Orchestra SKU: PR.11641867S Composed by William Kraft. Full score. Duration 16 minutes, 25 seconds. Theodore Presser Company #116-41867S. Published by Theodore Presser Company (PR.11641867S). UPC: 680160683208. Contextures: Riots -Decade '60 was commissioned by Zubin Mehta and the Southern California Symphony Association after the successful premiere of the Concerto for Four Percussion Soloists and Orchestra. It was written during the spring and summer months of 1967. Riots stemming from resentment against the racial situation in the United States and the war in Vietnam were occurring throughout the country and inevitably invaded the composer's creative subconscious. Contextures, as the title implies, was intended to exploit various and varying textures. As the work progressed the correspondence between the fabric of music and the fabric of society became apparent and the allegory grew in significance. So I found myself translating social aspects into musical techniques. Social stratification became a polymetric situation where disparate groups function together. The conflict between the forces of expansion and the forces of containment is expressed through and opposition of tonal fluidity vs. rigidity. This is epitomized in the fourth movement, where the brass is divided into two groups - a muted group, encircled by the unmuted one, which does its utmost to keep the first group within a restricted pitch area. The playful jazzy bits (one between the first and second movements and one at the end of the piece) are simply saying that somehow in this age of turmoil and anxiety ways of having fun are found even though that fun may seem inappropriate. The piece is in five movements, with an interlude between the first and second movements. It is scored for a large orchestra, supplemented by six groups of percussion, including newly created roto-toms (small tunable drums) and some original devices, such as muted gongs and muted vibraphone. There is also an offstage jazz quartet: bass, drums, soprano saxophone and trumpet. The first movement begins with a solo by the first clarinetist which is interrupted by intermittent heckling from his colleagues leading to a configuration of large disparate elements. The interlude of solo violin and snare-drum follows without pause. The second movement, Prestissimo, is a display piece of virtuosity for the entire orchestra. The third movement marks a period of repose and reflection and calls for some expressive solos, particularly by the horn and alto saxophone. The fourth movement opens with a rather lengthy oboe solo, which is threatened by large blocks of sound from the orchestra, against an underlying current of agitated energy in the piano and percussion. This leads to a section in which large orchestral forces oppose one another, ultimately bringing the work to a climax, if not to a denouement. Various thematic elements are strewn all over the orchestra, resulting in the formation of a general haze of sound. A transition leads to the fifth movement without pause. The musical haze is pierced gently by the offstage jazz group as if they were attempting to ignore and even dispel the gloom, but a legato bell sound enters and hovers over both the jazz group and the orchestra, the latter making statements of disquieting finality. Two films were conceived to accompany portions of Contextures. The first done by Herbert Kosowar, was a chemography film (painting directly into the film using dyes and various implements) with fast clips of riot photographs. The second was a film collage made by photographically abstracting details from paintings of Reginald Pollack. The purpose was to invoke a non-specific response - as in music - but at the same time to define the subject matter of the piece. The films were constructed to correspond with certain developments in the piece and in no way affect the independence and musical flow of the piece, having been made after the piece was completed. Contextures: Riots - Decade '60 is dedicated to Mehta, the Southern California Symphony Association and the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra. The news of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King came the afternoon of the premiere, April 4, 1968. That evening's performances, and also the succeeding ones, were dedicated to him and a special dedication to Dr. King has been inserted into he score. All the music that follows the jazz group - beginning with the legato bell sound playing the first 2 notes to We shall overcome constitutes a new ending to commemorate Dr. King's death. $43.99 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 2 to 3 weeks

