo Piano part.A must for pianists orchestras and Beethoven scholars.Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No.3 is the only concerto where no authentic manuscript exists for the solo part. The autograph of the score is available whereby the articulation dynamics and pedal markings are for the most part absent. However Beethoven oversaw the first printed edition of the solo part (1804) with great diligence. Plate corrections bear witness to the care withwhich Beethoven placed slurs and pedal markings in order to be consistent and unambiguous. By means of a thorough examination of the sources this new Urtext edition presents many corrections in terms of articulation dynamics and notes. In particular the orchestral parts have been corrected for the first time since Beethoven’s lifetime.

This Concerto en Ut mineur for cello and piano was first published in 1947 by Editions Salabert being attributed to Johann Christian Bach with harmonization by Henri Casadesus. Certain musicological studies after its publication proved that the Concerto should not have been attributed to Johann Christian Bach after all as it had actually been composed “in the style of Bach” some two centuries later. Nevertheless the Concerto has been a success and is today often performed and studied closely.
