Richard Strauss (1864–1949), the composer of large-scale operas and tone poems, also wrote lieder throughout his life. His entire oeuvre stretching over a period of 78 years is framed by lied compositions: the Weihnachtslied dating from December 1870 (the secondentry in the chronological catalogue of Strauss's works) and the lied Malven written in November 1948 (Strauss’s last completed composition). His lied compositions include lieder with piano accompaniment, genuine orchestral lieder and subsequent orchestrationsof original lieder with piano. Strauss frequently conducted his own operas and orchestral works and also gave public performances ofhis lieder both as pianist and conductor. As was customary in the concert practice of the time, he combined lieder with larger-scaleworks: it was not uncommon for tone poems and lieder to appear on the same programme. Music publishing houses were active in the dissemination of Strauss lieder across the world: in the first prints, the early lieder were published in their original register, mostly only with German texts, but numerous editions were subsequently issued for other vocal registers or with additional texts in English, later also in French, Italian and Russian translations. The broad spectrum was rounded off by arrangements of lieder (such as purely instrumental piano arrangements by Max Reger and Walter Gieseking), arrangements and orchestrations by other composers andlieder albums containing collections of Strauss lieder not ordered chronologically according to their opus numbers. The fact that Strauss is to this day one of the most frequently performed composers is not only due to his operas and tone poems, but also his lieder, particularly the most treasured favourites. A number of these pieces are contained in this volume: Zueignung op. 10 No. 1,Nichts op. 10 No. 2, Die Nacht op. 10 No. 3, Allerseelen op. 10 No. 8, Ständchen op. 17 No. 2, Ruhe, meine Seele! op. 27 No. 1, Cäcilie op. 27 No. 2, Heimliche Aufforderung op. 27 No. 3, Morgen! op. 27 No. 4 and Traum durch die Dämmerung op. 29 No. 1.

In 1918 a twelve-year phase came to an end during which Richard Strauss had completely turned his back on the composition of lieder.Plausible explanations for this period of abstinence range from Strauss’s focus on stage works during this time to the fact that hiswife Pauline, who had previously constituted the composer's “ideal performer†of his lieder and frequently been the source of inspiration for these compositions, had ended her career as a singer. After not having produced any new lieder during these twelve years, Strauss was equally consistent in the resumption of lied composition – at least in the year 1918 that would prove to be the most intensive “lieder year†in his entire compositional career with the composition of opp. 66, 67, 68 and 69 (a grand total of 29 lieder, in addition to the orchestration of six piano lieder composed in former years). The current volume includes the lieder dating from 1918 up to Strauss's death in 1949 in their original language and pitch. German and English.

Fingering Michael Korstick; fingering & bowing for cello Johannes Moser Aside from the Piano Quartet op. 13 and the Violin Sonata op. 18, the Cello Sonata numbers among the most mature works of chamber music from Strauss' early oeuvre. The influences of Mendelssohn, Schumann, and Brahms are noticeable, while leaving sufficient space for a very personal tonal language, often with surprising rhythmic and harmonic turns of phrase. Strauss subjected the first version completed in early 1881 to a radical revision over the winter of 1882/83; the opening movement was thoroughly reworked, the two subsequent movements rewritten completely. It was worth it, because after the premiere in Dresden, the composer wrote to his mother, “My sonata garnered extraordinary acclaim, the applause was enormous, congratulations came to me from all sides.â€.

Farewell Tod und Verklarung marks a turning point in Richard Strauss's corpus of tone poems: Even before the November 1889 premiere of his previous work Don Juan, Strauss had finished his third work in this genre. He leads the listener with great clarity through the dying hour of a person who had pursued the highest ideals. The present Urtext edition evaluates for the first time all the corrections that Strauss made in the galley proofs of the work's full score and parts, correlating these to the music text. The preface provides insight into the genesis and reception history, while the detailed Critical Report systematically documents all of the editorial decisions.

Richard Strauss was aware (especially following the success of his Don Juan) of his reputation and above all of his value as a composer, which led him to rewrite several of his successful works by hand and leave them to his descendants as valuable Christmas gifts. In the case of the Eulenspiegel score, however, it was a genuine revision, which he marked with the instruction: [...] with the second fair copy October 1944 | once again revised and | to be regarded as a new print (especially in the complete edition of my works). | Dr. Richard Strauss. Hundreds of more precisely defined indications for articulation, dynamics and tempo, but especially an altered scoring at the end of the work (waiver of additional horns and trumpets) present the Till Eulenspiegel in this Urtext edition for the first time in the version bequeathed by Strauss as the final version. The dedicatee of the work changed as well. Whereas the first edition was dedicated to the dear friend Dr. Arthur Seidl, Strauss dedicated his revision to the good Till on his 50th birthday.

Strauss third tone poem Don Juan was composed in spring 1888. This work is already an impressive demonstration of the composer's newly acquired confidence in mastering the orchestral apparatus. Already completed in the fall, it took over a year until its premiere in Weimar on November 11, 1889. Breitkopf & Hartel's new Urtext edition assesses not only the autograph and the first edition, but also for the first time the parts used under the composer's direction, resulting in some surprisingly new readings. An extensive preface, facsimile pages, and a detailed critical report round off this authoritative Urtext edition.First Urtext edition since the first edition. Evaluation of all available sources, including some orchestral parts used by Strauss. A detailed critical report. Complete orchestral material available for purchase.

Christian Sinding (1856-1941) gained worldwide fame with his piano piece 'Fruhlingsrauschen', which is likely to be his most famous work still today. The '5 Klavierstucke' Op. 97, created in 1909, are bravura pieces the late Romantic harmony of which is sometimes reminiscent of Richard Strauss. The effective brilliant piano setting is characterised by a widely elaborated melody and can be easily mastered by the advanced player.Large arpeggios characterise the first piece 'Des Morgens'. 'Auf dem Wasser' is an evocative tone painting in swaying 12/8 time with powerful unison passages in the middle section. 'Intermezzo' appears capricious, with dance-like figures. 'Gewitter' is a brilliant concert study in the style of Liszt. The work concludes with the piece 'Aquarell', a poetic salon piece revelling in harmonies, notated as a clear piano setting.

Richard Strauss (1864-1949) wrote his VIOLIN CONCERTO IN D MINOR, Op. 8, between 1881 and 1882, and it remained his only foray in that genre. Composed while a teenager and still in school. While still very much a product of the Romantic era tradition, the work is not considered as distinctive as the works he would produce only a few years later, and Strauss himself later ridiculed the work. Still, with inventive and bold writing in the solo and hints of his mature harmonic style to come, there is much to enjoy in the work, including its warmth, youthful sincerity, and lyrical expression, so that it should not be dismissed as mere juvenilia, either by contemporary audiences or Strauss himself. The chamber version of the concerto was first performed in Vienna on December 5, 1882, with the dedicatee Benno Walter on the violin while Strauss played his own piano reduction. The premiere for the orchestral version would take place seven years later in Cologne on March 4, 1890, with Walter again performing the solo with an orchestra conducted by Franz Wüllner. Instrumentation: 2.2.2.2: 4.2.0.0: Timp: Str (9-8-7-6-5 in set): Solo Violin.
