Bizet Massenet Debussy Ravel. This series presents some of the most significant works of European and Latin American music from the last three centuries transcribed for chamber guitar ensemble (in formations ranging from duo to quartet). Beethoven's Piano Sonatas along with his Symphonies mark a peak in the Classical style of composition full of the hallmarks and innovations that are now regarded as characteristic of the very finest compositionalachievements. Aria was commissioned by and written for the remarkable tenor horn player, Sheona White. Philip Sparke had produced a CD recording with Sheona as soloist and had her wonderful sound in his ears while writing this piece. The work opens with an accompanied recitative, which leads to a change of key where the main melody is presented. This, in turn, serves merely as an introduction to another melodic idea, marked calmato. The piano accompaniment takes up this theme and then takes centre stage with a passionate repeat of the main theme, which is completed by the soloist. The piano then plays the calmato theme against which the soloist plays a counter melody. This leads to a return of the opening recitative which brings the work to a peaceful close.

B-Dur-Francesco Durante's Magnificat in B flat major is one of his most important works and also one of the most siginifcant settings of the Magnficat text here in cantata form. This work displays a mastery of the polyhonic style and though the use of certain pre-classical 'modern' elements its various forms never sound archaic rather the work presents a synthesis leading to a unique style. For a performance during the Christmas season Christmas hymns can be inserted between each of the individual movements.
