Born in Havana Cuba in 1895 Ernesto Lecuona is arguably Cuba's greatest serious composer. He was a gifted pianist who wrote hundreds of songs and piano works before he died in 1963. Most of his music is composed in a rich authentic Cuban style. The most famous of his works is Malagueña the sixth movement of his Suite Andalucia for solo piano which was first published in 1928. Malagueña has been recorded as a popular song (with added lyrics) as a serious piano work (even by Lecuona himself in the 1950's) and also as a jazz standard (Bill Holman's arrangement for the Stan Kenton Orchestra in the early 1960's.) Over the years it has been arranged many times for variousother mediums ranging from symphony orchestra to field arrangements for drum and bugle corps.In 1976 James Barnes arranged Malagueña for the University of Kansas Marching Band. A few years later with permission from the publisher he expanded this original arrangement into a full work for symphonic band called Prelude Fantasy and Fandango on Lecuona's Malagueña. After several performances in the spring of 1978 (most notably at the MENC Convention in Colorado Springs) this work along with over 200 other Barnes manuscripts lay fallow in the KU Band Library. While packing up his office belongings when he retired from The University of Kansas in 2015 Barnes came across this long languishing Prelude Fantasy and Fandango which remained in condensed score. In the fall of 2016 he completely re-composed the opening portion of the work reduced the number of required percussion and disposed of the two harps in his 1978 version. This new setting features evocative thinly scored extended solo passages for clarinet bassoon and flute before the full wind band concludes the work with a powerful dramatic setting of the main themes of Lecuona's masterful Malagueña.

from Symphony No. 1 - The Lord of the Rings. Johan de Meij?s first symphony The Lord of the Rings is based on the trilogy of that name by J.R.R. Tolkien. This book has fascinated many millions of readers since its publication in 1955. The symphony consists of five separate movements, each illustrating a personage or an important episode from the book. This transcription for brass band, arranged by the composer has the following movements: I. GANDALF (The Wizard), IV. JOURNEY IN THE DARK (The Mines of Moria and The Bridge of Khazad-Dûm), V. HOBBITS. The symphony was written in the period between March 1984 and December 1987, and had its première in Brussels on 15th March 1988, performed by the The Royal Band of the Belgian Guides under the baton of Norbert Nozy. In 1989, the symphony The Lord of the Rings was awarded a first prize in the Sudler International Wind Band Composition Competition in Chicago, and a year later, the symphony was awarded a grant by the Dutch Composers Fund. In 2001, the orchestral version was premiered by the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra and recorded by the London Symphony Orchestra.

Acclaimed American composer Wallingford Riegger wrote Dance Rhythms in 1954 originally for orchestra but then adapted it himself for band. Noted for its light-hearted mood and energy it is an impressive study in rhythm andorchestration. This important work for band is available now again.

Score-Patrick J. Burns' Perfect Trip for Orchestra.Perfect Trip derives its title from the horse racing term which refers to the flawless performance of the winning steed. It waswritten for the 20th Anniversary Concert of the Ridgewood Concert Band (New Jersey) at the request of the band's founding director Chris Wilhjelm. The piece itself lasts not much longer than a typical one-mile race and depictsthe events from the observer's perspective: the initial burst of energy at the starting gate and ensuing excitement approaching the first turn the suspense as the race develops along the far stretch and the increasing drama asthe pack rounds the final turn and heads down the stretch for the big finish.

Score-Rossano Galante's The Redwoods for Orchestra.The Redwoods was commissioned in 1998 by the North Tonawanda High School Band under the direction of Norman Alexander.Thiswork inspired by the beauty power and majesty of the Redwood - the most remarkable of trees - begins with a heroic-romantic Trumpet melody accompanied by Woodwind arpeggios punctuated by Brass rhythms. After a transition theopening melody is followed by the rich lush main theme (m.29) which is stated by the Horns and Woodwinds.After the main theme has undergone variations in orchestration a new section follows (m.65) with the upperWoodwinds playing a second delicately stated theme reminiscent of a music box. The new theme is heard just once more (m.73) but played in a heroic manner by the Trumpets and Trombones in juxtaposition of the original 'music box'statement.The main theme recapitulates in a similar heroic manner (m.82) and as each theme returns it is heard with a change of instrumentation and accompaniment. After the final thematic statement a Brass fanfare bringsus to the end of the piece which culminates in a grand climax.

Score-'Sempre Avanti ' whose title translates as 'Ever Forward' was written for the Bloomfield Youth Band and premiered by that ensemble on June 17 2005. 'Sempre Avanti' was the motto of TonyMarcopoto a longtime supporter and fan of the Youth Band and a retired New Jersey Music Educator who taught at Newark's Arts High School for nearly 40 years. Well into his eighties he practiced his Clarinet for an hour each day.Two years before he passed away he suffered a stroke which paralyzed the entire right side of his face. Despite this unfortunate setback Tony never gave up and to everyone's amazement found a way to not only play the Clarinet but to once again resume his normal routine of an hour of practice each day. Tony's 'ever forward' spirit was remarkable and serves as a terrific example for everyone.

Here's a classic work adapted for developing groups that makes an excellent contest or festival piece. Composed in the summer of 1984 Yorkshire Ballad was premiered at the Kansas Bandmasters Association Convention by Claude T. Smith and the Kansan Intercollegiate Band. Since its publication it has become one of the composer'smost popular works and has been arranged for a variety of ensembles. The composer writes “I composed this little piece so that younger players would have the opportunity to play a piece that is more or less in the style of(Grainger's) Irish Tune from County Derry.”
