Soloists, Choir, Orchestra (singing voice, choir, Orchestra) SKU: BA.BA10506-01 Commedia in due atti (comedy in two acts). Composed by Gioachino Rossini. Edited by Patricia B. Brauner. This edition: Edition of selected works, Urtext edition. Linen. Works of Gioachino Rossini, Volume 2. Edition of selected works, Score. Baerenreiter Verlag #BA10506_01. Published by Baerenreiter Verlag (BA.BA10506-01). ISBN 9790006552009. 33 x 26 cm inches. Text Language: Italian. Text: Sterbini, Cesare. Barenreiter's publication of a new volume of theWorks of Gioachino Rossini, in collaboration with the Center for Italian Opera Studies at the University of Chicago, makes available an edition of the operaIl barbiere di Sivigliawhich meets modern demands. The editors have recently identified numerous carelessly edited places in the last critical edition by referring to additional sources. The greatest changes relate to the overture; for the new edition, no fewer than twenty different autograph manuscripts have been consulted. A detailed appendix containing alternative vocal parts, advice on ornamentation and compositions by Rossini significant in the performance history of the opera complete the volume. A 420-page Critical Commentary is published separately. With this, a critical edition is now available to interpreters, enabling them to perform Rossini's ,,Barber of Sevillewith the greatest possible confidence in the accuracy of the musical material. The performance material is available on hire, and a vocal score will be published at the end of 2009. Through 1829 Rossini was an extraordinarily prolific composer of operas, comic, serious, and semiserious, in Italian and French, as well as of a great deal of vocal and instrumental music. He composed sacred music, vocal treatises, cantatas. Then, for many different reasons, he wrote very little music for more than twentyfive years, if we except some songs and the ' Stabat Mater' . Only after he left Italy definitively for Paris in 1855 did he find his voice again. Between 1857 and 1868 a fresh group of masterpieces issued from his pen, the so-called ' Peches de vieillesse' (Sins of Old Age), including chamber music, songs, and the 'Petite Messe Solennelle'. Philip Gossett, General Editor of Works of Gioachino Rossini, is the Robert W. Reneker Distinguished Service Professor at The University of Chicago and a professordi chiara famaat the University of RomeLa Sapienza. He is also general editor of The Works of Giuseppe Verdi. Barenreiter in cooperation with the Center for Italian Opera Studies at The University of Chicago will publish ten volumes in the series Works of Gioachino Rossini, in critical editions, during the period 2007-2011. These are all volumes that were not issued in theEdizione critica delle opere di Gioachino Rossini.

Soloists, Mixed choir, Orchestra SKU: BA.BA10726-01 Oratorio in three parts. Composed by George Frideric Handel. Edited by Michael Pacholke. This edition: Complete edition. Linen. Complete edition, Score. HWV 46. Baerenreiter Verlag #BA10726-01. Published by Baerenreiter Verlag (BA.BA10726-01). ISBN 9790006575596. 33 x 26 cm inches. Text Language: Italian. Preface: Pacholke, Michael. In the brief half-year period from August 14, 1736, to January 27, 1737, Georg Friedrich Handel achieved an unprecedented level of productivity in his opera compositions, creating three operas. Additionally, in March 1737, he also composed a largely new oratorio titled â??Il trionfo del Tempo e della Verità â? (â??The Triumph of Time and Truthâ?) HWV 46b. The libretto of this oratorio closely corresponds to that of the oratorio â??La Bellezza ravveduta nel trionfo del Tempo e del Disingannoâ? (â??Beauty Reconciled in the Triumph of Time and Enlightenmentâ?) HWV 46a written in 1707. With â??La Bellezza ravvedutaâ?, Handel composed an allegorical and particularly dramatic oratorio right at the beginning of his oratorio compositions. In this work, there is no chorus inclined towards reflection. Not only do the four allegorical figures, Bellezza (Beauty), Piacere (Pleasure), Tempo (Time), and Disinganno (Enlightenment), listen to each other and react to the ideas presented by the others, but this prevailing dramatic principle of dispute is also found in the recitatives.
In 1737, when reworking the oratorio material as â??Il trionfo del Tempo e della Verità â?, Handel approached the task pragmatically. He needed a new non-dramatic work to fulfill the eveningâ??s program for his audience at the Covent Garden Theatre during the fasting season when theatrical performances were prohibited. Although he had excellent Italian vocal soloists, notorious for their pronunciation in Handelâ??s English oratorios and who naturally preferred singing in Italian, Handel found a solution. It was evident to Handel that, in response to the ban on performances of his Italian operas during the fasting season of 1737, he should promptly create a new oratorio in the Italian language but following the three-part â??Englishâ? oratorio form that he had developed in â??Estherâ? HWV 50b in 1732. Unlike in Rome in 1707, he had access to a chorus in London in 1737, and the English oratorio, with its substantial choral sections, a preference for concert-like rather than dramatic composition, and frequent inclusion of organ concertos loosely related to the narrative, was already established.
The new volume of the HHA includes the original version of the 1737 premiere as well as all the surviving early and later versions (the latter being exceptional highlights) of individual musical pieces from â??Il trionfo del Tempo e della Verità â?.

