'El Cid' musically portrays the thrilling adventures and conquests of Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, a nobleman and military leader in medieval Spain. This rewarding work uses an infectious Spanish rhythmic ostinato (3+3, 2+2+2 in 3/4 time) that undergirds the main theme, driving the piece as it builds. Par SHELDON ROBERT. Take a journey on the Silk Road, the ancient trade route that linked the Far East with the Western world in this imaginative piece by Robert Sheldon. Exotic harmonies combine with driving rhythms and colorful percussion to create a soundscape of shifting sands and faraway lands. A solo alto saxophone references the sound of a Turkish sorna to open the piece, leading to the persistent rhythm and modal melodies. Finger cymbals, shakers, and hand drums help to represent the culture of this remote part of the world. This invigorating work makes great use of percussion. Reminiscent of Holst's famous portrayal of Mars the driving rhythmic motif is immediately introduced with rhythmic hits reinforced in the upper brass and woodwinds. Several themes are layered for an effect that is easy to achieve with bands at this level. A brief lyrical section provides some creative harmonies which will help develop the musicianship of your band. The opening material then returns for a powerful conclusion. Highly recommended!

The Pagan Dances completes the cycle of four primitive works for symphonic band that also includes Visions Macabre Invocation and Toccata and Torch Dance. Lift-off begins with stately brass motives and sparkling percussion, then it is up, up, and away with woodwind flourishes. Par PEDERSON DAKOTA. Ambush by Dakota Pederson is a work that describes the fight of war and recounts a flanking ambush set out by soldiers as they close in on a victory. A fiery chord opens the work and is followed by a relentless melody, which is expressed through precise articulation. The work challenges performers to focus on articulation and expression, while giving the percussion section a driving rhythm to maintain the energy.
