French composer and conductor Henri Tomasi (1901-1971) published Concerto for Bassoon in 1957. As with his other wind compositions Concerto for Bassoon was well-received by audiences. Tomasi was born in Marseille but his Father and Mother were originally from La Casinca in Corsica. Despite being pressured in to musical studies by his parents Tomasi dreamed of becoming a sailor and during the summer he stayed with his Grandmother in Corsica where he learnt traditional Corsican songs. However in 1921 he began his studies at the Paris Conservatoire and went on to become a high profile composerand conductor. Tomasi did not forget his Corsican routes often incorporating into his compositions themes of the songs he had learnt during the summers with his Grandmother. The Concerto for Bassoon is in three movements; 1) Andante and Allegro 2) Serenade Nocturne and 3) Final-Saltarelle. This Tomasi piece is suitable to advanced bassoonists providing an exciting alternative addition to the instrument's repertoire.

Having won many prizes at the Paris Conservatoire during the 1920s-1930s Eugène Bozza went on to conduct the orchestra of the Opéra-Comique and to become Head of the Conservatoire in Valenciennes. As a major figure on the classical music frontline Bozza's compositions were well-received by audiences Récit Sicilienne and Rondo for Bassoon and Piano being no exception. This Bozza piece for Bassoon is expressive and virtuosic displaying the entire range of the instrument accompanied by rhythmic quavers and spread chords in the Piano. As music educationalist Paul Griffiths has written ofBozza's compositions 'his works reveal melodic fluency elegance of structure and a consistenly sensitive concern of instrumental capabilities.' Récit Sicilienne and Rondo for Bassoon and Piano is a highly suitable and exciting addition to the advanced bassoonist's repertoire.

Internationally acclaimed French composer Henri Dutilleux (1916-2013) followed the music traditions of Maurice Ravel and Claude Debussy yet implemented his own distinctive style. His Sarabande et Cortege for Bassoon and Piano displays influences of Debussy's eschewing of tonality and Ravel's inventive textures. These combined with Dutilleux's unique uses of structure and pedal points create a truly riveting piece for Bassoon and Piano. Sarabande et Cortege comes at the beginning of Dutilleux's career and was composed as part of a set of fourexam pieces for the Paris Conservatoire (1942-1950). Yet the popularity of all four pieces remains and they continue to be performed to this day. Elements like lyrical melodies and furious semiquaver passages make for an exciting piece for bassoonists.

As the title suggests this Sonatine by Alexandre Tchérepnin attempts to adapt the music to the surprise elements of sports. The Pianist in the first movement is portrayed as being 'defensive' while the Bassoon soloist is considered to be attacking the Piano much like Boxing. Movement two named Half-Time represents the rest that two players would be taking in the midst of a competition. Finally movement three - Race is in the form of a canon. The Bassoonist leads the race while the Pianist gradually closes the gap.

Part of the collection 'Nine pieces' for Bassoon and Piano regrouped and transcribed by Fernand Oubradous  Pièce is a work initially composed by Gabriel Fauré. Quite difficult it would match the skills and abilities of advanced players. This sensitive piece for Bassoon in E flat is quite melodious: the main theme introduced by the Piano is repeated by the Bassoon who will lead the music from that moment. Written 'Adagio molto tranquillo' it is quite slow and nice to listen to. It would be perfect to execute in a recital. Gabriel Fauré was a French Composer Organist Pianist and teacher. He is one of the most important composers of his generation with pieces such as 'Pavane' or 'Requiem'.

To this day Eugène Bozza (1905-1991) remains one of the most prolific composers for wind instruments despite being a violinist himself. His Fantaisie for Bassoon and Piano is no exception to the composer's success. During his studies at the Paris Conservatoire Bozza won prizes for Violin conducting and composition as well as the Grand Prix de Rome. He then conducted the orchestra of the Opéra-Comique and became Head of the Conservatoire in Valenciennes whilst remaining a prominent composer. Composed in 1945 Bozza's Fantaisie for Bassoon and Piano is a virtuosicwork addressing advanced features including complex rhythms chromaticism a wide range and articulation. As music educationalist Paul Griffiths has written of Bozza's compositions 'his works reveal melodic fluency elegance of structure and a consistently sensitive concern of instrumental capabilities.'

Composed by Eugène Bourdeau  Premier Solo (1894) is a fabulous piece for Bassoon and Piano written for the Paris Conservatoire contest. This edition was edited by G. Dhérin a professor at the Paris Conservatoire. Really rich but also challenging this piece is a standard of the Bassoon repertoire and would fit the skills of upper-intermediate players. It lasts for around 5 minutes. Eugène Bourdeau (1850-1925) was a professor at the Paris Conservatoire. He composed other pieces for Bassoon such as the 'Second solo' or the '30 Exercises'.