Duration 2 hours, 15 minutes. Baerenreiter Verlag #BA08708_01. Published by Baerenreiter Verlag (BA.BA08708-01). ISBN 9790006537846. 33 x 27 cm inches. Text Language: French. Preface: Prévost, Paul / Macdonald, Hugh. Text: Leterrier, Eugène / Vanloo, Albert. WithL'Etoile, Chabrier composed a light-hearted opera which has increasingly enjoyed revivals in recent years. The plot is introduced by King Ouf I who offers his subjects an execution every year on his birthday. Unfortunately the problem now arises that no crime has recently been committed which might serve as a reason for an execution. Finally, he finds a would-be victim in the young Lazuli. However, according to predictions by the astrologer Siroco, Lazuli's fate is closely linked to the king's own life. The comic opera is further bolstered by a story of mistaken identities which involves a great deal of diplomacy, a love story and a large number of refined, yet catchy melodies. Chabrier was a master of the sensitive and complicated art of musical comedy, a field where he can be compared in equal measure to Offenbach, Rossini and Mozart.
This vocal score is based on the full score edited by Hugh Macdonald which is published as part of the seriesL'Opera francais. - Authoritative Urtext edition based on the seriesL'Opera francais - Original French text with a German singing translation - Comprehensive foreword (Ger/Eng/Fr)

Benvenuto Cellini, premiered in 1838, is inspired by the life of the legendary Florentine goldsmith and Renaissance figure. The premiere was a disatster yet even by Berliozâ??s high standards it contains music of exceptional inventiveness and beauty.
The work is challenging not least due to the three versions which exist:
I The original version (Paris 1) as Berlioz composed it II The version premiered in Paris (Paris 2) after rehearsal and copied into an archival full score III The Weimar version based on the revival in 1852 following changes suggested by Liszt
Our edition offers a solution to the problem of publishing operas which have been heavily revised by their composers, so that any of its many versions may be adopted on stage today.

ISBN 9790006550098. 33 x 26 cm inches. Text Language: Italian. Preface: Terence Best. Text: Carlo Sigismondo Capece. The Italian oratorio La Resurrezione (The Resurrection) was written during Handel’s time in Rome. It was performed on Easter Sunday 1708 with great splendour and extravagance by a large orchestra conducted by Arcangelo Corelli in the Palazzo Bonelli, the Roman palazzo of Handel’s patron the Marchese Francesco Maria Ruspoli. In its dramatic structure and characterisation of the protagonists, the work displays a striking affinity with Italian opera. Lucifer’s raging sixty fourth notes call to mind the demon characters in Venetian opera and Maddalena’s arias are so full of expressive power and virtuosity that Handel later incorporated one of them into his opera Agrippina. The unusual musical richness of this work and the virtuosic and masterly shaping of the arias make it a welcome addition to any concert programme.

Saint Francois D'Assise is an Opera in three acts by Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992). Written in 1972 to 1983 it concerns the Catholic preacher Saint Francis of Assisi and displays the composer's devout Catholic faith. The third volume contains the complete third act of the Opera comprising the final two scenes; Stigma and Death and New Life. Despite his studies of Mozart and Wagner's operas Messiaen vowed that he would never compose one himself however he was eventually convinced by the French president. After feeling unworthy to dramatise either Christ's Passion or Resurrection he eventually chose to portray the life of SaintFrancis of Assisi whose life often reflected Christ's chastity humility poverty and suffering. This unique Opera by the individual Messiaen is a significant contribution to the repertoire and was notably semi-staged as part of the BBC proms series in 2008.

