Mixed Barenreiter
When Queen Caroline the wife of King George II of England died on 20 November ...(+)
When Queen Caroline the wife of King George II of England died on 20 November 1737 Handel was commissioned to write an anthem for her funeral service. She was buried in King Henry VII?s Chapel Westminster Abbey on the evening of 17 December 1737 with Handel?s work performed after the funeral service. To emphasize the solemnity of the occasion he used a roughly 100-piece Orchestra and 80 Choristers. The piece is a so-called ?full anthem? consisting of an instrumental Introduction (?Symphony?) and thirteen interlinked choruses. The words were written by Edward Willes the Sub-Dean of Westminster at that time using passages from the King James Bible and theBook of Common Prayer albeit sometimes departing from the original wording. The absence of sections for solo voice has made this anthem a favourite among ambitious choruses and a highlight of any concert programme. Our edition contains the original unabridged version with English text. The 'Hallelujah' Chorus, arguably the most famous choral work of the western classical tradition, is the closing number of the second part of Handel's Messiah. Such is the strength of Handel's word setting that this empathic, triumphal paean retains its appeal in spite of the cultural overexposure and controversy to which it has been subjected, remaining a firm favourite with choirs. The premiere of Messiah was in Dublin in 1742 as the high point of a full season of Handel's work. It was a charity event, held in aid of local causes, and in order to get the maximum attendance at Neale's new music hall in Fishamble Street, men were asked to remove their swords, and ladies the hoops in their dresses. The tradition of standing during performances of the 'Hallelujah' Chorus, still indulged at some performances in Britains, is said to have been started by King George II at the work's opening run in London in 1743. / SATB Et Orgue

For the occasion of the coronation of King George II and Queen Caroline, which took place in Westminster Abbey on October 11, 1727, Handel wrote four splendid anthems and personally supervised their performance which was, according to all reports, one of great magnificence. The four anthems were enthusiastically received, and one or more of them has been performed at every British coronation since 1727. Anthem #2 ('The King Shall Rejoice'), although less well-known than Anthem #1, is an equally splendid example of Handel's ceremonial style - what Burney has affectionately termed his 'big bow-bow manner'. This work contains an opening Allegro, brilliant and elegant rather than pompous - a grandiose setting of 'Glory and great worship hast thou laid upon him' - and a lively fugal Alleluia as a conclusion. Arranged for four-part chorus of mixed voices with organ or piano accompaniment. Edited and with keyboard reduction by Edouard Silas. / Chant Et Piano

These four splendid anthems were composed for the coronation of George II in October 1727 and have since retained a position at the heart of the English choral tradition. The popular anthem Zadok the Priest has been performed at all subsequent coronations and Handel's other contributions to the royal occasion - Let thy hand be strengthened The King shall rejoice and My heart is inditing - have the same majestic grandeur with affecting contrasts between different sections of the sacred texts. The editor Clifford Bartlett has corrected various inconsistencies in Handel's score and completedetails of sources and editorial method additional performance notes and a critical commentary are included.