Ballet Suite in 5 movements (revised version)3222; 4331; timp, perc, hp, pno; stgs Duration: 24' Composed: 2008 Published by: Alla Pavlova Music Although it maintains the charm of the original Hans Christian Andersen tale, Alla Pavlova's Thumbelina is a considerable musical, visual and narrative expansion of the story to make it suitable as a full-length ballet and family-programming alternative to The Nutcracker. Musically, it is scored for full symphony orchestra ([3,2,2,2]-[4,3,3,1]-[timp.,perc.]-[Hp]-[Strings], Percussion: Bass dr., Snare dr., Wooden Block, Tambourine, Triangle, Glock., Vibraphone, Celesta) and contains not only many beautiful, lyrical and moving waltzes and other classical themes, but also rhythms such as tango, boogie-woogie and ragtime. Narratively, the story has been adapted to include a varied and colorful cast of characters. The Thumbelina Suite (which has been recorded by the Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra for Naxos) can be heard at http://www.allapavlova.com/listen.html or by clicking on the image below. Orchestra SKU: BA.BA06861 Sinfonie (1923-1928). Composed by Leos J...(+)
Orchestra SKU: BA.BA06861 Sinfonie (1923-1928). Composed by Leos Janacek. Arranged by LeoÅ¡ Faltus and MiloÅ¡ Å tedron. This edition: complete edition, urtext edition. Linen. Complete Critical Edition of the Works of Leos Janacek H/3. Complete edition, Score, Set of parts. Duration 40 minutes. Baerenreiter Verlag #BA06861_00. Published by Baerenreiter Verlag (BA.BA06861). ISBN 9790260104211. 34.3 x 27 cm inches. LeoÅ¡ Janácek’s symphonic fragment Dunaj (The Danube) dates from the period of the composition of “Katya Kabanovaâ€. The composer was not concerned with a musical-picturesque description of a river landscape, but with the mythical link between women’s destinies and water.
“Pale green waves of the Danube! There are so many of you, and one followed by another. You remain interlocked in a continuous flow. You surprise yourselves where you ended up – on the Czech shores! Look back downstream and you will have an impression of what you have left behind in your haste. It pleases you here. Here I will rest with my symphony.†Thus Leoš Janácek described the idea behind the composition project which occupied him in 1923/24. However, after further work, it remained incomplete in 1926. His “symphony†entitled Dunaj has survived as a continuously-notated, four-movement bundle of sketches in score form. It is one of the works which occupied him until his death. The scholarly reconstruction by the two Brno composers Miloš Štedron and Leoš Faltus closely follows the original manuscript.
A whole conglomeration of motifs stands behind the incomplete work. What at first seems like a counterpart to Smetana’s Vltava, in fact doesn’t turn out to be a musical depiction of the Danube. On the contrary, the fateful link between the destiny of women, water and death permeates the range of motifs found in the work. It seems to be no coincidence that Janácek, whilst working on the opera Katya Kabanova, in which the Volga, as the river bringing death plays an almost mythical role, planned a Danube symphony, and that its content was linked with the destiny of women: in the sketches, two poems were found which may have provided the stimulus for several movements of the symphony. He copied a poem by Pavla Kriciková into the second movement, in which a girl remarks that whilst bathing in a pond, she was observed by a man. Filled with shame, the young naked woman jumps into the water and drowns. The outer movements likewise draw on the poem “Lola†by the Czech writer Sonja Špálová, published under the pseudonym Alexander Insarov. This is about a prostitute who asks for her heart’s desire: she is given a palace, but then goes on a long search for it and is finally no longer wanted by anyone. She suffers, feels cold and just wants a warm fire. Janácek adds his remark “she jumps into the Danube†to the inconclusive ending.
To these tangible literary models is added Adolf Veselý’s verbal account which reports that the composer wanted to portray “in the Danube, the female sex with all its passions and driving forcesâ€. The third movement is said to characterise the city of Vienna in the form of a woman.
It is evident that in his composition, Janácek was not striving for a simple, natural lyricism. The River Danube is masculine in the Slavic language – “ten Dunaj†– and assumes an almost mythical significance in the national character, indeed often also a role bringing death. The four movements are motivically conceived. Elements of sound painting, small wave-like figures in the first movement, motoric, driving movements in the third are obvious evocations of water. And the content and the literary level are easy to discover. The “tremolo of the four timpaniâ€, which was amongst Janácek’s first inspirations, appears in the second movement. It is not difficult to retrace in it the fate of the drowning bather. The oboe enters lamentoso towards the end of the movement over timpani playing tremolo, its descending figure is taken over by the flute, then upper strings and intensified considerably. The motif of drowning – Lola’s despair – returns again in the fourth movement in the clarinet, before the work ends abruptly and dramatically.
One special effect is the use of a soprano voice in the motor-driven third movement. The singer vocalises mainly in parallel with the solo oboe, but also in dialogue with other parts such as the viola d’amore, which Janácek used in several late works as a sort of “voice of loveâ€.

