The reputation of the work is based not only on its unusually concentrated musical structure but also on the original conception of the text: Brahms assembled important passages from both the Old and New Testaments in Luther’s translation so that thoughts on sorrow and consolation would obviously refer to one another. In contrast to many other oratorios of the 19th century Brahms places the choir the voice of the community in the center of this interdenominational celebration of the dead.

Joseph Martin Kraus [1756–1792] composed his Requiem in 1775at the age of 19 for the parish church in his hometown of Buchen Odenwald. This followed the Miserere of 1773 and is the second of his surviving sacred compositions. Already in this early work Kraus shows that he was a representative of the musical “Sturm und Drang.” With all its youthful unconcern towards compositional technique this music displays his seriousness and strength of expression together with a dark instrumental timbre as well as an abruptness or at times brusqueness. Monteverdi’s opera “L’Orfeo” based on the legend of Thracian singer Orpheus and his love of Eurydice is a masterpiece of musical declamation and ornamentation. It was first performed during the 1607 carnevale in the “Palazzo Ducale” in Mantua.When an edition remains true to its sources this certainly does not mean that it is not also practical to use as is demonstrated in this Bärenreiter edition of Monteverdi’s “L’Orfeo”. Edited by Rinaldo Alessandrini the new publication follows the Bärenreiter edition of Monteverdi’s “Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria”.Two contemporary prints of “L’Orfeo” from the years 1609 and 1615 have been passed down to us. Four copies of each of these prints still survive today in public libraries. The later print includes many corrections to the earlier edition and was accordingly used as the primary source for this Bärenreiter edition. However when solving musical problems the editor frequently follows the more coherent style of the earlier print. The numerous interesting variants not only between the two editions but also amongst the eight surviving copies are listed in the critical commentary.This edition of “L’Orfeo” offers in addition to Monteverdi’s somewhat sparse original figures also figures added to the bass line by the editor. The continuo player should however feel free to follow his own judgment. The notation has been when necessary adapted to suit modern practice for example with regard to the clefs. The sections that were originally written in “chiavetta” have been transposed a fifth lower. In the appendix these sections also appear in their original notation in facsimile as well as transposed a fourth lower. The Missa brevis K.140 (Anh. 235d = No. 5) occupies a special position in that it comes close to a pastoral mass a type not otherwise represented in Mozart?s mass oeuvre. As in no other setting of the Ordinary songlike graceful melodies predominate; only the main part of the Credo and the first section of the Agnus Dei stand out with their serious solemn mood.New important evidence for the work?s authenticity has come to light through the discovery of old parts that were written at a time in which a false attribution of another composer?s work to Mozart would not have been possible: a copy at Kremsmünster Monastery which according to Altman Kellner was writtenin Salzburg ?ca. (soon after) 1770? and a copy from Heilig Kreuz Kloster Augsburg of which thirteen parts contain autograph markings by W. A. Mozart. Bernard of Offida 1604 1694 was a Capuchin monk whose saintly life and devotion to the sick and poor caused him to be beatified by Pope Pius VI on 19 May 1795. St. Bernard?s name day falls on the 11th of September (a Saturday in 1797) and it is generally thought that Haydn combined doing honour to the Capuchin monk with the production of a new Mass for his patron the day thereafter.Apparently later performances in Eisenstadt added horns to double the trumpets in the tuttis and just as in the previous Mass the clarinet parts were enlarged; it is almost certain that the new clarinet parts are either by Haydn or (shall we say) ?supervised? by him. As inthe Mass in Time of War conductors have the choice of two orchestrations: with or without doubling horns and with or without the supplementary clarinet parts.The Heiligmesse has always been one of Haydn?s most admired works.
