'Ave verum was commissioned early in 2011 by Edward Rowntree for the birthday of his father John Rowntree director of music at Douai Abbey in the UK. My aim was to write a piece both short and simple suitable for regular liturgical use. There are of course many wonderful settings of this text already not least those by William Byrd and Edward Elgar both of which I sang as a boy. In this instance I felt their presence as a fellowship and having their music in my head while writing I was encouraged rather than daunted. He has composed for a number of choirs including Commotio Westminster Cathedral Choir the Hildegard Choir and Sospiri and has written commissions for the Edington Music Festival Crossover Intergenerational Dance Group Oxford Youth Dance and The Oxford-Grenoble Association. John regularly performs as a singer and choral director and works as a recording engineer and producer. He has recently been appointed as a Creative Arts Fellow at Wolfson College Oxford.

Reduction For Satb/Organ-John McCabe's Psalm-Cantata arranged for Soprano Baritone SATB choir and Organ by Iain Farrington.This work was commissioned by the English Baroque Choir and their music director Jeremy Jackman who gave the first performance on 16th March 2013 at St. John’s SmithSquare London.'I’ve wanted to write a choral/instrumental piece based on texts from the Psalms for a very long time so this commission from the English Baroque Choir and their music director Jeremy Jackman (to whom the work is dedicated) was a wonderful opportunity to put this idea into practice. I decided to write a kind of latter-day equivalent to the Bachcantatas with two soloists (soprano and baritone). The texts are derived from a variety of Psalm sources: some in Latin some in English a meditation by Savonarola and a Henry Vaughan poem.' - John McCabe

This work was commissioned by the Verbal Arts Centre to mark the opening of its new building at Mall Wall and Stable Lane. 'W.B. Yeats is one of the greatest poets of the twentieth century. He wrote The Motherof God in between two of his most magnificent poems - Byzantium and Vacillation. The words alone inspired this setting. I read them several times and then the music came to me fully grown.' - JohnTavener

The Lamb is John Tavener's setting of William Blake's poem for unaccompanied SATB (Soprano/Alto/Tenor/Bass) choir. John Tavener's mesmerising choral work The Lamb hasbeen a firm favourite since its composition in 1982. Audiences love the beautiful simplicity of the words and the lush harmonies that the different Vocal parts create. The piece was composed by Tavener in just oneafternoon and was dedicated to his nephew's third birthday. Although the piece is unaccompanied a Piano accompaniment is included for rehearsal purposes. This particular piece is challenging yet rewarding with divergent almost discordant parts in the first verse as the poem asks ambiguous questions. During the second verse however the song breaks into an uplifting harmony as the poem resolves to an epiphany. When performed well TheLamb is quietly atmospheric and a joy to hear. So for something special for your four-part choir to perform John Tavener's The Lamb is a hauntingly pretty piece that is sure to leave youraudiences speechless.

The tune is well known as the hymn Let all mortal flesh keep silence from The English Hymnal and this arrangement was commissioned in 2007 by the Oxford choir Sospiri for their CD of Christmas music Videte Miraculum.
