Strettamente collegato a un altro fondamentale manuale di arrangiamento, Arranging for Large Jazz Ensemble di Dick Lowell e dello stesso Ken Pullig, questo libro, come raccontato dagli autori nelle pagine introduttive, è maturato in tanti anni di attività d'insegnamento nell'ambito dei corsi del celeberrimo Berklee College of Music, e in particolare come appendice al corso denominato Chord Scale. In questo testo l'oggetto principale dell'indagine sono le tecniche di armonizzazione tradizionali e avanzate, moderne per l'appunto, per sezioni di fiati, da tre a sei. Il sottotitolo quindi (Arranging For Small And Medium Ensembles) è certamente più rivelatore sui contenuti del testo e sul progetto didattico che sta alla base di quest'opera. Gli autori ci guidano - con perizia, metodologia ed esperienza divulgativa, alle costruzioni dei voicing secondo la cosiddetta armonia terziale , ma introducono anche principi e tecniche per impossessarsi dell'armonia per quarte (voicing in fourth) e per seconde (cluster voicing), o del complesso lavoro sulle triadi estratte (upper structure triad): tutto questo ne fa un libro di armonia (in particolare sulla tecnica jazzistica di armonizzazione della melodia), oltre che di arrangiamento. Naturalmente il trattato non vuole e non può essere esaustivo di tutte le possibilità di scrittura per ensemble jazzistico: tuttavia, risultano una serie di interessanti suggerimenti che, ben applicati, possono far suonare un organico di medie dimensioni con la compiutezza di una compagine orchestrale. È un libro squisitamente tecnico, come progetto e come realizzazione che, da buon manuale, fornisce conoscenze tecniche, strumenti da mettere al servizio della propria creatività e personalità musicale, senza voler indirizzare esteticamente il lettore, pur mantenendosi in un sfera professionale e artistica di stampo tradizionale. Roberto Spadoni, curatore della traduzione italiana, ha poi voluto stilare un Piccolo Dizionario Tecnico dei principali termini in lingua inglese, un utilissimo strumento soprattutto per chi ha meno consuetudine con la materia.
