La danse macabre est un thème de l'art du Moyen Age, qui réunit morts et vivants en soulignant la vanité des distinctions sociales dont se moquait le destin. Tout au long des XIVe, XVe et XVIe siècles, ce thème est peint sur les murs des églises et des cimetières d'Europe du Nord et fait également l'objet de textes poétiques ainsi que de représentations théâtrales.Danse macabre est conçue comme ces représentations picturales, comportant l'alternance d'un refrain (la mort) et de couplets de caractères et tempos différents (les vivants).
