During his second American tour (1938) Paul Hindemith wrote numerous songs for musical amateurs, including traditional children's songs for American schoolbooks, amongst others. With a text by Cecil Roberts, this short, easy-to-sing choral setting is a valuable addition to the repertoire.

There are very few composers who have left such a comprehensive oeuvre covering all genres as Camille Saint-Saens. His vocal music, however, has rather fallen into oblivion - if one leaves aside his 'indestructible' Christmas oratorio (Oratorio de Noel, Opus 12). But apart from that, Saint-Saens, who worked as an organist at various churches from 1852, composed a number of little church music works: settings for different instrumentations, certainly destined to be used in services, including his Ave verum for four-part choir (including organ without pedal ad lib.). It is a simple, yet harmonically rich setting which constitutes a valuable addition to the choral repertoire and an evocative alternative to the common Ave settings.

Andreas Pieper's overall artistic aim to 'build a bridge of confidence to the world behind things' with his music can be heard clearly in his setting of Tollite iugum meum. The Latin-language motet for mixed a cappella choir (SATB) for the Feast of the Sacred Heart (Friday after Corpus Christi) is based on verses from the Gospel according to Matthew (Mt. 11,29). Permeated by changes of time and key, yet easy to master by amateur choirs, the piece is ideal for use in the church's liturgy. The devotion of the Sacred Heart of Jesus centres on the sin and thus also on the sinfulness of man, which is musically realized here through a steady and moderate tempo, with the sinful man standing before God without any instrumental means, completely naked so to speak.

For SATB unaccompanied As Joseph was a-walking is a beautifully serene and atmospheric setting of traditional words on the prophecy of Christ's birth as told to Joseph by an angel. With rich harmonies, striking chromatic moments, and appealing contours, this is an ideal carol for more able choirs.