King Arthur was the only one of Purcell's professionally produced operas to have been designed as a semi-opera; the others were all adaptations of earlier plays. Dryden made a real attempt to integrate the music into the drama but since he ascribed to the dramatic conventions of the period which virtually confined music to allegorical or supernatural beings and thier worshippers or servants shepherds and similar characters the main action mostly occurs in the spoken sections and even the two singing characters Philidel and Grimbald speak more than they sing.

It was Mozart?s second opera for the Munich court the first being his opera buffa La finta giardiniera of 1775.Apparently the Munich court itself chose the subject-matter of the new opera: the tragedy Idoménée by Antoine Danchet in André Campra?s operatic setting of 1712. Oratorio in three parts-In quite characteristic fashion for the times Handel’s opera “Alessandro” looks at various episodes in the life and rule of Alexander the Great (356 323 BC). This legendary warrior and military commander conquered large parts of the world before meeting an untimely end at the age of 32. A central conflict in Handel’s opera is Alessandro being in love with two women Lisaura and Rossane who compete for his favour. In addition his claim to be of divine parentage is underlined occasioning him to demand the subservience of his followers which meets with vigorous disapproval.Handel composed “Alessandro” for the Royal Academyof Music to a libretto by Paolo Antonio Rolli in the 1725/26 season. The work was premiered at the King’s Theatre in London on 5 May 1726. “Alessandro” was the first of five operas for the Royal Academy operas which saw Handel compose for three of the most famous singers of his time: Francesco Bernardi (called Senesino) Francesca Cuzzoni and Faustina Bordoni.Ortensio Mauro’s libretto “La superbia d’Alessandro ” which was performed for the first time in Hanover in 1690 in a musical setting by Agostino Steffani and staged again in the city the following year under the title “Il zelo di Leonato” but with numerous alterations served as the source text for Handel’s “Alessandro”. One of the main aspects Rolli had to consider when preparing the libretto for the London performances was to keep the roles of the famous singers of the Royal Academy well balanced yet at the same time to engineer a musical contest between the prima donnas Cuzzoni and Bordoni (Lisaura and Rossane) as well. From a business point of view it made good sense for such rivalry would surely increase public interest in the opera. It is no longer possible to ascertain which changes Handel made during the following performance series of the 1727/28 season. For the performance series of 1732/33 Handel made substantial revisions to the opera: six numbers were deleted in their entirety the finale in part as well and the recitatives were made much shorter with the parts of Cleone and Leonato omitted

Les Troyens - The Trojans: Opera in 5 ActsBerlioz composed Les Troyens towards the end of his life drawing on Virgil?s epic poem The Aeneid which he had admired since his childhood. In his Memoirs he recounts how his father a country doctor read Virgil to him and how the story of Dido?s tragic fate reduced him to tears which he tried hard to conceal. The score was finished in April 1858 but he was unable to persuade the Paris Opera to mount it (his earlier opera Benvenuto Cellini had been a failure there in 1838) and eventually he agreed to allow the last three acts to be performed under the title Les Troyens Carthage. This took place at theThé tre-lyrique an enterprising but ill-equipped theatre in November 1863 and although it was much admired there were no more performances before Berlioz?s death in 1869.In the history of French music Les Troyens stand out as a grand opera that avoided the shallow glamour of Meyerbeer and Halévy but therefore paid the price of long neglect. In our own time the opera has finally come to be seen as one of the greatest operas of the 19th century. The vocal score to ?Les Troyens? presents the text Berlioz conceived as a great five act opera. During the composition of this work between 1856 and 1858 and up until June 1863 Berlioz perceived ?Les Troyens ? as one opera. Because of performance difficulties the composition had to be divided into two operas ?La Prise de Troie? and ?Les Toyens Carthage?.The vocal score is based on the three-volume New Berlioz Edition and also on the one-volume vocal score edition that under Berlioz?s supervision was privately printed in 1861-62 and then distributed. The appendix contains two complete scenes: The Sinon scene from the first act and the original finale from the fifth act.Urtext of the New Berlioz EditionFull score (BA5442) and vocal score (BA5442-90) available for salePerformance material (BA5442-72) available for hire

