After Eclair de lune for three principal snare drums, three ensembles and electronics, and after my Concerto for two violas written for Tabea Zimmermann and Antoine Tamestit, I felt compelled to compose a new work for double soloist, and ended up choosing the piano. First of all from a desire to write for Varduhi Yeritsyan and François-Frédéric Guy, but also because the confrontation between that orchestral instrument, itself duplicated, and a symphonic mass offered me infinite sound perspective options. Though the piano writing contains nothing radically innovative, the profusion of repeated notes (using both instruments and in simultaneity) creates a percussive dynamic timbre ranging from a murmur to a violent surge. Often in echo, most of the time in simultaneity, the two soloists quite simply comprise a meta-instrument, counterpoint being rather absent from this score that favours the collision between energies over the superimposition of lines. As this 22 minute voyage progresses, several thematic elements emerge (tolling in the instrument's low register, virtuosic lines with certain notes doubled and 'frozen' by the orchestra), united by an often static harmony, which imparts a sensation of continuity to this veritable rhapsody. / contemporain / Répertoire / 2 Pianos et Orchestre

for the Left Hand for Piano and Orchestra-In 1929 Paul Wittgenstein a pianist and war veteran who lost his right arm in the Great War commissioned Maurice Ravel to write a concerto for him to perform. The result was one of Ravel’s most thrilling compositions and for Wittgenstein the most important of the many works he commissioned over the course of his career. This scholarly-critical edition of Ravel’s Piano Concerto For The Left Hand is based on previously inaccessible and unknown sources. The editor Douglas Woodfull-Harris was able to consult manuscripts in the private library of the Paul Wittgenstein Estate which allowed him to retrace thework’s evolution from Ravel’s autograph working copy to the first printed edition. A source of key importance to our new edition is a handwritten French copy of Ravel’s own Piano reduction (the autograph is inaccessible) that he gave to Wittgenstein to facilitate rehearsing the work. This copy is the sole source reflecting Wittgenstein’s own interpretation and containing his changes to the final cadenza. It also helps us to understand omissions in the first edition of the score as well as the Piano reduction and enabled the editor amongst other things to correct a great many notes which could be found in previous editions including the solo Piano part. The Piano reduction in our edition contains both Ravel’s and Wittgenstein’s fingering. Also included is a solo part without fingering thereby giving pianists the opportunity to enter their own fingering after having studied those of Ravel and Wittgenstein. Full Score-Carl Vine’s Piano Concerto No. 1 (1997) is one of three large-scale works composed with pianist Michael Kieran Harvey in mind the others being his first two piano sonatas. Its composer describes it as ‘a conscious and continuous tribute to the Piano Concerto as a medium and historical entity’ a fact most apparent in the slow movement with its long melodic lines evoking both Ravel and Bach. This 25-minute concerto is cast in the familiar three-movement form with fast outer movements framing a central slow movement. The outer movements share some material (particularly in some lively conversational interchanges between piano and trumpet) and also some typicallypianistic glitter across the orchestra with harp and glockenspiel ensuring that the piano is less of an outsider than might have otherwise been the case.
