This 4-movement suite is based on authentic folktunes from the beautiful southern province in France: the Provence. The composer used an harmonic language respecting the popular characteristics, but on the other hand also contains some spicy notes (... just like the wellknown Provençal sauce! ...). The instrumentation is very colourful, paying a lot of attention to the different timbres of both brass and wood winds as well as to the percussion section.Every movement has its own character: Un Ange a fa la crido (= An angel brought the creed / credo) is like a bourrée, Adam e sa Coumpagnou (= Adam and his companion) is an old love song, Lou Fustié (= the carpenter)a fast dance and finally Lis Escoubo (= a whistle tune / popular ballad) is a farandole. In the latter, the old tradition of folk musicians who play a whistle with one hand and a drum with the other hand, is clearly represented during the first presentations of the one and only theme)Although this piece is not too demanding, a well balanced band is necessary to perform it successfully. Thanks to the contrasts and the varying colours, it keeps on holding the attention. Dieses vierteilige Werk basiert auf alten Volksliedern aus der Provençe. Der Komponist verwendet diese Melodien in einer farbig instrumentierten Suite und braucht hierbei eine Klangsprache, die einerseits den volkstümlichen Charakter nichtverleugnet, aber andererseits doch ab und zu eine pikante Note enthält.Die Teile sind: Un ange a fa la crido, Adam e sa coumpagno, Lou Fusti en Lis Escoubo.

Dreaming of love. This is the theme of the folksong on which the composition was based. Its characteristic melody inspired Jacob de Haan to this instrumental romance with a transparent structure consisting of an introduction, the folk-melody, a development of the theme, the folk-melody accompanied by ornamental triplets followed by the final bars. Ein romantisches Volkslied inspirierte Jacob de Haan dazu, German Love Song zu komponieren, eine instrumentale Romanze in der typischen ABA-Form. Die charakteristische Melodie des Volksliedes erklingt in der Sopranstimme, melodisch unterlegt von dem Tenorregister. Teil B entsteht aus diesem melodischen Gegenstück und er entwickelt sich nach einer kurzen Durchführung zu einem fantastischen Höhepunkt. Dann erklingt zum letzten Mal das Hauptthema in seiner ganzen Pracht.

Hello Kentucky is a light-hearted march, written in American style, which makes use of snippets from the traditional folk song My Old Kentucky Home. Klezmer is actually a conglomeration of different musical styles, including sounds of the Balkans as well as oriental influences and ‘gypsy music’. At the end of the last century, klezmer experienced a revival worldwide and is nowextremely popular. For this varied concert band composition, Jan de Haan wrote a series of his own melodies in klezmer style.Klezmer is eigenlijk een mengelmoes van stijlen waarin niet alleen Balkanklanken terug te vinden zijn, maar ook oriëntaalse en zigeunerinvloeden. In de laatste decennia van de vorige eeuw beleefde de klezmermuziek een wereldwijde revival, die voortduurt tot op de dag van vandaag. Voor dit afwisselende werk componeerde Jan de Haan een aantal eigen melodieën in klezmerstijl. Klezmer ist eigentlich ein Sammelsurium verschiedener Musikstile, wozu unter anderem Balkanklänge sowie orientalische Einflüsse und „Zigeunermusik“ zählen. Ende des vergangenen Jahrhunderts erlebte der Klezmer weltweit ein wahres Revivalund ist heute äußerst populär. Für dieses abwechslungsreiche Orchesterwerk komponierte Jan de Haan eine Reihe eigener Melodien im Klezmer-Stil.Le klezmer est la musique instrumentale traditionnelle juive mais on y trouve également les sonorités des Balkans, et des influences orientales et tziganes. Jan de Haan n’a pas emprunté de mélodies klezmer originales pour Klezmeriana,mais a composé dans ce style une série d’airs pour orchestre d’harmonie.
