Six Pieces by Fritz Kreisler Transcribed for Alto Saxophone and Piano. Fritz Kreisler (1875?1962) was celebrated as one of the greatest violinists of all time. His brilliant technique and rich tone produced a characteristic sound that was and remains immediately identifiable. This collection features six pieces that Kreisler composed or transcribed for violin and piano, here transcribed for alto saxophone and piano. Especially well known are the original pieces Liebesleid and Schon Rosmarin, both of which Kreisler attributed to the now-forgotten composer Joseph Lanner. Caprice Viennois and Rondino on a Theme of Beethoven are likewise original pieces from early in Kreisler?s career, which he would regularly feature as concert encores. The Old Refrainand Midnight Bells are transcriptions, the former of a Viennese popular song and the latter of an excerpt from the operetta Der Opernball by Richard Heuberger. In these six transcriptions, the instrument changes, yet the value remains.

Composed in 1949 the Concerto pour saxophone alto et orchestra by Henri Tomasi (1901-1971) was dedicated to Marcel Mule a renowned French Saxophonist. It was written as a Paris Conservatoire Contest piece and was performed by Mule himself in 1949. This publication is the Alto Saxophone and Piano adaptation of the Concerto. Written in two movements it begins with a secretive introduction leading to a cadenza that reminds of the introduction. It follows on the second part with an Allegro which finishes unexpectedly on an intense suite of fast notes to congregate on a strong Largo. Henri Tomasi is the French composer conductor and winner of the Grand Prix de Rome in 1927 He composed a variety of concerti (16) for Trumpet Violin Viola Clarinet Trombone Horn Oboe Flute as well as Ballets Orchestra Ballades and other pieces.

To this day Eugène Bozza (1905-1991) remains one of the most prolific composers for wind instruments despite being a violinist himself. His Parade Des Petits Soldats for Alto Saxophone and Piano is no exception to the composer's success. During his studies at the Paris Conservatoire Bozza won prizes for Violin conducting and composition as well as the Grand Prix de Rome. He then conducted the orchestra of the Opéra-Comique and became Head of the Conservatoire in Valenciennes whilst remaining a prominent composer. Composed in 1964 Bozza's Parade Des PetitsSoldats for Alto Saxophone and Piano is a delightful work for beginner to intermediate saxophonists addressing a variety of features. As music educationalist Paul Griffiths has written of Bozza's compositions 'his works reveal melodic fluency elegance of structure and a consistenly sensitive concern of instrumental capabilities.'

The great Fantaisie Italienne is a piece composed by Eugène Bozza and transcribed for Alto Saxophone and Piano by Marcel Mule. Quite difficult it requires some advanced skills to be executed perfectly. Starting Moderato it opens with a cadenza which includes some Solo Saxophone sections and continues with a short and lyrical melody. It closes on a nice rhythmic section in Allegro. Really nice to play and to listen to  Fantaisie Italienne is amazing to demonstrate your skills and technical abilities during a recital and a concert. Celtic music is in his blood for his ancestors were noted collectors of dance music manuscripts dating back to the 19th century. It makes no great technical demands on the players but Tourish points out that notation of this music is often ?skeletal? hence it is important to gain a knowledge of theindividual traditions in question and naturally he offers plenty of information on performance practice. The collection spans three centuries from the blind bardic harpists of the 18th century to the international performers of the present day.
