Piano Trios

Mozart’s Piano Trios have been available in an established Henle edition in parts for many years. They have now been extensively revised by the editor and include the latest musicological findings. Inparticular the autograph scores from the Library of the Jagiellonian University of Cracow which were not accessible for many years form the basis of this revision with its extensive commentary. On the occasion of this newedition Henle is proud to present a study edition of the Piano Trios for the first time.

Composés tous les deux en 1827 c?est-à-dire un an avant sa mort ce sont des ?uvres caractéristiques de sa maturité riches d?une grande invention mélodique alliée à une forte puissance créatrice formelle et une profonde expressivité. Si le trio en Mi bé-mol majeur op. 100 D 929 fut vendu à l?éditeur de Leipzig Probst (il ne parut cependant que juste après la mort de Schubert) le trio en Si bémol majeur op. 99 D 898 ne fut pas imprimé du vivant du compositeur. L?adagio en Mi bémol majeur op. post. 148 D 897 reproduit en annexe et connu plus tard sous letitre de Notturno fut conçu à l?origine comme mouvement lent du trio en Si bémol majeur. Schubert pourrait l?avoir considéré comme impropre à la publication du fait de son caractère sombre et expressif jusqu?au désespoir. Il ne parut d?ailleurs qu?en 1846. En annexe de ce recueil figure également le premier essai dans le genre du trio composé par Schubert à l?été 1812 alors qu?il était âgé de 15 ans.

In his preface to 'Piano Trios on Stage”, the arranger, David Brooker, reminds us that, just as the string quartet, the piano trio has always been one of the pillars of chamber music. In the 19th and early 20th century, it was almost like the later invention of the gramophone record, allowing larger works, in arrangement, as well as lighter pieces to be presented to small audiences, often as background music. David comments that string players have plenty of easy material to introduce them to the pleasure of making music with other instrumentalists but when it comes to piano parts these are usually written or arranged with a teacher or more advanced student in mind. David sets out to rectify that imbalance and his arrangements aim to put all three players on an equal footing. Of easy to intermediate standard, they are ideal for violinists, cellists and pianists who are now ready to try their hand at proper chamber music. Fantasy Pieces op. 88 for Piano Trio. The Fantasy Pieces op. 88 are Schumann?s first contribution to the genre of the piano trio and date from his very prolific ?chamber music year? 1842. However, Schumann needed an unusually long time to give the work its final form: the Fantasy Pieces were released only in the autumn of 1850 after several revisions. The brevity and the modest technical demands of the four charming character pieces make them an ideal entry into the world of Schumann?s chamber music also for non-professional musicians. The Fantasy Pieces, taken from the volume Schumann · Piano Trios HN 916, are now available from Henle for the first time also as a practical single edition.
