The composer wrote of his work as follows: In the music of Hungary, folk songs are manifestly of great importance, on the other hand our ancient airs and dances play a modest role. For this work I have been influenced by dances of the 17th century, written by unknown amateurs in a relatively simple style. Most of these dances were recorded between the 14th and 18th centuries under the usual form of tablature notation. My interest in this music was first captured in the 1940s. I was so fascinated that I decided to give these melodies new life. I fitted the little eight-bar dances together into ternary and rondo forms, and leaning on early Baroque harmony and counterpoint, I attempted a reminiscence of that atmosphere of the provincial Hungarian Baroque.

Capturing the Blue Riband musically celebrates the excitement and sense of occasion experienced when traveling aboard the grand, early 20th century transatlantic liners, such as the Queen Mary and Lusitania. The Blue Riband was the coveted trophy bestowed on the vessel that clocked the fastest transatlantic time. The energetic opening and closing sections of this piece evoke the exhilaration of taking to the sea in this historic race of prestige, while a contrasting section conveys the sense of grandeur and honor central to the era and the award. The Warriors is a processional march suitable for festival performances or ceremonial purposes, such as a graduation. Written in the style of the noted English composers of the early 20th century, this piece could be a good introduction to the more involved works of Holst, Vaughan Williams, Jacob or Grainger.

Inspired by George Inness' 1855 painting The Lackawanna Valley, Anthracite Blaze depicts the tragic early 20th century mine fires that destroyed many boomtowns in that area of Pennsylvania. This piece is bold and sets the mood with a seriousness that will hold the attention of your students and audiences. This piece sounds far more sophisticated than it is technically to play.

Al Hayes was one of seven pseudonyms used by famous march composer Henry Fillmore. Fillmore became so popular and was so prolific in the early part of the 20th century that he had to resort to pennames as to not compete with himself. This is yet another tuneful, well-written march by Fillmore that has been given new life in this setting by arranger Laurie Lafferty. This is the perfect march for use as a festival warm-up that is of a moderate difficulty.

Ralph Vaughan Williams' Heroic Elegy and Triumphal Epilogue was composed in 1901. The Elegy dates from January and the Epilogue towards the end of the year, in early November. After some revision by the composer, both movements were performed by the Leeds Municipal Orchestra, conducted by Vaughan Williams, on the 21st January 1905 and this appears to have been the last performance of the work in the UK. The manuscript surfaced in the US in 1966 and is now in the Beinecke Library of Yale University.