On letting go(Concerning the selection of the texts) In the selection of the texts, I have allowed myself to be motivated and inspired by the concept of 'letting go'. This appears to me to be one of the essential aspects of dying, but also of life itself. We humans cling far too strongly to successful achievements, whether they have to do with material or ideal values, or relationships of all kinds. We cannot and do not want to let go, almost as if our life depended on it. As we will have to practise the art of letting go at the latest during our hour of death, perhaps we could already make a start on this while we are still alive. Tagore describes this farewell with very simple but strikingly vivid imagery: 'I will return the key of my door'. I have set this text for tenor solo. Here I imagine, and have correspondingly noted in a certain passage of the score, that the protagonist finds himself as though 'in an ocean' of voices in which he is however not drowning, but immersing himself in complete relaxation. The phenomenon of letting go is described even more simply and tersely in Psalm 90, verse 12: 'So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom'. This cannot be expressed more plainly.I have begun the requiem with a solo boy's voice singing the beginning of this psalm on a single note, the note A. This in effect says it all. The work comes full circle at the culmination with a repeat of the psalm which subsequently leads into a resplendent 'lux aeterna'. The intermediate texts of the Requiem which highlight the phenomenon of letting go in the widest spectrum of colours originate on the one hand from the Latin liturgy of the Messa da Requiem (In Paradisum, Libera me, Requiem aeternam, Mors stupebit) and on the other hand from poems by Joseph von Eichendorff, Hermann Hesse, Rabindranath Tagore and Rainer Maria Rilke. All texts have a distinctive positive element in common and view death as being an organic process within the great system of the universe, for example when Hermann Hesse writes: 'Entreiss dich, Seele, nun der Zeit, entreiss dich deinen Sorgen und mache dich zum Flug bereit in den ersehnten Morgen' ['Tear yourself way , o soul, from time, tear yourself away from your sorrows and prepare yourself to fly away into the long-awaited morning'] and later: 'Und die Seele unbewacht will in freien Flugen schweben, um im Zauberkreis der Nacht tief und tausendfach zu leben' ['And the unfettered soul strives to soar in free flight to live in the magic sphere of the night, deep and thousandfold']. Or Joseph von Eichendorff whose text evokes a distant song in his lines: 'Und meine Seele spannte weit ihre Flugel aus. And my soul spread its wings wide. Flew through the still country as if homeward bound.']Here a strong romantically tinged occidental resonance can be detected which is however also accompanied by a universal spirit going far beyond all cultures and religions. In the beginning was the sound Long before any sort of word or meaningful phrase was uttered by vocal chords, sounds, vibrations and tones already existed. This brings us back to the music. Both during my years of study and at subsequent periods, I had been an active participant in the world of contemporary music, both as percussionist and also as conductor and composer. My early scores had a somewhat adventurous appearance, filled with an abundance of small black dots: no rhythm could be too complicated, no register too extreme and no harmony too dissonant. I devoted myself intensely to the handling of different parameters which in serial music coexist in total equality: I also studied aleatory principles and so-called minimal music.I subsequently emigrated and took up residence in Spain from where I embarked on numerous travels over the years to India, Africa and South America. I spent repeated periods during this time as a resident in non-European countries. This meant that the currents of contemporary music swept past me vaguely and at a great distance. What I instead absorbed during this period were other completely new cultures in which I attempted to immerse myself as intensively as possible.I learned foreign languages and came into contact with musicians of all classes and styles who had a different cultural heritage than my own: I was intoxicated with the diversity of artistic potential.Nevertheless, the further I distanced myself from my own Western musical heritage, the more this returned insistently in my consciousness. The scene can be imagined of sitting somewhere in the middle of the Brazilian jungle surrounded by the wailing of Indians and out of the blue being provided with the opportunity to hear Beethoven's late string quartets: this can be a heart-wrenching experience, akin to an identity crisis. This type of experience can also be described as cathartic. Whatever the circumstances, my 'renewed' occupation with the 'old' country would not permit me to return to the point at which I as an audacious young student had maltreated the musical parameters of so-called contemporary music. A completely different approach would be necessary: an extremely careful approach, inching my way gradually back into the Western world: an approach which would welcome tradition back into the fold, attempt to unfurl the petals and gently infuse this tradition with a breath of contemporary life.Although I am aware that I will not unleash a revolution or scandal with this approach, I am nevertheless confident as, with the musical vocabulary of this Requiem, I am travelling in an orbit in which no ballast or complex structures will be transported or intimated: on the contrary, I have attempted to form the message of the texts in music with the naivety of a 'homecomer'. Orchestra (Full Score) SKU: HL.14043216 Orchestra Full Score. Composed by Michael Nyman. Music Sales America. Classical, Contemporary. Softcover. 160 pages. Chester Music #CH60952. Published by Chester Music (HL.14043216). ISBN 9781783056200. English. Michael Nyman's Musique A Grande Vitesse (MGV) translates as ‘high speed music’ and was commissioned by the Festival de Lille for the inauguration of the TGV North EuropeanParis-Lille line in 1993. This piece of sheet music runs continuously, but was conceived as an abstract, imaginary journey; or rather five inter-connected journeys, each ending with a slow, mainly stepwise melody which isonly heard in its 'genuine' form when the piece reaches its destination. Thematic 'transformation' is a key to MGV as a whole. Throughout the piece ideas - rhythmic, melodic, harmonic, motivic, textural -constantly change their identity as they pass through different musical 'environments'. The opening bars establish both a recurrent rhythmic principle - 9, 11, or 13-beat rhythmic cycles heard against a regular 8 - and aharmonic process - chord sequences (mainly over C and E) which have the note E in common. (Coincidentally, MGV begins in C and ends in E). A later scalic, syncopated figure (again first heard over C, E and A)begins the second section, featuring Brass, in D flat. The topography of MGV should be experienced without reference to planning, description or timetables. Its tempo changes and unpredictable slowings downbear no logical relation to the high speed of the Paris-Lille journey, while the temptation to treat MGV as a concerto grosso, with the Michael Nyman band as the ripeno, was resisted: more suitably theband (amplified in live performance) lays down the tracks on which MGV runs. $60.00 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 2 to 3 weeks

It takes a historico-critical approach and seeks to document the history of the works and writings by shedding light on their transformations, thus identifying the various versions as witnesses of evolving aesthetic and historical positions. Eislers complete oeuvre (only a limited number of his works had penetrated the publics awareness up until the 1990s) first became the object of an editorial undertaking when the Eisler - Gesammelte Werke (EGW) was founded by Nathan Notowicz. It was later placed under the direction of Manfred Grabs and Eberhardt Klemm, and began issuing its publications in 1968 through the intermediary of the Deutscher Verlag fur Musik in Leipzig. However, only four volumes of music and five volumes of writings were published. World premiere of the orchestral version: Stuttgart, January 1, 2018World premiere of the piano version: Mito, June 17, 2017 Have a look into EB 9283. New music (post-2000). Full score. Marche fatale is an incautiously daring escapade that may annoy the fans of my compositions more than my earlier works, many of which have prevailed only after scandals at their world premieres. My Marche fatale has, though, little stylistically to do with my previous compositional path; it presents itself without restraint, if not as a regression, then still as a recourse to those empty phrases to which modern civilization still clings in its daily utility music, whereas music in the 20th and 21st centuries has long since advanced to new, unfamiliar soundscapes and expressive possibilities. The key term is banality. As creators we despise it, we try to avoid it - though we are not safe from the cheap banal even within new aesthetic achievements. Many composers have incidentally accepted the banal. Mozart wrote Ein musikalischer Spass [A Musical Jape], a deliberately amateurishly miscarried sextet. Beethoven's Bagatellen op. 119 were rejected by the publisher on the grounds that few will believe that this minor work is by the famous Beethoven. Mauricio Kagel wrote, tongue in cheek, so to speak, Marsche, um den Sieg zu verfehlen [Marches for being Unvictorious], Ligeti wrote Hungarian Rock; in his Circus Polka Stravinsky quoted and distorted the famous, all too popular Schubert military march, composed at the time for piano duet. I myself do not know, though, whether I ought to rank my Marche fatale alongside these examples: I accept the humor in daily life, the more so as this daily life for some of us is not otherwise to be borne. In music, I mistrust it, considering myself all the closer to the profounder idea of cheerfulness having little to do with humor. However: Isn't a march with its compelling claim to a collectively martial or festive mood absurd, a priori? Is it even music at all? Can one march and at the same time listen? Eventually, I resolved to take the absurd seriously - perhaps bitterly seriously - as a debunking emblem of our civilization that is standing on the brink. The way - seemingly unstoppable - into the black hole of all debilitating demons: that can become serene. My old request of myself and my music-creating surroundings is to write a non-music, whence the familiar concept of music is repeatedly re-defined anew and differently, so that derailed here - perhaps? - in a treacherous way, the concert hall becomes the place of mind-opening adventures instead of a refuge in illusory security. How could that happen? The rest is - thinking.(Helmut Lachenmann, 2017)CD (Version for Piano):Nicolas Hodges CD Wergo WER 7393 2 Bibliography:Ich bin nicht ,,pietistisch verformt. Composed for Steven Isserlis in 2004, Carl Vine's Concerto for Cello is an exhilarating 20-minute work that traverses a vast emotional palette. The concerto begins arrestingly, with soloist pitted against orchestra, though as it develops the two factions move towards union. A slow chorale led by the cellist frames the central section, whilst relentless motor rhythms drive the work to its close. $41.99 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 1 to 2 weeks

