Edition du Dr Lawrence Golan des chefs-d'oeuvre de Bach pour violon solo combine l'authenticité et l'exactitude d'une édition savante de Urtext avec la valeur concrète et l'obligeance d'une édition d'exécution. Un fac-similé du manuscrit autographe de Bach a été utilisé dans la préparation de cette édition et les intentions du compositeur ont été conservées jusqu'au dernier détail. Without any doubt J.S. Bach?s cycle of the three Sonatas and Partitas BWV 1001-1006 represents one of the pinnacles of classical European music. According to C.P.E. Bach a contemporary voice stated that there was ?nothing more accomplished in order to become a good violinist? than his father?s works. The cycle reflects the entire harmonic and polyphonic musical universe of Bach?s time, so masterfully composed that it can be rendered within the limited framework of but a single instrument the violin.
The new publication of the Sonatas and Partitas BWV 1001-1006 (BA 5256) constitutes a complete revision of our older edition (BA 5116). The musical text has been edited by Peter Wollny and represents the most up-to-date state of research as published in the New Bach Edition Revised (NBArev), volume BA 5937-01. The edition is mainly based on Bach?s unusually clear autograph which is considered among the most beautiful manuscripts by the composer. All relevant secondary sources have been taken into consideration in order to clarify ambiguities. These include five contemporary copies, including one by Anna Magdalena Bach, and four manuscripts from the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
The musical text has been newly engraved with a clear and generous layout, whereby page turns and pagination have been retained from the previous edition. This allows the straightforward navigation between a copy of the previous and this new edition. The detailed Preface (Ger/Eng) provides information on the genesis of the Sonatas and Partitas, their context and the sources.

Johann Sebastian Bach sonates et Partitas pour violon Solo sont parmi les plus célèbres chefs-d'oeuvre de leur genre. Wiener Urtext édition utilise la copie du copiste un début de Köthen comme source secondaire qui n'a pas été évaluée très fortement comme source jusqu'à maintenant. Malgré sa proximité avec l'autographe existante, on ne peut écarter la possibilité que cette copie pourrait remonter à un autre manuscrit original de Bach. For this transcription the author used a photographic copy of the autograph manuscript of Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin (BWV 1001-1006) by Johann Sebastian Bach, dated 1720 and kept in the Staatbibliothek Preussicher Kulturbesits, Berlin. The adjustments to the original text mainly concern: harmonic enrichments suggested by the implicit polyphony, which is typical of the works for string instruments by Bach, necessary corrections to remedy simple misprints, a clearer and more complete polyphony. For this reason, when two or more voices moves homorhythmically, the related pauses are grouped to avoid graphic overload, according to the current practice./ Recueil / Guitare

Les six solos pour violon de Bach ont été conservés sous la forme d?une copie au propre particulièrement belle du compositeur. Ces ?uvres sont considérées comme des étapes marquantes du répertoire aussi bien du point de vue purement musical que de la technique instrumentale ? caractéristiques qu?elles partagent avec les six suites pour violoncelle.
