Bach'. The words were by Lamartine – 'Vers sur un album' from his Recueillments poétiques of 1839. Exactly when these words were supplanted by those of the 'Ave Maria' is not clear, but it seems to have happened within the first few years of the song's life. After a century and a half the piece isstill sung, played and loved the world over, and this is surely its own guarantee of musical value, as it is of its composer's more general gift as a songwriter. Along with Piano music song is Reynaldo Hahn's (1874-1947) preferred genre: with his light Baritone voice the young prodigy conquered Parisian salons by singing the works of his favourite composers (Gounod Massenet Fauré) not to mention his own compositions which enchanted audiences. Though finely wrought these songs have a naturalness which continues to please as evidenced by the success of the first two volumes. For many this third volume will be a revelation since it assembles for the first time songs that were published separately in magazines. It also includes the Love without wings cycle (1904 based on melancholy poems by Mary Robinson) andthe series of songs performed by Yvonne Printemps in the film La Dame aux Camélias (1934) which were on everyone's lips at the time.
