Dixit Dominus (Ps 109), a psalm setting for double choir, is one of Vivaldi's most significant sacred works. In it, he takes up the old Venetian polychoral tradition, combining its compositional techniques with those of the instrumental concerto, the cantata and the opera. The broadly conceived cycle of movements, consisting of eight psalm verses and the doxology, is characterized by an expansive arch of tonalities connecting the two framing outer movements in D major (these are also thematically related): Dixit Dominus and Gloria Patri. The contrasting and varied inner movements are perfect examples of Vivaldi's skill in vividly portraying linguistic figures in music. Score and part available separately - see item CA.4000700.

Psalm texts inspired Mendelssohn throughout his composing career. In 1837 Robert Schumann judged Mendelssohn's setting of Psalm 42 as the highest level that he has achieved as a composer of church music, indeed the highest level that modern church music has ever reached. With this arrangement of Mendelssohn's cantata Wie der Hirsch schreit (As the hart longs) smaller choirs and choirs with more limited resources of space or finance can now perform this popular work. The original symphonic wind and brass forces have been reduced from 15 to 5 wind and brass forces. All the vocal parts (soloists and chorus) are identical with the original version, so that the vocal scores and chorus scores of that version can be used. Can be performed by smaller choirs with smaller instrumental forces Usable with the vocal scores and choral scores from the original version. Complete performance material available on loan. carus plus: the work is also available in carus music, the choir app, and the practice CD series Carus Choir Coach. The Gloria, composed in early 1822 at the age of 13, is Mendelssohn's first creative venture in the field of church music on a larger scale. It is a direct result of his composition studies under the director of the Berlin Singakademie Carl Friedrich Zelter, but was no longer wholly a student work because the young composer hoped that Zelter would provide him with an opportunity to perform this work with the Singakademie. The enthusiasm for Handel and Bach which was sustained by the performances at the Singakademie influenced Mendelssohn's early creative style. In the Gloria Mendelssohn sought to emulate the model of the large-scale baroque cantata. The concluding fugue, the mysterious Qui tollis and lyrical solos ensembles in the place of solo arias give testimony to Mendelssohn's great talent and willingness to experiment. Clayton White composed a four-movement cantata on Psalm 100 (inspired by the soundtracks of biblical epics from his childhood). This anthem is a reduction of the cantata’s movements, which are described in the notes in the octavo. The sections are contrasting, finally building to a climax and ending with a joyful noise to fill the sanctuary!

This piece, with words by Langston Hughes, is from Margaret Bonds’ cantata Simon Bore the Cross. The cantata pulls into sharp focus individuals of African descent who were integral components of the gospel story: King Balthazar and Simon of Cyrene. A moving piece for Good Friday.