Ballet héroïque en un prologue et quatre actes-?Za s? was Rameau?s first opera which was entirely devoted to ?la féerie? the enchanted world of myth from the Middle East with its spirits and fantastic creatures. It was first performed on 29 February 1748 at the Paris Opera and was much praised for its expressive power elegance and variety of its music as well as for the charm of its ballet. Although the libretto by Louis de Cahusac was criticised the delightful work proved very popular: it was revived in 1761 and 1769 and for more than two decades received over 100 performances. Like most of Rameau?s operas ?Za s? was extensively revised during the composer?s lifetime and afterwards. Revisions already beganduring the first rehearsals and continued until the first performance. The composer and the librettist Cahusac finally used the Easter period in 1748 to work on those revisions; as well as structural changes and musical substitutions these included some substantial additions to vocal and instrumental movements. The version which was performed after Easter is more convincing both musically and dramatically. In contrast the revivals of 1761 and 1769 the first after Cahusac?s death the second after Rameau?s contained drastic cuts including the entire prologue. For the new volume in the ?Opera Omnia Rameau? the version from Easter 1748 has been chosen as the primary source. For performances a choice can be made between this and the original version; a series of insertions links all the passages with another.

Opera in three acts. Par STRAWINSKY IGOR. New edition of Stravinsky?s largest work, his only full-length work for the theatre, and his first major work in English. It also represents the culmination of his neoclassical years, after which he started to rethink his musical language. Inspired by an exhibition in Chicago in 1947 of a series of Hogarth prints, the depiction of the ironic progress of the spendthrift heir of a miser from wealth via debt to madness and death is, in essence, retained in the opera. Auden and Kallman's 'fable' wittily grafts onto Hogarth?s quest narrative aspects of, among other sources, Classical pastoral, the Faust legend, fairy tale, circus, the Bible and opera in many different manifestations. This is brilliantly matched by Stravinsky?s music, which takes as its source the whole of operatic history from Monteverdi to Verdi via Rossini and Donizetti and large doses of Mozart, yet it is neither parody nor pastiche. The Rake?s Progress can be appreciated on many levels, which might explain why it is still one of only a handful of 20th-century operas never to have been out of the repertoire. / Date parution : 2023-10-31/ Répertoire / Solistes, Choeur et Orchestre

Dramma per musica in three acts-La Calisto one of Cavalli?s most frequently performed operas today was premiered in Venice in 1651 but didn?t achieve its first real breakthrough until the 20th century. The foundation for this success may be the rediscovery of the dramaturgic and musically masterful construction: Faustini interwove several mythological models; the love between the Nymph Kallisto and Jupiter and between Diana and the shepherd Endymion as well as Kallisto?s transformation into a bear and his emanation as a well-known constellation. Numerous amusing minor roles are included and Cavalli succeeded in combining the various storylines and characters to produce an effective musically cohesive whole. This first volume of the new Bärenreiter series of the works of Cavalli presents a critical edition of the musical text and libretto complete with an English translation and provides a comprehensive insight into the development of the genre in Italian opera life of the 17th century.Performance material available for hire.

Par GLUCK CHRISTOPH WILLIBALD. Gluck Iphigénie en Aulide (Vocal Score) Tragedy - Opera in three acts Iphigénie en Aulide is the first of six operas that Gluck composed for the Académie Royale de Musique. In keeping with his plans for operatic reform, he sought to create noble, expressive and natural melodies that did justice to every language and every national spirit while eliminating the “ridiculous distinction” between national styles of music. Although the première was coolly received at first by the contemporary press, “Iphigénie” developed into a tremendous success. The onrush of listeners was said to have been so great that the management of the Paris Opéra considered placing guards in front of the theatre. Now Bärenreiter is issuing the carefully revised and corrected vocal score in a new engraving adapted to meet their current standards. - Revised and newly engraved - Detailed foreword (Ger/Fr/Eng) on the work’s genesis and reception history, together with a summary of the plot - Practical, straight-forward piano reduction - Performance material available for hire (BA5849-72) / Date parution : 2022-07-20/ Répertoire / Solistes, Choeur et Orchestre