Over the years Janácek’s uvre has increasingly received the recognition it so richly merits and performances of his works are becoming more and more frequent. This development is, however, offset by a manuscript tradition so disorderly that some of Janácek’s works continue, as before, to be played in versions which are heavily adapted, corrupt or otherwise contrary to the composer’s intentions. Thus, a critical edition of Janácek’s music is indispensable for scholars and performers alike.
This editon presents an authentic printed text based on all available sources for each work. In addition to the musical text, each volume also contains a critical report (Czech / German), a rendition of deleted or rejected versions, and a comprehensive appendix of facsimiles.

| 1712 Overture Orchestra Theodore Presser Co.
Orchestra SKU: PR.416415760 For Really Big Orchestra. Composed by ...(+)
Orchestra SKU: PR.416415760 For Really Big Orchestra. Composed by PDQ Bach. Edited by Prof. Peter Schickele. Study Score. With Standard notation. Duration 11 minutes. Theodore Presser Company #416-41576. Published by Theodore Presser Company (PR.416415760). UPC: 680160636532. 9 x 12 inches. The 1712 Overture stands out in P.D.Q. Bach's oeuvre for two reasons, among others: it is by far the most programmatic instrumental piece among those by the minimeister of Wein-am-Rhein so far unearthed, and 2) its discovery has led to a revelation about the composer's father, Johann Sebastian Bach, that has exploded like a bombshell on the usually serene musicological landscape. The overture is based on an anecdote told to P.D.Q. Bach by a cousin, Peter Ulrich. Since P.U. Bach lived in Dudeldorf, only a few miles down the road from Wein-am-Rhein, he was P.D.Q.'s closest relative, and he was, in fact, one of the few members of the family who was on speaking terms with P.D.Q. The story, related to P.D.Q. (fortunately for us posterity types) in a letter, may be summarized thus: The town of Dudeldorf was founded by two brothers, Rudi and Dieter Dudel, early in the 18th century. Rudi remained mayor of the newborn burg for the rest of his long life, but Dieter had a dream of starting a musicians' colony, an entire city devoted to music, which dream, he finally decided, could be realized only in the New World. In 1712, he and several other bagpipers sailed to Boston, never to return to Germany. (Henceforth, Rudi became known as der deutscher Dudel and Dieter as the Yankee Dudel). Unfortunately, the head of the Boston Musicians' Guild had gotten wind of Dudel's plans, and Wilhelm Wiesel (pron. VEE-zle), known none too affectionately around town as Wiesel the Weasel, was not about to share what few gigs there were in colonial America with more foreigners and outside agitators. He and his cronies were on hand to meet Dudel's boat when it pulled into Boston Harbor; they intended to prevent the newcomers' disembarkation, but Dudel and his companions managed to escape to the other side of the bay in a dinghy, landing with just enough time to rent a carriage and horses before hearing the sound of The Weasel and his men, who had had to come around the long way. The Germans headed West, with the Bostonians in furious pursuit. soon the city had been left far behind, and by midnight so had the pursuers; Dieter Dudel decided that it was safe for him and his men to stop and sleep until daybreak. When they awoke, they found that they were in a beautiful landscape of low, forested mountains and pleasant fields, warmed by the brilliant morning sun and serenaded by an entrancing variety of birds. Here, Dudel thought, her is where I will build my colony. The immigrants continued down the road at a leisurely pace until they came upon a little church, all by itself in the countryside, from which there suddenly emanated the sounds of a pipe organ. At this point, the temptation to quote from P.U. Bach's letter to P.D.Q. cannot be resisted: They went inside and, after listening to the glorious music for a while, introduced themselves to the organist. And who do you think it was? Are you ready for this -- it was your old man! Hey, no kidding -- you know, I'm sure, that your father was the guy to get when it came to testing new organs, and whoever had that one in Massachusetts built offered old Sebastian a tidy sum to go over there and check it out. The unexpected meeting with J.S. Bach and his sponsors was interrupted by the sound of horse hooves, as the dreaded Wiesel and his men thundered on to the scene. They had been riding all night, however, and they were no spring chickens to start with, and as soon as they reached the church they all dropped, exhausted, to the ground. The elated Germans rang the church bells and offered to buy everyone a beer at the nearest tavern. There they were taught, and joined in singing, what might be called the national anthem of the New World. The melody of this pre-revolutionary patriotic song is still remembered (P.D.Q. Bach quotes it, in the bass instruments, near the end of the overture), but is words are now all but forgotten: Freedom, of thee we sing, Freedom e'er is our goal; Death to the English King, Long live Rock and Ross. The striking paucity of biographical references to Johann Sebastian Bah during the year 1712 can now be explained: he was abroad for a significant part of that year, testing organs in the British Colonies. That this revelation has not been accepted as fact by the musicological establishment is no surprise, since it means that a lot of books would have to be rewritten. The members of that establishment haven't even accepted the existence of P.D.Q. Bach, one of whose major works the 1712 Overture certainly is. It is also a work that shows Tchaikowsky up as the shameless plagiarizer that some of us have always known he was. The discovery of this awesome opus was made possible by a Boston Pops Centennial Research Commission; the first modern performance took place at the opening concert of the 100th anniversary season of that orchestra, under the exciting but authentic direction of John Williams. $39.99 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 2 to 3 weeks

