Giuseppe Maria Cambini, né à Livourne probablement en 1746, n'a pas seulement écrit des opéras et des symphonies, mais aussi plus de 100 quintettes à cordes pour deux violons, alto et deux violoncelles. Ses oeuvres se caractérisent par une mélodie douce et fluide inspiré par le son des cordes. Les solos virtuoses qui sont assez communs dans quintettes de concert recul en faveur de passages cantabile. Long before writing Passalega, I harboured the idea of creating some form of organically homogeneous chain of musical tensions evolving ever more distinctly into a musical utterance, although still indeterminate in terms of pitch. The tissues forming the chain of those tensions were of relatively simple design, yet in spite of this ? or perhaps because of it ? they were incredibly well suited to generating the expressive narrative that accompanied me throughout that entire pre-composition period. After recognising the character of the musical potential in that material, I considered it to be similar to Baroque rhetoric in terms of the refined clarity and smoothness of the gestures. The third in the series of ten Quartets commissioned by the Naxos recording company. First performed at Wigmore Hall London in Oct 2003 by the Maggini Quartet. A convenient miniature-sized version of the score intended forstudy.

Par MUSTONEN OLLI. The first movement of my Piano Quintet is filled with drama and passion. Its atmosphere can be related to my Second Symphony Johannes Angelos. The second movement is a set of polyphonic variations in a form reminiscent of a passacaglia. The music seems to be hypnotized by a theme consisting of a chromatic cluster of ten notes. In the beginning of the last movement, materials from the previous movements start to reappear, but this time in a mysterious, incoherent way. The strings find new music resembling a fragmented hymn.
