As with many cantatas by Homilius Kommt, frohe Volker, herzu, for the 4th Sunday after Epiphany, is notable for its unusual formal structure, with two choral movements in a cantata of only three movements. The generally festive, thankful character of the work, without references to the Gospel for a particular Sunday, makes this cantata, characterized by its singable melodies, a work which can be used on many Sundays throughout the church year. Dixit Dominus (Ps 109), a psalm setting for double choir, is one of Vivaldi's most significant sacred works. In it, he takes up the old Venetian polychoral tradition, combining its compositional techniques with those of the instrumental concerto, the cantata and the opera. The broadly conceived cycle of movements, consisting of eight psalm verses and the doxology, is characterized by an expansive arch of tonalities connecting the two framing outer movements in D major (these are also thematically related): Dixit Dominus and Gloria Patri. The contrasting and varied inner movements are perfect examples of Vivaldi's skill in vividly portraying linguistic figures in music. Score and part available separately - see item CA.4000700.

When Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart returned to Salzburg in January 1779 from his journey to Paris, his luggage contained a single church music work - an unfinished Kyrie in E flat major (KV 296a) together with sketches for the Sanctus and Benedictus (KV 296c). In 2015, at the suggestion of the late Armin Kircher, Johann Simon Kreuzpointner set about compiling a five-movement setting of the mass from this material, also drawing on an unfinished cantata in E flat major (KV 429). For the orchestration and text underlay, Kreuzpointner took his cue from Mozart's church music works. With this edition Kreuzpointner, an experienced church musician and composer, created a convincing and stylistically assured work, which he tried out in several performances. The result is a concise setting of the mass, good to sing, which does not present any great difficulties for soloists, chorus, or orchestra. The title Missa brevissima does not come from Mozart, but was chosen because of the brevity of the mass setting with its missing Credo. It also underlines the special status of this setting of the mass. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.5180100.

He was without argument our greatest church composer, wrote the lexicographer E. L. Gerber a few years after Homilius's death in 1785. As a result of the destruction of the Kreuzkirche during the Seven Years War, the longtime Kreuzkantor, a pupil of Bach, performed his professional musical duties primarily at the Frauenkirche in Dresden. The Passionskantate was well received and widely disseminated during the 18th and 19th centuries: Thanks to its popularity it was published in 1775 by Breitkopf as a full score - a rare honor, accorded to only one other Passion in the 18th century (Graun's Tod Jesu). The text describes the events of the Passion from a very personal point of view: The story focuses less on the actual events, then upon the feelings of the observers of these events. The subjective nature of the narrative is reflected in a very dramatically marked style of recitative, which presents a charming contrast to the expressive choral writing and the melodically accented arias. With the release of a new music editions and a SACD/CD the Passionskantate can now be rediscovered.. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3710400.

Psalm texts inspired Mendelssohn throughout his composing career. In 1837 Robert Schumann judged Mendelssohn's setting of Psalm 42 as the highest level that he has achieved as a composer of church music, indeed the highest level that modern church music has ever reached. With this arrangement of Mendelssohn's cantata Wie der Hirsch schreit (As the hart longs) smaller choirs and choirs with more limited resources of space or finance can now perform this popular work. The original symphonic wind and brass forces have been reduced from 15 to 5 wind and brass forces. All the vocal parts (soloists and chorus) are identical with the original version, so that the vocal scores and chorus scores of that version can be used. Can be performed by smaller choirs with smaller instrumental forces Usable with the vocal scores and choral scores from the original version. Complete performance material available on loan. carus plus: the work is also available in carus music, the choir app, and the practice CD series Carus Choir Coach. The Gloria, composed in early 1822 at the age of 13, is Mendelssohn's first creative venture in the field of church music on a larger scale. It is a direct result of his composition studies under the director of the Berlin Singakademie Carl Friedrich Zelter, but was no longer wholly a student work because the young composer hoped that Zelter would provide him with an opportunity to perform this work with the Singakademie. The enthusiasm for Handel and Bach which was sustained by the performances at the Singakademie influenced Mendelssohn's early creative style. In the Gloria Mendelssohn sought to emulate the model of the large-scale baroque cantata. The concluding fugue, the mysterious Qui tollis and lyrical solos ensembles in the place of solo arias give testimony to Mendelssohn's great talent and willingness to experiment. Score and part available separately - see item CA.4048300.