Orchestra SKU: BA.BA08899 Tragédie in one prologue and 5 acts. Composed by Jean-Philippe Rameau. Edited by Denis Herlin. This edition: urtext edition. Paperback. Symphonies / Versions from 1739 and 1744. Score, anthology. RCT 35 A, 35 B. Baerenreiter Verlag #BA08899_00. Published by Baerenreiter Verlag (BA.BA08899). ISBN 9790006523351. 33 x 24 cm inches. Preface: Denis Herlin. Text: Charles-Antoine Leclerc de La Bruere. “Dardanus†is Rameau’s third “Tragdie lyrique†composed for Paris after “Hippolyte et Aricie†and “Castor et Polluxâ€. With its multi-facetted music it represents quite a high point of this genre. Its performance history is remarkable in that within only five years two clearly different versions were being performed.
The new critical edition by Denis Herlin for the first time offers the possibility to reconstruct the version of May 1744 in addition to the version of 1739. Also, the Appendices include the complete performance material of the version of April 1744, many parts of which could not be heard since. Last but not least the changes of the successful re-staging of 1760 are presented.
This performing edition contains all the purely instrumental numbers of the opera in their various versions. Apart from the preludes and ritornellos, these are above all the diverse dance numbers.

To all extents and purposes, Germany is the land of artists, wrote Mendelssohn in 1831 while on his travels in Italy; but Italy, he added, is the land of art. Everywhere he went in Italy, the 22-year-old composer found impulses for his symphony. Symphony; Romantic. Study Score. 96 pages. Duration 28'. Breitkopf and Haertel #PB 5522-07. Published by Breitkopf and Haertel (BR.PB-5522-07). ISBN 9790004212530. 6.5 x 9 inches. To all extents and purposes, Germany is the land of artists, wrote Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy in 1831 while on his travels in Italy; but Italy, he added, is the land of art. Indeed, everywhere he went in Italy, the 22-year-old composer found impulses for his symphony: I have to save the work until I have seen Naples. But although the country fired his inspiration: It will be the merriest piece that I have ever written, he did not actually write the Italian Symphony there. This did not occur until early 1833, when Mendelssohn obtained a commission from London, where he then conducted the first performance in May 1833. Begun the following year, his revision of the piece remained fragmentary, and the composer no longer performed the work himself. The familiar London version thus represents the only closed form of the work which the composer presented to the public. This is the version of the Italian Symphony that is now appearing in the Breitkopf Urtext collection based on the Complete Edition. $21.95 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 3 to 4 weeks

Herrmann wanted to write a musical portrait of his friend and colleague Alfred Hitchcok, so choose motifs from the movie The Trouble With Harry, one of Hitchcock's more personal and humorous films. This single-movement work for Orchestra employs some of the more familiar elements of Herrmann's compositional style: short musical phrases repeated and then repeated again in other positions, sharp use of dynamics among them. From the first note, the creepiness begins.Bernard Herrmann was among the very greatest of all composers of music for cinema and there are many who avow that he was the greatest of all. A very short list of the films for which this award-winning composercreated soundtracks includes Citizen Kane, The Man Who Knew Too Much, Vertigo, Jason and Argonauts, Fahrenheit 451, Obsession and Taxi Driver. He had a long and fertile association with Alfred Hitchcock during the most productive period of Hitchcock's career and with Orson Welles from the time of the Mercury Theatre on the Air. In addition to his conducting and composing work for the entertainment world, Herrmann wrote concert pieces, including a symphony, opera and cantata. $44.50 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 2 to 3 weeks

Invisible Cities for Orchestra by Swedish composer Britta Byström (2013). Prog...(+)
Invisible Cities for Orchestra by Swedish composer Britta Byström (2013). Programme note: Invisible Cities is an orchestral piece inspired by the Italian writer Italo Calvino's novel 'Le città invisible' (1972). The novel consists of many short poetical descriptions of wondrous cities. This is what the explorer Marco Polo reports to Kublai Khan of what he has seen during his travels. Gradually though Kublai Khan begins to suspect that Marco Polo all the time describes one and the same city but in many different ways: Marco Polo's own hometownVenice. This was also my musical idea: to present the same motif in many different ways. The piece has eleven movements just as the novel consists of eleven different kinds of cities. Before every new musical 'city' there is a 'walk' – a little piano line which takes the listener from one city to another. This piano line is a quotation from Witold Lutoslawski'sVenetian Games. There are also other music connected to Venice hidden in my piece: the well-known Barcarolle by Offenbach and some fragments from Carnival in Venice. These references are the 'invisible cities' of my piece the material hidden under the music's surface. Marco Polo explains to Kublai Khan: 'To distinguish the other cities' qualities I must speak of a first city that remains implicit. For me it is Venice.' (c) Britta Byström Britta Byström’s careful ear for musical qualities such as timbre and resonance has resulted in an idiom that could almost be labeled impressionistic. She began composing already as a teenager and later studied composition at Musikhögskolan in Stockholm with Pär Lindgren and Bent Sørensen.

