Schumann begann erst recht spat, sich mit Kammermusik zu beschaftigen. 1842 entstanden dann gleich sechs gewichtige Werke, darunter auch sein erstes Klaviertrio, das er aber erst 1850 unter dem Titel Vier Phantasiestuecke als op. 88 herausgab. In der Zwischenzeit hatte er bereits die Trios d-moll op. 63 (1847) und F-dur op. 80 (1847/49) komponiert. In seiner Duesseldorfer Zeit, 1851, kam dann noch das g-moll-Trio op. 110 hinzu. Zusammen mit den Trios von Mendelssohn und Brahms zahlen die vier Kompositionen Schumanns zu den wichtigsten Werken der Gattung im 19. Jahrhundert. En 1842 virent alors simultanément le jour six pièces de même importance, parmi lesquelles également son premier Trio avec piano, qu?il fit publier en 1850 seulement sous le titre Vier Phantasiestücke, lui attribuant le numéro d?opus 88.

Entre-temps, il avait déjà composé le Trio en ré mineur op. 63 (1847) et celui en Fa majeur op. 80 (1847/1849). En 1851, alors qu?il vivait à Düsseldorf, il composa encore le Trio en sol mineur op. 110.

Upon hearing the first trio Robert Schumann declared Mendelssohn is the Mozart of the nineteenth century! Written in the composer's famously flowing Romantic style these two works are staples of the repertoire and anchors of many chamber music series. Both appear here for the first time in a single and affordable study edition. Mendelssohn drew upon a variety of influences in his musical style - chiefly Bach Mozart and Beethoven. Like the other German composers of his generation Mendelssohn created works that mirror the era'stension between Classicism and Romanticism. These trios are universally regarded as among his finest works with marked contrasts ranging from slow movements to lively scherzos in the manner of his Songs Without Words.
