Since January 2008, the first scholarly, critical edition of the works of Max Reger (RWA) is being produced at the Max-Reger-Institute, Karlsruhe. Its design as a hybrid edition breaks new ground in the methods of editorial practice. It comprises three areas of Reger's compositional output: Organ works, Lieder and choruses and, for the first time, Max Reger's arrangements of works by other composers. The first volume in the Songs and Choral Works Series contains, in chronological order, the songs Max Reger composed between 1889 and spring 1899 in Weiden and Wiesbaden. The youthful songs WoO VII/1-13, composed by Reger, but without the aim of publication, are published in the Appendix. This first part-volume contains mixed choruses composed by Reger between 1890 and 1902. It includes functional music for use in the Catholic liturgy (Opus 61 and WoO VI/12, 19) and the Protestant liturgy (Opus 79f and WoO VI/17, which provides chorale-based four-part settings for a complete church year). Reger wrote both secular folk song settings (WoO VI/10, 11), as well as sacred (WoO VI/13, 14). His Drei Chore [Three Choruses] op. 39, very demanding both compositionally and tonally, were dedicated to renowned choral societies, almost professional in standard. Palmsonntagmorgen WoO VI/18, written as a commission, forms a bridge to Reger's later motets to a certain extent. The third volume in the Songs and Choral Works Series of the Reger Complete Works (RWA) contains the songs Max Reger composed (almost entirely in Munich) between 1901 and February 1903. With these compositions, Reger not only entered into direct competition with the so-called “Munich School†around Ludwig Thuille, Max von Schillings, and Richard Strauss, but also attempted to establish himself more widely as an uncompromising renewer of the genre. The songs contrast with the Romantic song aesthetic through their forward-looking declamatory style and they display a treatment of the piano which goes far beyond conventional song accompaniment. In January 2008 the Max-Reger-Institut (MRI) in Karlsruhe began publishing a scholarly-critical edition of the works of Reger (RWA). This is supported by the Mainz Academy of Sciences and Literature, and as a Hybrid Edition is exploring new approaches in editorial techniques.

The fourth volume of the Lieder und Chorwerke (Songs and Choral Works) from the Reger Hybrid Edition of Works (RWA) presents songs Max Reger composed between November 1903 and July 1905. In his Opus 75 songs, Reger set verses by classic German poets, such as Goethe and Hölderlin, as well as folksong texts in his usual avant-garde manner. In the 30 songs from the first two collections of the Schlichte Weisen, Op. 76, on the other hand, the composer distanced himself from his previous approach to songwriting by adopting a simpler, folk-like style. The popular Schlichte Weisen were also a concession to his publishers' wishes. The songs in Opus 88 were published not by Lauterbach & Kuhn but by Simrock, a firm more willing to accept music that departed from Alltagsgeschmack (everyday or popular taste). The four songs were dedicated to the mezzo-soprano Lula Mysz-Gmeiner.In January 2008 the Max-Reger-Institut (MRI) in Karlsruhe began publishing a scholarly-critical edition of the works of Reger (RWA), supported by the Mainz Academy of Sciences and Literature. Volume 11 of the “Songs and Choral Works†Series contains the Drei Chöre op. 6 (1892), Reger’s only original composition for a mixed vocal scoring and piano, in which he used his two-color method of notation for the first time (musical text in black, performance instructions in red). In addition, the volume contains the piano reductions of some of the choral-symphonic works which Reger composed between 1903 and 1914 – the Gesang der Verklärten op. 71, Psalm 100 op. 106, Nonnen op. 112, Einsiedler op. 144a and the Requiem op. 144b, and the Weihegesang WoO V/6 for alto, mixed choir and winds. In January 2008 the Max-Reger-Institut (MRI) in Karlsruhe began publishing a scholarly-critical edition of the works of Reger (RWA). Max Regers Easter Motet was probably composed in October 1911 as a commission for the Chorbuch fur die Kirchenchore Sachsens [Choirbook for the Church Choirs of Saxony], which was published by Breitkopf & Hartel in 1912. Hence, the piece was composed around the time Reger took up his position as kapellmeister of the orchestra at the court of Meiningen, a position he had deeply desired. In this work, Reger sets a baroque text from the Himmlische Lieder [Celestial Songs] of 1641 by Johann Rist (1606-1667) to music for five-part choir a cappella. These lyrics were not found in the hymnbook of the regional church of Saxony, but in others, such as Hanover.

Max Reger’s setting of Psalm 100 is one of the “grand style†choral-symphonic works of the classical modern repertoire. Contrapuntal skill in the tradition of Bach combines with overwhelmingly powerful expressiveness, rich in contrasts. The full harmonic and stylistic breadth of the early 20th century sings out, not only in frenetic song, but also in the search for awareness in quieter passages. Reger’s opulence, tonal and contrapuntal almost throughout, finally culminates in a double fugue with an off-stage orchestra similar to the trumpets of Jericho over “Ein feste Burg ist unser Gottâ€. The composer’s declared aim was: “The psalm must go so brilliantly, that all will be simply ’bowled over‘.â€.

Reger's cantata for Good Friday, based on the famous Passion hymn by Paul Gerhardt, was composed in 1904 and belongs to a group with 4 further choral cantatas - Reger's independent and most comprehensive contribution to a key family of protestant church music. The Carus edition of these works is intended to make Reger's choral cantatas accessible for musical practice and musicological reasearch for the first time in a modern critical edition. In order to encourage the spread of Reger's choral works in the anglo-saxon countries, a singable English translation has been added. Score and part available separately - see item CA.5040300.

The choral cantatas are Reger's most personal and most substantial contribution to one of the principal categories of Protestant church music, and they are only major works in this field by one of the foremost composers of his time. This is true despite the fact that Reger himself does not appear to have considered the cantatas to figure among his principal compositions, as he gave them no opus numbers. In contrast to the three other chorale cantatas of Reger which exist in a definitive form, there is no record of the place or date of the first performance of O wie selig, or indeed of any performance of it during the composer's lifetime.
