The Serenade in E-flat, K.375, exists in two versions, one for two clarinets, two horns and two bassoons, and another for the same forces plus two oboes, forming an octet. From Mozart himself we know a fair amount about the occasion that led to the first, six-instrument version of this work and about its early performances. Written for the sister-in-law of the court painter Hickl, it probably originated toward the end of September or the beginning of October in 1781 and was first performed on 15 October, the name-day of St. Theresa. The octet version probably arose in the summer of the following year. It is far more than a mechanical expansion of the sextet with the oboes merely reinforcing the clarinets colla parte. Not only did Mozart take advantage of the occasion to make changes in the articulation and the dynamics, he also altered the work’s melodic substance and formal design. The two additional high-register instruments allowed him to achieve more subtle distinctions and gradations of timbre, thereby enabling him, for example, to vary the timbral homogeneity of the two clarinets. The opportunity arose to divide melodic phrases among the clarinets and oboes or to make them more brilliant and incisive by doubling them at the unison or octave.

Cherubini's Marche funebre is in the tradition of the funeral music of the French Revolution. The work was composed in 1820 on the occasion of the solemn funeral services for Charles Ferdinand of Bourbon, the Duke of Berry, who was the victim of an assassination when leaving the Paris Opera. In the piece the regular, penetrating beat of the tam tams and the drum roll which follows, the dark-sounding colors and the painful dissonances leave their mark on the funeral march, which suggests that for a performance this work could be combined with either of Cherubini's settings of the Requiem text. Andalag # 11- Duo for Alto Flute and Bassoon. Part of Andalag - Suite in 11 movements. Programme note: Some years ago I was asked by the Faroese ensemble Aldubaran to compose duets for the woodwinds within the ensemble. The idea then came to me to write a Suite with the name Andalag in 11 movements. 8 movements are duets and are approximately 4 min. long. 2 movements are quartets and are approximately 8 min. long, and 1 movement is an octet which is approximately 16 min. long. In other words, the Suite will last approximately 60 min. The (octet) instrumentation is 2 flutes, 2 clarinets, 2 horns and 2 bassoons. The Faroese word andalag has a multilayerd meaning. The first half of the word is anda and means to breath or spirit, and the second half of the word lag means melodi, mood or layer. I use two small ideas in this Suite. One idea is in a sort of major mood and the other in a sort of minor mood. Sunleif Rasmussen, May 2013.

The two volumes contain 69 works and movements altogether, in chronological order: in Volume 1, from the Renaissance to Beethoven, and in Volume 2 from Weber up to the present day. Most of them are transcriptions of instrumental or choral works, the easiest ones can be played after just a few months of clarinet study. The supplementary parts supplied enable the clarinet (or bass clarinet) in the two outer parts to be replaced by a non-transposing instrument: flute, oboe or violin, and bassoon or cello.