Music for the Film-Dmitri Shostakovich's score for the 1964 Russian film-adaptation of Shakespeare's Hamlet. When Grigori Kozintsev's Hamlet was released in 1964 it gained critical acclaim from audiences in the UK and US despite the fact that Shakespeare's work was not heard in its original language. This praise was at least in part due to Shostakovich's impressive score. As one New York Times reviewer described: 'The lack of this aural stimulation - of Shakespeare's eloquent words - is recompensed in some measure by a splendid and stirring musical score by Dmitri Shostakovich. This has great dignity and depth and at times anappropriate wildness or becoming levity'. This miniature score from the Shostakovich Complete Edition includes commentary by Koichi Owa in English and Japanese.

Nico Muhly's It Remains To Be Seen was written in 2006 for for full Orchestra and has a duration of approximately 11 minutes. Composers Note: It Remains to be Seen was written for the Boston University Tanglewood Institute’s 40th Anniversary Gala in July 2006. The piece begins with a chord identical to the one at the end of Stravinsky’s Firebird suite and proceeds into a series of charged nocturnal episodes. I wanted to treat the feeling of having just heard music and being expected to make one’s own – referencing the experience of leaving a BSO concert at the shed walking back to BUTI on a curvy back road arguing about music in pairs and threes and at the sign of bright headlights from behind reorganizing in single file as a car filled with happy concert-goers speeds by. The piece is a nine-minute navigation of an excited occasionally illuminated dark road filled with arguing cars fragments of remembered music and a constant propulsive pulse. Nico Muhly

The Seven Great Operas in Facsimile Editions of Mozart?s Autograph Scores
?Idomeneo?, ?Die Entführung aus dem Serail?, ?Le nozze di Figaro?, ?Don Giovanni?, ? Così fan tutte ?, ?Die Zauberflöte ?, ?La clemenza di Tito? ? Mozart?s seven great operas, his brilliant contribution to music theatre and world culture, are unequalled in their depth of human characterisation and musical expression.
Through happy coincidence, all seven opera scores have survived almost complete in Mozart?s manuscript. The Packard Humanities Institute (PHI, Los Altos , California ) has now embarked on producing a facsimile edition of the seven autograph scores. Mozart scholars, libraries and of course all lovers of Mozart?s stage works now have the opportunity of acquiring these priceless manuscripts in flawless reproductions. At the same time, all risks about preserving Mozart?s legacy for the world of music are taken care of.
The Packard Humanities Institute (PHI) charitable foundation, known for its philanthropic programmes in the arts and sciences, has forged an ideal cooperation for the Mozart project. Under the scholarly direction of an editorial board (Ulrich Konrad , David Packard, Wolfgang Rehm , Christoph Wolff; General editor Dietrich Berke) the International Mozarteum Foundation Salzburg and the libraries where Mozart?s manuscripts are held are working together with the Packard Humanities Institute.
The production of the volumes is exquisite, for the digitalization of the manuscripts has been undertaken using the latest technology, which allows for an astounding level of authenticity and precision in detail. The printing follows the uncompromisingly high standards demanded by the edition. All seven volumes include essays on the history of literature and ideas by Hendrik Birus , Hans Joachim Kreutzer and Robert Miller as well as musicological introductions by leading Mozart scholars in German and English. The facsimile edition will be distributed by Bärenreiter- Verlag .
- consolidation of Mozart manuscripts held in different places
- highest level of precision in reproduction and authenticity of colour through use of the latest technology
- unique offer thanks to project sponsorship by the Packard Humanities Institute (Los Altos, California)
Precision in reproduction thanks to cutting edge technology
In preparing the manuscripts for reproduction, equipment was used in line with the highest technical standards currently available. Mozart?s original manuscripts of the seven operas are held by several libraries. For five of the operas, the different acts have even ended up in different libraries following World War II. Thus, the autograph of Act I of ? Così fan tutte ? is in the Jagiellonian Library in Kraków and the second act in the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin ? Preußischer Kulturbesitz . In order to achieve a uniformly high level of precision in reproduction and authenticity of colour both within a work and for all seven editions, the use of the same technical equipment in all the different places was a prerequisite. Specialist from the Salzburg firm ? Kirchberger Photography? were employed, were provided with the latest equipment by the Packard Humanities Institute and also given special additional training in the modern technology by specialists in the USA. Proofs of each edition were compared with the original in each location and improved until the likeness could not be bettered in all details. Mozart?s music and text notation is reproduced extremely clearly, and even those places where Mozart corrected or had rubbed out marks he had already made, appear in these editions in a previously unmatched transparency.

From early in the 17th century until the form engaged the interest of Johann Sebastian Bach various notable German composers - including Rosenmüller Fischer Fasch and Telemann - had contributed to the development of the orchestral suite or 'Ouverture' whose name betrays its French theatrical origins. From Bach himself only four such suites have survived thanks to the diligence of C.F.Penzel a student at the Thomasschule from 1751 who made copies of Bach's MSS which he found there. Thus neither the dates nor the order of composition of the suites can be established with any certainty. As to the present suite in D major recent criticism suggests that it mayoriginally have been written for strings only and dates in its final form from around 1731. Penzel's copy of the suite includes significant variants to be played by a solo violin (marked Violino Concertato) which are included here in the Appendices. The score is newly-edited from the extant sources consisting of sets of parts (some in Bach's autograph) and copyist's scores are preserved in the Staastbibliothek zu Berlin - Preußischer Kulturbestitz Musikabteilung mit Mendelssohn-Archiv. This edition replaces the former Eulenburg miniature score edited by Wilhelm Altmann.

