An expert choral director as well as a highly regarded composer, Ronald Corp has written unaccompanied SATB settings of three famous medieval carol texts, Myn Lyking, The Virgin's Cradle Hymn (Dormi Jesu) and Quem Pastores Laudavere. The idiom is modern yet accessible, with an ear for stylish harmony that includes both modal progressions and colourful added chords, embroidered in some rich yet untaxing divisi writing. The carols may be performed as separate items or as a group, the first two being cradle songs for the Nativity, the third also suited to the celebration of Epiphany on 6 Janaury. Ronald Corp is Founder and Artistic Director of the New London Orchestra and New London Children's Choir, and Musical Director of the London Chorus and Highgate Choral Society.

For SATB unaccompanied Jackson's work couples the expressive language of a medieval Latin hymn with the Collect for St Margaret of Scotland. The use of hockets and isorhythms give the music a deep medieval grounding, whilst the beautifully ornamented melodies bring out a distinctively 'Scottish' sound to this dramatic work.

Vs. 2-5 Text: The First Letter of Peter: Chapter 2.
The words, Surely thou hast tasted that the Lord is good, open the anthem. This gentle and lyrical section, marked by dialogue between the sections of the choir, unfolds and eventually reaches a climax on the words precious in the sight of God. A quick, energetic and imitative middle section soon emerges to proclaim the words, Come, and let yourselves be built, as living stones, into a spiritual temple. Here the spirit of medieval music, the building stones for Western music, is invoked. After the anthem’s primary climax is reached on the words Jesus Christ, a solo soprano emerges from the choral texture to close this work with a serene Amen. The first performance of Dan Locklair’s anthem, In the sight of God took place on Sunday 4 October 2009. The occasion was Dedication Sunday, and the text was selected by John Scott from The First Letter of Peter, vv 2-5. Professor Locklair has provided us with a delightful addition to our repertoire at St Thomas. The work is grateful to sing, well written for voices, lyrical in style with a well-crafted sense of architecture and climax. In every sense it is an enjoyable piece for the choir, quite approachable, and judging from the many positive comments I heard afterwards from members of the congregation, it was very well received. -- Reflections on the premiere by John Scott, Director of Music, St. Thomas Church Fifth Avenue, New York, NY SATB Chorus, a cappella Duration: 4' Text: The First Letter of Peter: Chapter 2, vs. 2-5 Composed: 2009 Published by: Subito Music Publishing Minimum order quantity: 8 copies. Hail Lovely and Pure is a setting for a cappella chorus of a short poem from The Second Shepherds' Play, an English mystery play written in the 15th century by The Wakeï¬eld Master of Northern England. Mystery (or miracle) plays were a form of medieval drama that represented Biblical subjects such as the Creation and the Last Judgment. The text consists of the ï¬rst lines spoken by the shepherds when they entered the stable to celebrate the birth of Jesus. My brother David C. K. McClelland (1947-1976) translated this fragment from the original Middle English and made a small calligraphic version of it which I discovered among his papers. David probably intended to make a larger, more elaborate manuscript of the poem, though if he did so it has not been found.SATB Chorus, a cappella Duration: 13'30 Composed: 2011 Published by: WMC Music (BMI).

To celebrate 25 years of excellence and promotion of new concert works, the New York Virtuoso Singers commissioned 25 contemporary composers for 25 new choral works, all of which now appear on their recording, 25 X 25: Twenty-Five Premieres for Twenty-Five Years. Among the 25 is Richard Wernick's The Devil's Game. Here, Wernick uses The Devil's Verse, a Latin palindrome that still puzzles us today as to its meaning, and appropriately embraces repetitive use of the verse in a musical palindrome of his own.The text is a palindrome (in girum imus nocte et consumimur igni), a rather mysterious one called The Devil’s Verse. Its origin is vague (probably Roman, but possibly Medieval) and it does not surrender its meaning easily; many scholars have fussed over it. It is a riddle as well as a palindrome, in other words a puzzle within a puzzle. My preferred translation, without going into the niceties of Latin grammar, is “We enter the circle at night and are consumed by fire.â€This music is also a palindrome, the outer parts of which are homophonic, while the turning around point in the center (where the basses enter for the first time) is a brief double canon.