Edizione critica a cura di Claudio Toscani-EDIZIONE NAZIONALE DELLE OPERE DI GIOVANNI BATTISTA PERGOLESI (Casa Ricordi in collaborazione con la Fondazione Pergolesi Spontini di Jesi) Based on the anonymous recasting of a libretto derived in turn from La fede tradita e vendicata by Francesco Silvani (1705) Il prigionier superbo by Giovanni Battista Pergolesi was first performed on 5 September 1733 at the Teatro di San Bartolomeo in Naples. With this opera ? his second dramma serio for San Bartolomeo in less than two years ? the young composer (who had already acquired considerable professional stature in the city?s theatres churches and aristocratic circles) reprised a perennially popular subject centered aroundthe dramatic conflict between filial piety and devotion to one?s betrothed. Inserted between the opera?s three acts were the intermezzi of La serva padrona which would soon go on to take all of Europe by storm. The primary source for this edition is a manuscript copy of the score currently housed in the Conservatorio di Musica ?San Pietro a Majella? in Naples and prepared by Giuseppe Sigismondo who was quite probably working from the now-lost autograph. Two other significant manuscript copies of the score also housed in Naples (respectively in the Biblioteca Oratoriana dei Girolamini and the aforementioned conservatory) were consulted along with a number of manuscript copies of individual arias. The edition is furnished with a historical introduction which traces the libretto?s complicated literary lineage and illustrates the circumstances of the opera?s commission genesis premiere and subsequent history: and a critical apparatus containing detailed source descriptions and critical notes for both the text and the music. An earlier version of the last movement of the Sinfonia and an aria for the third act whose text does not appear in the original printed libretto are provided as appendices.

Romantische Opera in three acts-Alfonso und Estrella D 732Romatic Opera in 3 ActsIn late September or early October 1821 Schubert and his close friend Franz von Schober vacationed in the countryside of Lower Austria. Their first stopover was at Ochsenburg Castle which belonged to the Bishop of St. Pölten (a close relative of Schober?s) after which they moved on to St. Pölten itself. Roughly a year earlier two stage works by Schubert had been performed in Vienna: the one-act singspiel Die Zwillingsbrüder and the melodrama Die Zauberharfe. The librettos were both written by the seasoned Viennese playwright Georg von Hofmann who blamed the press for the indifferent reception the two works weregiven by the audience. Schubert and Schober now decided it would seem to write a grand romantic opera uninfluenced by the workaday world of the theatre and beholden solely to their own ideas of what an opera should be.Not until 24 June 1854 was the opera finally performed in Weimar under the baton of Franz Liszt. It only achieved success however in an arrangement by Johann Nepomuk Fuchs that was staged on many German and Austrian stages in 1881 2 allegedly with 'brilliant acclaim'.Urtext of the New Schubert EditionFull score (BA5540) and vocal score (BA5540-90) available for salePerformance material (BA5540-72) available for hire

Complete Edition hardcover Opera buffa in four acts-Premièred at the Vienna Hoftheater on 1 May 1786 Wolfang Amadeus Mozartâ??s and Lorenzo Da Ponteâ??s Le nozze di Figaro may be safely regarded as one of the greatest operatic successes of all times. Yet its success was not entirely due to Mozartâ??s music: on the contrary because of the extraordinary demands it placed on the orchestra (especially the woodwinds) the music even posed an obstacle to the workâ??s spread outside the German-speaking countries. At least equally responsible for the operaâ??s success was the librettist Lorenzo Da Ponte who managed to transform a topical and socio-critical stage play into an opera libretto as effective as it isamusing. Many of the sources for Mozartâ??s first opera from the Lorenzo Da Ponte trilogy only became available to scholars again after the â??New Mozart Editionâ?? volume was published. These include the autograph scores of acts 3 and 4 now held at the Biblioteka Jagiello ka in Kraków significant portions of the original sets of parts and acts 2 to 4 of the conductorâ??s copy from the first performance of 1786.These original sources now available again offer compelling solutions to several previously unresolved questions.Edition based on the Urtext of the â??New Mozart Editionâ?? reflecting the latest musicological researchWith findings from original sources now available againDetailed foreword (Ger/Eng)Full score (BA4565-01) Vocal score (BA4565-92) study score format 22.5 x 16.5cm