Four Pieces For Orchestra was composed by Hans Abrahamsen in 2000-2003. Programme note: In 1983 Hans Abrahamsen wrote the first seven of his Ten Studies for Piano. In the early eighties most composers who wrote for the piano were still making strenuous efforts to distance themselves from the instrument?s romantic past for example treating it as a percussion instrument rather than exploiting its expressive ?singing? potential. The piano?s modern identity as a mechanical rational emotionally cool instrument is reflected in Abrahamsen?s studies 5 7; but in the first four studies Abrahamsen allows the piano to?recollect? its past: especially what the composer calls ?the golden German romantic time full of expression night timelessness dream and the irrational?. Accordingly these first four studies were given German one might specifically say Schumanesque - titles: Traumlied (?Dreamsong?) Sturm (?Storm?) Arabeske (?Arabesque?) and Ende (?End?). While Abrahamsen was in no way dissatisfied with the first four Studies as piano music he soon felt the urge to expand them in both time and space. In their new identity as Four Pieces for Orchestra created between 2000-2003 the original studies nearly doubled in length while the forces required expanded from one soloist to an orchestra of Mahlerian/Straussian dimensions including instruments beloved by the late-romantics: Wagner tubas bass trumpet guitar mandolin and the hammer used so memorably in Mahler?s Sixth Symphony and Alban Berg?s Three Pieces for Orchestra. The results are not so much ?arrangements? of the four piano studies more recompositions. A helpful comparison might be made with certain painters: Cézanne portraying the same mountain from different angles; or Monet obsessively returning to Rouen Cathedral in different lights and weather conditions. Abrahamsen himself remembers an important visit to the Munch Museum in Oslo where he saw how Munch painted the same subject

Grand Orchestre

Eine Tondichtung In Symphonieform In Zwei Teilen und Fünf Sätzen. Par MAHLER GUSTAV. “Titan”, the early five-movement version of the “Symphony No. 1”, has never been published before. Universal Edition is proud to make this score available for the first time in connection with the Complete New Critical Edition. Mahler composed the work at the beginning of 1888 in Leipzig. In 1889 it was subsequently premiered as a “symphonic poem” in Budapest.
Our first edition of “Titan” contains the history of its genesis, reviews of the performances in Hamburg and Weimar, a discussion of the programmes and the underlying ideas behind the work, colour prints of important sources, and an extensive critical commentary that describes the variants, problematic passages and all editorial interpolations.
At this point, we would like to refer to a statement by the International Gustav Mahler Society (IGMG), which is very concerned about Mahler editions that are not up to date with musicological research and thus cannot do justice to the composer's intentions.

Carl Maria von Weber's fame rests mainly on ?Der Freischütz'. The unprecedented success of this opera overshadowed all his other works and contributed to their increasing fall into oblivion. Certain works such as ?Preciosa', ?Oberon', and ?Euryanthe', the overtures, solo concertos and piano sonatas, the lieder and chamber works enjoyed great popularity and were widely known in Germany and abroad as late as the second half of the 19th century. However, any chance of a revival of Weber's influential and substantial oeuvre was wasted in the 1920s, when a complete edition - begun by Hans Joachim Moser and with potential contributors including Wilhelm Kempff, Hans Pfitzner, Max von Schillings, Fritz Stein and Richard Strauss - failed after the third volume.Ever since there have been numerous attempts to restart a complete edition of Weber's works, but as this kind of project would have required the co-operation of scholars from both sides of the inter-German border, the political situation after 1945 was not conducive to any such enterprise. Careful negotiations led to the first tangible steps in the 1980s. The intention, right from the beginning, was to place Weber's work in context, and not to separate his musical output from his influential work as a writer, critic and organiser in the musical field, but to publish his compositions together with his letters, diaries and other literary output as the best way to document the cross-fertilisation between his musical, literary and practical activities.Since the German re-unification both working-parties concerned - at the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin, and at the Musikwissenschaftliches Seminar, Detmold/Paderborn - have co-operated on the complete edition of the musical works (c. 45 volumes in 10 series: sacred music - cantatas, odes and other occasional works - stage works - lieder and vocal works - orchestral works - chamber music - music for piano - piano reductions - miscellanea, arrangements and orchestrations - works of doubtful attribution). The diaries (6-8 vols.) are edited in Berlin and the letters (8-10 vols.) and other writings (2 vols.) in Detmold. This complete edition aims to be a reliable basis of scholarly debate as well as for the authentic performance practice of Carl Maria von Weber's music. Conforming to the standards of recent historico-critical editions, the textual material will be based on all available authentic sources, accompanied by a detailed documentation of the genesis and a list of variants for each work. The musicological importance of the works will be evaluated by placing them in their historical context, the presentation of their genesis, history and Critical Commentaries. The letters, writings and diaries will be treated as inter-related and relevant to each other in the commentaries, therefore readers should benefit from a wealth of concise information and cross-references. / Score

