Tribute to a Maestro is an homage to Jean-Philippe Rameau (1683 1764), one of the most important French Baroque composers. Rameau was a hugely significant composer, organist, harpsichordist and music teacher: he also published several authoritative books on music theory. Jan de Haan based this tribute on a theme from ‘Les Sauvages’ (The Savages), the fourth act of Rameau’s ballet-opera, Les Indes Galantes (The Amorous Indies). The work begins with two variations, whereupon the striking theme can be heard. After a short intermezzo, four more variations follow, of which the last one is composed in Baroque style. This series of easy piano music for teaching purposes presents pupils in the lower and lower middle grades with a carefully chosen selection of well-known and lesser-known compositions by important masters. The volumes are deliberately kept small in extant, since it is more stimulating for children to change the teaching material frequently. Jean-Philippe Rameau (1683-1764) is the second great keyboard master of the Baroque Age next to Couperin. His works are as unknown to pianists, with few exceptions, as they are famous among harpsichord players. The virtuosity and imaginativeness of his works lend themselves especially well to the sound of harpsichord, which is why the piano interpretation of works by Couperin, Rameau, Scarlatti and other composers of that time has been categorically rejected. But, after all, the works of Bach and Handel were written for the harpsichord and clavichord, and no one would dare question their interpretation on the pianoforte. In order to introduce these Impressionists of the Baroque Era to piano instructions, the editor has added to this series a folio of both Couperin's (EB 8029) and Rameau's music. The selection of the pieces is based on two criteria: 1. relatively modest demands made on technique, 2. various musical forms of expression. Baroque dance forms and graceful character pieces (LaJoyeuse, L'Indifferente) are typical ofRameau's work. Simplifications to a small extent of the harpsichord setting and also of the omamentation in the original version were required, based on the teaching experience of the editor. The indications for phrasing and articulation are those of the editor. The Minuet on page 6 has been precisely elaborated on in this respect to serve as a model, whereas the remaining pieces contain only suggestions. As in other folios of this series: what is here to be stressed, is the importance of working out independently the phrasing and the dynamics. Directions for this are given by the espective footnotes; these directions, however, are not obligatory. Indications pertaining to dynamics and tempo have been omitted completely; the clearly recognizable character of the individual pieces should be direction enough. The tonal possibilities of the piano should in any case by used subtly. The very precise fingerings have been adapted to the suggested phrasings and to the corresponding realisation of trills (according to the table). Heinz Walter, Salzburg, Spring 1980.

Les Paladinswas Rameau's last work premiered at the Academie royale de musique in 1760. Sharply criticized on account of its overtly comical libretto, the work was withdrawn after fifteen performances and was thus one of the most stinging failures in the composer's career. Seen from today's perspective, the public reception is hardly comprehensible for such an inventive work. Radically rejuvenating his writing, Rameau displays a youthful, playful personality, miles away from the critics reproaching him for being nothing but an old man in his dotage. One ban barely imagine such a work coming from the pen of a septuagenarian!Rameau did not prepare the work for publication, and theOEuvres completesunder Camille Saint-Saens's general editorship did not include the work in the collection issued by Durand. The present volume ofOpera omnia Rameauis thus the first edition of Les Paladins.

This edition presents a further dramatic jewel for the stage by Jean-Philippe Rameau. It comes with a vocal score for study and rehearsals as well as with a compilation of the purely instrumental parts for performance as a suite in the concert hall. In view of the wealth of the work's musical treasures and the stylistic innovations - similar to theBoreades- the rather frosty reception of the premiere series in the spring of 1760 seems completely incomprehensible to us today. It led to this Comedie ballet not being performed until well into the 20th century. The story that the ballet tells is based on a fable by La Fontaine,Le Petit chien qui secoue de l'argent et des pierreries(i.e.The little dog who shakes silver and stones). In medieval Veneto, the guardian Anselme undermines the love affairs of his ward Argies. Scenes of tragic expression are contrasted with folk-comic ones; and last but not least, the sexually ambiguous fairy Manto may have caused difficulties for the bold work at the Paris Opera. The critical new edition published as part of theOpera omnia Rameauseries offers the final version, supplemented in the appendix by the variants of the original version. SinceLes Paladinsremained unpublished during Rameau's lifetime and was also not included in theOEuvres completes, this is the first edition of the work. It satisfies both scholarly demand and the practical needs of musicians.

The three grands motets, Quam dilecta, In convertendo and Deus noster refugium, which Jean-Philippe Rameau composed from 1713 to 1715 are still relatively unknown today. Being performed in a concert spirituel in 1751, In Convertendo was poorly received; this failure long continued to pursue Rameau. Yet these masterworks are testimony to Rameau's great contrapuntal mastery and contain beautiful lyrical passages. Quam dilecta and Deus noster refugium have survived only in later sources which originated in about 1770, after Rameau's death, and the works have been rendered in a scoring which does not correspond to his intentions. The present new edition attempts for the first time to reconstruct them as closely as possible to their original form. The edition of In convertendo is based on Rameau's autograph score from 1751. Score available separately - see item CA.2100800.
