The Maccabaean Revolt in the second century B.C. provided the background to the story that unfolds in Judas Maccabaeus. It is part of the history of the Ptolemaic and Seleucid Empires. This oratorio follows the story from the death of Alexander the Great in 323 B.C. up until Judas' march on Jerusalem in 164 B.C. With a libretto supplied by Thomas Morell Handel's great work was first performed at the Theatre Royal Covent Garden on April the 1st 1747 as part of his annual Lenten season of oratorios. By the time of Handel's death in 1759 Judas Maccabaeus had become the composer's second most popular oratorio having received 33 Londonperformances under the composer's supervision (Messiah had 36).For SATB soli SATB chorus and accompaniment. Par REGER MAX. Die Drei Chören (The Three Choirs) op. 6 are hardly mentioned in the young Reger's correspondence. The only meaningful reference is Reger's announcement to his London publisher George Augener on August 1, 1892: 'I will send the choruses op. 6 ? which your son liked very much ? to you tomorrow morning [...]'. George Augener had spent five weeks from undergoing treatment in Wiesbaden and had met on this occasion not only Hugo Riemann but also his 'favorite pupil' Reger. After the publication, the Allgemeine Musik-Zeitung remarked on the 'entirely Brahmsian character to the work'. It praised its polyphonic structure and its'romantic chiaroscuro [...], the effect of which the accompanying piano knows how to exalt excellently'. Par DVORAK ANTONIN. Antonin Dvorák?s impressive Stabat Mater for soloists, chorus and orchestra is probably the best-known of the composer?s sacred works. Some painful experiences in 1875 his first daughter died, and in 1877 he lost two other children in quick succession may have led to Dvorák?s preoccupation with the suffering of the Mother of God, who stands weeping beneath the cross of her son. The music enters into the different moods of the liturgical texts with great sensitivity. Nine movements in slow to moderate tempi serve as a kind of Passion meditation, before the ecstasy of a vision of the resurrection wins the upper hand at the end of the tenth movement. With our newly-publishedarrangement for chamber orchestra (flute, oboe, clarinet, horn, bassoon, timpani, and strings), smaller choirs now have the opportunity of performing this work without the choir being drowned out by a large-scale symphony orchestra. The symphonic character of the work is nevertheless preserved. This scoring offers an optimal balance between transparency and orchestral sound. All vocal parts (soloists and chorus) are identical with the original version. As in his Deutsches Requiem op. 45, in Nänie Brahms creates a musical connection between mourning and consolation in an incomparable way. Inspired by the model of classical Roman-Greek laments, the work adopts the classical verse form chosen by Schiller ? surely alluding to Feuerbach?s classically-inspired art.Scored for mixed chorus and orchestra, we are publishing the work in a modern Urtext edition. Weltliches Repertoire. Par . With his Hebrew Choral Songbook, Ohad Stolarz presents a new collection of classics of the musical repertoire in Hebrew, arranged by him for mixed choir a cappella. Many of these pieces are published in Germany for the first time; almost all of them are first published as choral arrangements. The first volume contains ten sacred and paraliturgical songs that may be sung at various occasions. Among these are the feast of Passover, the ?Ten Days of Repentance? in the month of Tishré and the Sabbath. The second volume contains ten secular songs that have become widely known in Israel during the 20th century. These songs are part of Israel?s cultural history and belong to its core repertoire. All Hebrew lyrics appear in transliteration underneath the music, translations in German and English and comprehensive annotation texts are located in the appendix.
