Par CAMPO REGIS. The Wonder of Life s'inspire du célèbre choral efiehl du deine Wege ('Remets à Dieu ta route') de la Passion saint Matthieu de Bach. 'Ce choral me hante depuis mon enfance : j'y vois une idée de transcendance, de résilience, de joie, de sérénité, mais aussi une sorte de réponse à The Unanswered Question (“La Question sans réponse“) de Charles Ives', dit Régis Campo. Qui ajoute : 'Ma réponse se rapproche de celle que propose Leonard Bernstein dans l'une de ses conférences : 'Je ne suis plus très sûr de la question, mais ce que je sais, c'est que la réponse est Oui'. D'autres illustres compositeurs avant lui sont partis d'un matériau historique et tonal : citons Berio (Sinfonia, Rendering), Webern (dans son orchestration d'un extrait de L'Offrande musicale), Goubaïdoulina (qui cite la même Offrande musicale dans son propre Offertorium), Stravinsky (Variations chorales 'Vom Himmel hoch da komm' ich her'), ou encore Denisov (dans sa Partita d'après Bach). Régis Campo a confié le choral de Bach aux cordes, en l'étirant considérablement et en le transmutant sur une durée de près de douze minutes - la trame harmonique se fonde entièrement sur les accords parfaits de Bach. Le premier rang des cordes est composé d'un petit orchestre de 6 instruments (2 violons I solistes, 2 violons II solistes, 2 altos solistes et 2 violoncelles solistes) à la manière des concertos grosso de Corelli ou des Concertos brandebourgeois de Bach, ce petit groupe formant une manière de concertino. Sur le choral, l'orchestre joue par vagues des motifs sautillants caractéristiques de son univers musical à la manière d'un manège interstellaire : les cuivres apparaissent parfois comme des satellites en orbite autour d'une planète ! The Wonder of Life superpose par ailleurs deux temps : l'un est très lent et méditatif, l'autre est pulsé et joueur. La fin de l'œuvre pourrait donner l'impression d'une musique infinie et exprimant un certain abandon à la foi. Quant au titre de l'œuvre, il combine les titres de deux films de Terrence Malick, cinéaste que le compositeur admire particulièrement : To The Wonder et Tree of Life. Régis Campo a dédié son œuvre à une amie de cœur : la musicienne, comédienne et réalisatrice Coline Serreau, avec laquelle il partage son amour pour Bach. Haydn Symphony No.69 in C major (Laudon) (Hob.I:69) (Full Score) Letters of the composer have come down to us only on a few of Haydn’s symphonies, amongst them the “Laudon” Symphony Hob. I:69. In one of these letters, Haydn agrees to the publisher’s suggestion to name the symphony after the widely known and favoured general Gideon Ernst von Laudon (1717-1790). By using this name, both composer and publisher hoped to increase the commercial success of the work which possibly deserved a military eponym considering its instrumentation with timpani and trumpets. Also, the symphony requires two bassoons, but no flutes, corresponding with the available musicians at the court of Esterházy between 1775 and 1776. Par HAYDN FRANZ JOSEF. Along with Symphonies Nos. 79 and 81, Haydn's D-minor Symphony Hob. I:80 belongs to a set of symphonies that he completed in late 1784. He wrote them for his employer Prince Nikolaus Esterházy, his task being to entertain the prince with new music. The symphonies had to be suitable for the twenty-five to thirty musicians who were in the prince's orchestra. Continuing the cooperation between Bärenreiter and the G. Henle publishing company regarding Haydn's large choral works, operas and symphonies, this edition is based on the G. Henle Complete Edition of the 'Works of Joseph Haydn”. Bärenreiter has already published the complete performance material for several 'Sturm und Drang” symphonies and all the London and Paris symphonies./ Répertoire / Orchestre

Il Distratto. Par HAYDN JOSEPH. The six movements of Joseph Haydn’s Symphony No. 60 “Il Distratto” once served as incidental music for the comedy “Le Distrait” by Jean-François Regnard (1655–1709), which was performed at the Esterházy court in 1772. This consisted of an overture, four entr’actes – the play is in five acts – and a finale. But this composition is not merely a compilation of stage music: Haydn referred to it in letters as a symphony. As a “character symphony”, it takes up the subject of the play – human absentmindedness – which is expressed in music. The minuet and trio of the symphony, with their stylistic diversity (or rather lack of plan), “portray the musicians in great disarray” as a reviewer stated in the Pressburger Zeitung of 27 January 1776. He also wrote, “One must laugh out loud at the thought of it” concerning the final movement, in which the violins unexpectedly begin to tune their instruments after a few opening measures. These and other compositional effects make the symphony a prime example of Haydn’s musical humour and ingenuity. In continuation of the cooperation between Bärenreiter and G.
