Treble Clef Version-Richard Reed Parry's Duet For Heart And Breath Treble Clef version for Viola (or other instrument of suitable range) and Piano (or other polyphonic instrument).The performers wear stethoscopespositioned over their hearts so that each can follow his or her own heart rate. Two eighth notes (quavers) correspond to the two sounds of a normal heartbeat and performers should match as closely as possible the staccato andirregular rhythm they hear. When instructed to ?play to breath? the natural cycle of one inhalation and one exhalation or vice versa will determine the length of the bar (two quarter notes/crotchets) without any attempt to makeit metronomic.'This piece is based around the idea of using the widely varying internal rhythms of the performers? bodies as performance parameters. There is no actual tempo or meter built into the piece. The breathingrates of the players are used in alternation with the individual performers? heart rates to determine the pace at which all of the musical material is played. This requires that the performers generally play quietly anddelicately with little or no vibrato so as to be able to hear their heartbeats adequately. This in combination with thenatural variance between the different heart rates results in a kind of delicate musical ?pointillism?:starts and stops which are somewhat staggered parts which repeatedly line up and fall out of synch with each other different individuals? pulses rising and falling. The famous opera by George and Ira Gershwin from the novel 'Porgy' by DuBose Heyward. George and Ira Gershwin joined DuBose Heyward in Charleston to write the opera which had been germinating in George's imagination for several years. Porgy and Bess was George Gershwin's longest and most ambitious creation but it was not truly successful during his lifetime. Some of the songs had achieved popularity before Gershwin's death in 1937 but the work earned real approval and favor only after the 1940 Theater Guild presentation of a slightly revised version. For years it was performed more frequently in Europe where it was considered a true American opera. Arranged for viola andpiano by Alan Arnold.

Garth Knox is one of the most prominent violists of his generation, and as former long-time member of the Arditti Quartet he has developed and maintained a fondness of contemporary music. Three Songs To Sonnets By Shakespeare-Ed Hughes' Against That Time - Three Songs To Sonnets By Shakespeare for Mezzo Soprano Viola and Piano.'Against That Time...Against My Love is a song cycle comprising of three related settings of Shakespeare sonnets(numbers 49 63 and 126). The sonnets are drawn from a collection of 154 of William Shakespeare's poems on love beauty and mortality first published together in 1609.The three sonnets chosen for this sequence meditate particularly on the effect of time upon the appearance of the beloved.In setting these extraordinary lines I let their rhythms permeate the melodic writing for the singer. Theviola and piano act as a kind of echo chamber for the poet's very direct and intimate thoughts. The poems seem both timeless and modern in attitude and perceptions; the music's harmonies though often tonally clear are occasionally fractured and in tension like the many images in thesepoignant texts.' - Ed Hughes
