Full score for Soprano Baritone SATB choir and small Orchestra.This work was commissioned by the English Baroque Choir and their music director Jeremy Jackman who gave the first performance on 16th March 2013 at St. John’s SmithSquare London.'I’ve wanted to write a choral/instrumental piece based on texts from the Psalms for a very long time so this commission from the English Baroque Choir and their music director Jeremy Jackman (to whom the work is dedicated) was a wonderful opportunity to put this idea into practice. I decided to write a kind of latter-day equivalentto the Bach cantatas with two soloists (soprano and baritone). The texts are derived from a variety of Psalm sources: some in Latin some in English a meditation by Savonarola and a Henry Vaughan poem.' - John McCabe

The magnificent interweaving of harmonies and dialogue-like Voices in Handel’s For Unto Us A Child Is Born make it a perfect addition to the festive choral repertoire. German-born British Baroque composer George Frideric Handel originally composed this piece in 1741 for the English-language oratorio Messiah which eventually became one of the best-known and most frequently performed choral works in Western music. As the last song of Scene 3 of Part I of the oratorio which addresses Isaiah's specific prophecy about the virgin birth of a Messiah For Unto Us A Child Is Born tells the news of Christmas thebirth of a son in Isaiah’s words as found in the Scripture (Isaiah 9:6). The delicate familiar theme is introduced by the Sopranos and taken up by their counter-voices the Tenors later the same dialog is given over to the Altos and Basses. The tutti culminates in 'Wonderful' 'Counselor' 'The Mighty God' 'The Everlasting Father' and 'The Prince of Peace'. As an individual piece this song arranged for SATB Voices with Piano accompaniment is perfect for Christian settings especially during the Christmas season.

This title is taken from the compilation French Songs And Choruses For Mixed-Voice Choir (NOV165198) This song declares itself immediately as a variation on the Renaissance and Baroque tradition of the pastoral song with its use of the title 'To Chloris ' (Chloris and Phyllis were the generic names for pastoral shepherdesses and nymphs in Renaissance and Baroque literature) and the ornamentation in the accompaniment the repeated trills and turns also evoke the realm of the Baroque song. However the work is not a mere imitation; it is a modern song one that pays homage to rather than imitates the older models.

Composed by Heinrich Schütz Psalm 150 SWV 38 is taken from “Psalmen Davids Dresden 1619” and is a piece for Double Chorus Double Brass Choir and Organ. This Baroque Dramatic Concertato is one of the first choral compositions by the author which was initially in German. This religious piece features both German and English lyrics and is also titled “Praise ye the Lord”. Heinrich Schütz (1585-1672) was a German composer and Organist often regarded as the greatest composer before J.S. Bach.

Giuseppe Ottavio Pitoni (1657-1743) was an Italian organist and composer and one of the leading figures in the late Baroque era. He wrote an extensive oeuvre of liturgical music with over 200 motets 300 masses and800 Psalm settings. He bridged the gap between the counterpoint-driven styles of Palestrina and Scarlatti and the more homophonic and harmony-driven works of Handel and Vivaldi becoming a master of both styles in his own right.His setting of the Laudate Dominum (Psalm 150) is for unaccompanied SATB chorus. Having been edited by the noted musicologist J. Steele it is a suitable motet for any church service or would make aperfect recital item.
