The Bohemian composer Jan Dismas Zelenka was a double bass player and church music composer at the Saxon court of the Elector August the Strong and his son Friedrich August II. In the years after 1721 he composed an extensive repertoire of Catholic church music together with the Kapellmeister Johann David Heinichen. These works, together with the Dresden operas composed by Johann Adolf Hasse in quick succession from 1731 onwards, established the reputation of the Saxon court as one of the most important musical centers of the late Baroque period. Zelenka composed this psalm setting De profundis in D minor ZWV 97 in 1724 on the death of his father, including a concluding Requiem verse. This was later replaced by the lesser doxology so that the work can be performed in the office of Christmas week. Both endings are included in this new edition. Three trombones, used as an independent instrumental group, give the work a special tonal color. Score available separately - see item CA.4006400.

The “De Profundis†text includes excerpts from the Psalms that amount to a call to God to hear our prayers and be merciful. This setting is captivating and distinctively original. The rhythmic playfulness includes mixed meters and ostinato patterns that hint at the composer's Latin roots. Hand claps from the choir accentuate the presentation. The tenor solo is reminiscent of a cantor's cry and pushes the harmonies into phrases of subtle bitonality. When the percussion enters the piece is on a nonstop track to a climactic finish. All in all the work is stunning! An excellent concert choice for college and professional choirs.

This set of three motets for unaccompanied male choir sets the Latin words for the De Profundis, Ave Maria and Laudate and manifests Lewkovitch's fascination both with chant and with modality.Contemporary Danish composer, conductor and Organist Bernhard Lewkovitch has followed a rare path among modern composers. From 1947 he was Organist at St Ansgars Kirches and later remained connected with the Catholic Church by working as an Organist. Clearly he is inspired by the Catholic liturgy and sees his great output of ecclesiastical music as a vocation and a great responsibility. For many years his work by inspired by Gregorian chant and was composed in church modes, then inthe mid 1950's he began to expand into modern bitonality and polytonality, culminating in Il cantico delle creature in 1962/3 in which there was no conventional notation and no fixed pitch. After that, Lewkovitch had somewhat of a hiatus, later returning again to the inspirations of the mid1950's.

For SSATB and organ This anthem commemorates the First World War. It sets a stark English text by Dr Joseph Spence which conveys the relentless hardship of life in the Trenches, alongside Latin words from Psalm 130, providing a striking contrast in their constancy and otherworldliness.
