Eric Harding Thiman the organist and composer died in London on February 13; he was 74. His musical training was with private teachers; he gained his FRCO in 1921 and became MusD (London) in 1927. From 1930 he was professor of harmony at the RAM and from 1956 to 1962 was dean of the faculty of music at London University. He was conductor of the Elysian Concert Society and Purley Choral Society and had been organist and choirmaster at the City Temple since 1957. A keen advocate of congregational singing he contributed an article on his methods to W. T. Whiteleyâ??s Congregational Hymn-singing in England and was chairman of the music committee of Congregational Praise. Hiscompositions include cantatas anthems and services.

Kantate Zum Himmelfahrtsfest. Par BACH JOHANN SEBASTIAN. On the 30th May 1726, as part of his third Leipzig annual cycle of cantatas, Bach directed the first performance of his Ascension Cantata 'Gott fähret auf mit Jauchzen'. The libretto was published at Rudolstadt during the same year without any indication of the autor's name, in a collection entitled 'Sonn- und Fest-Tags-Andachten über die ordenlichen Evangelia'. The libretti in that collection had already been used during the Church year 1704/05 at the Court of Meiningen; their author may have been Duke Ernst Ludwig von Sachsen-Meiningen./ Répertoire / Solistes SATB, Choeur SATB, 2 Hautbois, 3 Trompett
