Text: Anon.Programme note: 'Three stones is written on request by Lore Lixenberg to whom the little piece is dedicated. It is three very small songs for solo voice but the singer is also - while singing - playing on 'traces of instruments' - Antique cymbal violin and stones. The texts for all three songs are anonymous - the second song use an anonymous english love poem. In the first and the third songs the text is taken from estruscan writing on stones. Wacht! Euch Zum Streit Gefasset Macht. Par BUXTEHUDE DIETRICH. There is a lot to be said for the argument that the oratorio Wacht! Euch zum Streit gefasset macht, which has been handed down anonymously, is actually the only surviving Abendmusik from Dieterich Buxtehude and that he composed this work, also known as Das Jüngste Gericht, for St. Mary’s Church in Lübeck, where it was probably performed around 1683. For the first time this full-length work, with its richly contrasting style and dramatic action, is made accessible for performance in its original form. Tarik O'Regan's Mass Observation was commissioned for the University of Michigan Chamber Choir Jerry Blackstone conductor thanks to support from the William K. and Delores S. Brehm Choral Commissioning Fund and the Barbara Abramoff Levy Fund.   Composer's note:   Mass Observation is a meditation on the histories of our varied ambivalent relationships with surveillance in its myriad guises. The use of technologies that sate our desires to be watchedand heard (safety tracking empowerment and pride) has in some sense always been able to be weighed against our anxieties around invasions of privacy (physical and psychological harm hacking subjugation and embarrassment). The work takes its title from the British social research organisation Mass-Observation which aimed to record everyday life in the United Kingdom. Founded in 1937 Mass-Observation controversially paid investigators to anonymously record people's conversation and behaviour at work on the street and at various public occasions including public meetings sporting and religious events. Scored for chorus and percussion sextet  Mass Observation ebbs and flows between various polarities (human voices and percussion instruments pitched and unpitched sounds clear and opaque tonalities) over the course of its thirteen movements. There is a ritualistic nature to the overall pacing of the work reminiscent of a liturgical mass setting. The two groups of musicians are rarely aligned: for much of the piece they watch and listen to one another in silence.    Duration approximately: 40 Minutes  

A Spanish Liederbooklet is a short song cycle(of about eight minutes’ duration) for high soprano and piano written for Eileen Hulse in 1988. Eileen gave the first performance accompanied by Graham Johnson at the 1988 CheltenhamFestival. The texts are all Spanish Romances by anonymous authors from the 15th/16th centuries. The songs are sung in the original Spanish.

(Novello New Choral Series)-There is no rose of such virtue is an anonymous mediaeval text already well known through beautiful settings by Britten (in his Ceremony of Carols) John Joubert and others. The poem is ‘macaronic’ (it presents a verse in English followed by a varying Latin refrain). This new version follows the illustrious examples above by remaining strophic and presenting broadly the same music in a succession of slightly different guises. The first verse is a straightforward four-part setting the second gives the melody to the tenors and surrounds them with hushed wordless writing for the other parts and the third explores a freely canonic relationshipbetween the tenor and soprano lines before carrying the previous verse-endings to a higher more exalted pitch and mood. The fourth verse then expands its texture in a free climactic passage evoking the songs of praise sung by the angels. This subsides towards the final verse where the texture of the music attenuates again to four parts and canonic writing (based on the first four notes of the original melody) permeates all of them. This slightly extended statement leads to a hushed final cadence.Francis Pott (b. 1957) began musical life as a chorister at New College Oxford. He held open music scholarships at Winchester College and at Magdalene College Cambridge where he studied composition with Robin Holloway and Hugh Wood while pursuing piano studies privately in London with the distinguished British artist Hamish Milne. Throughout the 1990s Francis was John Bennett Lecturer in Music at St Hilda’s College Oxford and a lay clerk in the Choir of Winchester Cathedral. In 2001 he became Head of London College of Music University of West London later leading research across the University’s Faculty of Arts and acceding in 2007 to its first Chair in Composition. With this opera ? his second dramma serio for San Bartolomeo in less than two years ? the young composer (who had already acquired considerable professional stature in the city?s theatres churches and aristocratic circles) reprised a perennially popular subject centered aroundthe dramatic conflict between filial piety and devotion to one?s betrothed. Inserted between the opera?s three acts were the intermezzi of La serva padrona which would soon go on to take all of Europe by storm. The primary source for this edition is a manuscript copy of the score currently housed in the Conservatorio di Musica ?San Pietro a Majella? in Naples and prepared by Giuseppe Sigismondo who was quite probably working from the now-lost autograph. Two other significant manuscript copies of the score also housed in Naples (respectively in the Biblioteca Oratoriana dei Girolamini and the aforementioned conservatory) were consulted along with a number of manuscript copies of individual arias.
