An intriguing contemporary sound for this romantic text from Scripture—you may find yourself swaying and whistling along. The soloist should be comfortable with the syncopation in the verses, while the addition of the background vocals (three voices in close harmony plus a descant) really adds to the aura of the piece, especially in the assembly’s refrain.

The volumes in this new series contain duos, trios and quartets, their degree of difficulty ranging from easy through intermediate to advanced. Every piece is a transcription or an arrangement, since in editing the volumes our primary concern was to provide a collection of valuable and interesting compositions, as freely variable as possible as regards instrumentation, for music school students and also for adults who make music for their own pleasure. The range and pitch of the parts enable the works to be performed on any required or possible combination of the given instruments. In the Easy quartets volume, in addition to independent movements a number of works can be foundthat can be performed together to form suites. Thus from short movements that can also be used separately cycles may be formed which can enliven a little domestic concert, an instrument demonstration or the programme of a performance for a festive occasion. Besides sequences of Renaissance dances, arrangements of Bach chorales, choral works and classical dances, the varied content also includes Romantic movements suitable for enjoyable domestic music-making.

Ecce Sacerdos Magnus (Behold the Great Priest) comes from the early European tradition of plainchant. Bruckner's setting of the responsory, originally scored for eight-part mixed choir, organ and three trombones, brings certain medieval qualities to an otherwise Romantic-era composition. This transcription for 10-part brass choir is appropriate for intermediate level and above and attempts to retain the majesty, power, and beauty of the original piece. It should be approached as a choral piece: connected and fluid. The harmonic language is essentially triadic; great care should be taken in the tuning of each chord throughout the piece. Instrumentation is for: 3 Trumpets in B-flat, 2 Horns, 3 Trombones, Euphonium and Tuba. Listen to the live performance by a young group of musicians conducted by Dr. Paul Stevens, Professor of Horn at KU.

Written after William Shakespeare, Ophelie?s death is a piece by Hector Berlioz. For two female voices (Soprano and Contralto) accompanied by a Piano, this piece tells the story of the death of Ophelie, while she was picking some flowers next to a torrential river. Even though the end of the story is sad, the music is highly lyrical resulting from the combination of the two voices, and the Piano part could be played by an upper intermediate player. Hector Berlioz (1803-1869) was a French Romantic composer who made a significant contribution to music. His best-known pieces are his ''Fantastic Symphony'' and his ''Requiem''..

The “Hallelujah†chorus is the final movement of part two of Handel’s Messiah, the part that comments on Christ’s crucifixion, resurrection, and ascension. The text of the chorus, assembled from Biblical passages by the oratorio’s librettist, Charles Jennens, is from Revelation 19:6, 11:15, and 19:16: “Hallelujah, for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth. The kingdom of this world is become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ, and he shall reign for ever and ever. KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.†This edition has been prepared from the first published score in 1767, with comparisons to Handel’s autograph manuscript now housed in the British Museum. The text has been reproduced here without alterations. However, the beamings of the vocal parts have been modernized for ease of reading (the original material has flags instead of beams for every separate syllable). The piano accompaniment is a reduction of the orchestral material: the first and second violin parts are represented in the upper staff, with only occasional inclusion of the viola, trumpet, and timpani parts, the basso continuo, in its original form, is in the bottom staff. The GIA Historical Music Series edited by Dennis Shrock, presents repertoire suitable for performance by public school, college and university, church, and community ensembles, with the purpose of making available to today’s conductors lesser-known and previously difficult-to-procure historical masterpieces. The music, drawn from the Renaissance through the Romantic eras, is in performance editions based on the most current and rigorous scholarly research. The musical scores reflect original intent of notation, with all editorial markings and emendations clearly identified as such. In addition, preface material accompanying the music contains literal translations of foreign language texts and information regarding the lives of the composers, genres, and relevant performance practices. Dennis Shrock is Director of Choral Activities at Texas Christian University. He has been called one of the top choral scholars in the United States and has received a number of awards for his work. He received a bachelor's degree in music education from Westminster Choir College and both master's and doctoral degrees in choral conducting from Indiana University.

Giovanni Gabrieli's Se cantano gl'augelli comes from a collection of madrigals entitled Il trionfo di Dori. Each madrigal is scored for six voices and each ends with the text Viva la bella Dori (Long live fair Dori). This late sixteenth-century collection of madrigals enjoyed great success and was the model of the famous English collection of madrigals entitled, The Triumphes of Oriana.
