Allerheiligentag IV for viol. Par LINJAMA JYRKI. The material for Jyrki Linjama's Allerheiligentag cycle is a Finnish folk chorale for All Saints' Day (no. 146 in the Finnish Hymn Book). The first work in the cycle is a string trio (2007), the second a piece for orchestra (2009), and the fourth and fifth are solo works for viola da gamba (2018) and violin. The composer tells: 'The choice of topic and material was originally influenced by the place where the string trio would be premiered - the old church on the island of Seili (Själö) in the Turku archipelago. The bleak history of the mental hospital on the island invited images of suffering and death. Garth Knox is one of the most prominent violists of his generation, and as former long-time member of the Arditti Quartet he has developed and maintained a fondness of contemporary music. In the meantime, he gives concerts and teaches courses all over the world.With 'Viola Spaces' he wants to make contemporary playing techniques accessible to advanced players. Nico Muhly's My Days for ATTB choir and five Viola Da Gambas. Parts for five Viols.This 16 minute piece of sheet music was commissioned by Wigmore Hall and the world première was performed by Fretwork and Hilliard Ensemble at Wigmore Hall October 2 2012.'My Days is a ritualised memory piece about Orlando Gibbons (1583-1625) written for two ensembles whose recordings informed so much of my musical development. I feel like I spend half of my life trying to trick string players to play like Fretwork and vocalists to singlike the Hilliard Ensemble so it was with enormous pleasure that I composed this piece. The text isderived from Psalm 39 which Gibbons himself set as well as an account of Gibbons's own autopsy which is a poignant 17th century semi-anonymous text. One of the most thrilling things about the sound of five violas da gamba playing together is the sense of their phrasing being derived from vocal music but made somehow electric and ecstatic through ornamentation and the friction of the strings. The piece has an idée fixe based on a minor scale with two possible resolutions and many ornaments. In between iterations the voices in rhythmic unison intone the psalm. It isn't until the autopsy text arrives that the voices begin to split into more elaborate ?Gibbonsy? verses and responses. A series of semiimprovisedfragments on the text 'Take thy plague away from me' introduces the third section of the piece where plucked strings create a halo around the text 'hear my prayer OLord.' The piece ends with the ornaments wildly exploded over the voices singing two words endlessly repeated.' - Nico Muhly

Sainte-Colombe (2nd half of 17th century) Pour la Basse The pieces for Viola da Gamba solo from the manuscript M.3 of the Bibliothèque municipale of Tournus In 1992, in the French town of Tournus, an extensive anonymous music manuscript was discovered, which for insiders was nothing less than a sensation. For it turned out that 143 of the pieces in this collection of music for viola da gamba solo were by Sainte-Colombe, the most important viol player and composer in France before Marin Marais. Since, for various reasons, the manuscript is not easy to read for today?s players, we present here for the first time a practical edition that contains all of Sainte-Colombe?s pieces from the Tournus manuscript. The transcription into modern notation has been done with great care, and the original notation retained wherever possible. Sainte-Colombe?s music is so interesting for the performer because it violates many compositional and musical rules, and as a result often seems improvised. Its soothing and frequently melancholy character is unique. It represents a challenge that every viola da gambist should take upon him/herself.

Arranged for Flute (TWV 40: 26-37). Par TELEMANN GEORG PHILIPP. Georg Philipp Telemann composed thirty-six fantasias for solo instrument: twelve each for traverse flute, violin, and viola da gamba. While those for flute and violin belong to Telemann?s most popular works today, the fantasias for viola da gamba were unknown throughout much of recent history until a copy of these fantasias was rediscovered in 2015. For this edition, flautist Leona Rötzsch arranged the viola da gamba fantasias for solo flute, thereby complementing Telemann?s flute fantasias with another set of twelve.
