E J Moeran was a 20th century British composer of Anglo-Irish background who spent his early years in Norfolk and influences of folksong and programmatic elements can be easily heard in this composer’s main body of work. Moeran tended toward the smaller ensembles in his composition which gave an appropriate frame for his great lyric gifts.However in the second half of his life Moeran greatly extended his sensibilities and his musical palate to include more energetic and vigorous rhythms harmonic colours and tonalities. In Sinfonietta written in 1944 is a fine example of Moeran’s later work incorporating near bitonality as well as folklike strains in the variations.

Considered as a whole Moeran's music has a strong individuality and a very personal flavour. The recipe is the composer's own and there is none other like it. Yet though he has amply covered the field of orchestral music chamber music concertos and smaller vocal works one would not describe Moeran's as a varied talent. He keeps to his centre which is a purely musical one.

Britten's Irish Reel was composed in 1936 as title music for a documentary film made by Marion Grierson and Evelyn Spice. Around the Village Green was made for the Travel and Industrial Development Association, which explored the changes to rural life in East Anglia after the increased mechanisation of agriculture. In his incidental music, Britten incorporated a riotous medley of folk songs and other traditional tunes (including 'Early One Morning', 'The Vocar of Bray', and Sheild's 'The Plough Boy'), many of which were suggested to him by the Norfolk-based composer E.J.Moeran.

The Symphony In G for Full Orchestra was written in 1937 and first published in 1940. Lasting around 43 minutes it is often compared to Moeran’s Symphony of the same year as the two works are stylistically very similar.George Dyson (1883-1964) was a British composer organist and music teacher. He studied at the Royal College of Music under Charles Stanford and became a teacher at various public schools. He later became the Director of the RCM ensuring it stayed open during the Second World War. He is probably best remembered nowadays for his Anglican church music especially his settings of the canticles but he alsowrote a substantial amount of instrumental and secular choral music.