Composer's Program Note Repertoire operas occationally have orchestral suites: Bits and pieces of overture interlude etc. tied upin a bouquet of 'schönste Tränen'. Contemporary opera usually wither after the first season so the focusis on getting people to come and have a sniff before it's too late. Consequently it seemed obvious to meto start making orchestral excerpts from my operas that are meant to be played before the premiere (andafter please); I call them 'opera trailers' when they're substantial enough to be considered independent works and 'opera demos' when they're relatively short and moreappetizer-ish. SNOW WHITE'S MIRROR is a full scale two act dramatic opera written for the Danish National Opera. The opera is a modern re-telling for grown-ups of the brothers Grimm's fairy tale: Snow White is a self-centered teenage narcissist and the villain of the opera; she ends up loosing everyone but herself either because she kills them or because they decide they can't stand being around her anymore. But apparently she's o.k. with that...The music is intended for a large audience: it's basically pop music done with all the craftmanship of aclassical composer who's equally at home with large scale symphonic form avantgarde technique opera singing - and modern pop. The Trailer is in three movements. It contains three sections of the opera; the prelude an interlude close to the beginning of the second act and the final scene but one. It's a gloomy sort of trailer starting out in grand title sequence style moving on to a decidedly odd piece where Snow White find her way to the dwarfs (who're creepy junkies doing pornography to get money to buy dope) and ending in kind of an eerie rejection mood: Everyone still alive walks out on Snow White singing 'skin as white as snow hands red with blood soul as black as ivory'.(NM 2010)

The impact of his masterly approach to composition especially in the treatment of theorchestration could still be felt in the 20th century. New York is the city which fascinates and inspires Ruders. Time and again he goes back there to work. 'Manhattan Abstraction' (1982) subtitles - a symphonic skyline for large orchestra - was conceived there. Ruders’ Brittish colleague Oliver Knussen defines the piece as: - a performance of an extraordinary Morden-Times-like construction. It is a sort of symphonic sculpture which in the composer’s own words words propels forth from one particular inspiration: the New York profile as seen from Liberty Island one icy cold January day with it’s open clear sky and dazzling sun light. 'Manhatten Abstraction' appears as an amalgam of some of the compositorical habits foundin present pieces. For instance are present here compositorical ideas and melodic loans from 'Capriccio Pian’e Forte' 2nd String Quartet(1979) 'Four Compositions' (1980) and 2nd Piano Sonata(1982). The question at hand is mainly concerned with the enhanced elaboration of Ruders’ use of the classic English change-ringing system: a permuting method pre-determining the order of tone-appearances and /or tone groups; a serial technique in other words. In spite of the rigidly fixed material Ruders somehow manages to chisel out a personal expression by way of emphasising contrasting elements already existing within the material itself. The spiky repetitive sections form a counterpart to a more human violin-solo. This dialectical tension is - as hinted by the title - a symphonic abstraction of a fascinating metropolis; the most beautiful and the ugliest. The subtitle: a symphonic skyline reflects the musical erection of the Manhattan profile which under the clear sky materializes into the most powerful and compelling man-made sculpture on earth. Thus 'Manhattan Abstraction' is a homage to as well as a vision of this giant contraption of concrete glass and chrome.

An English translation of the title would read: “Symphony no. 4 - Indian Rose Garden and Chinese Witch See; after an idea by Adolf Wölfli (1864-1930) and dedicated to him.” Wölfli was from 1895 (31 yearsold) until his death in 1930 confined to the mental hospital at Waldau near Bern Switzerland. Although he had no technical knowledge of music he considered himself to be a great composer and his paintings were almost always covered with long festoons of six-lined (!) music staffs. In 1912 Wölfli ordered paints and paper for a planned ´Musikbüchlein´ which was to be published in 1920 under the title “Indischer Roosen-Gaarten und Chineesischer Hexensee”. (Wölfi uses his characteristic illustrative phonetic spellings with double vowels). The work was never completed and I took it upon myself to realize Wölfli’s idea according to his vision but of course within my own preconditions. The double and suggestive title is typical of Wölfli´s polarized conception of the world which shifts between idyll and catastrophe. This polarization is of almost Chinese nature in that no idyll exists without catastrophic disturbances just as there is a black “spot” in the white “fish” and vice versa in the famous Yin/Yang symbol. One might explain this idea with a quote by the Norwegian author Knut Hamsun: “A prisoner on his tumbrel is wheeled to the scaffold. A nail chafes at his behind; he moves over and feels more

Britta Byström's Trumpet Concerto No.2 Screen Memories for Trumpet solo and Orchestra (2012). Trumpet solo part: WH31514B Dedicated to Tine Thing Helseth. Premiered February 28 2013 by the Nordic Chamber Orchestra and Tine Thing Helseth conducted by Johannes Gustavsson at Stadshuset in Sundsvall Sweden. Programme note Screen Memories is the English translation of a Freudian term (Deckerinnerung is the original German term). In Swedish it is called 'täckminnen'. The term means strong but seemingly meaningless childhoodmemories as 'cover' for substantial memory. The title is something of a pun as the work is based on the composition Voyage Into the Golden Screen (1968-69) by Danish composer Per Nørgård – a modern classic in which Nørgård presents his compositional technique known as the infinity series. The technique which I freely apply in the “Trumpet Concerto” enables the development of an endless melody! In that sense “Screen Memories” adapts a second understanding: memories of the composition of Nørgård. Nørgård in turn adopted the title from a song by British songwriter Donovan – the first phrase of this song is in my trumpet concerto. And then there's a third musical reference: the second movement of Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 8 'Pathetique'. I once heard it in concert while a massive rainstorm appeared and nearly drowned the music. A musical memory incorporated in the composition (the percussionist uses a “rain stick”). Screen Memories thus becomes a concert full of musical memories dressed in new clothes. It is written for and dedicated to the soloist Tine Thing Helseth whose soft and virtuoso

Saint François D'Assise is an opera in 3 acts by Olivier Messiaen. This volume is part of the edition that includes the books with the full Orchestra scores as well as the explanations analysis and comments of each tableau. It is focused on the “Act 3 Tableau 7. Les stigmates” which tells of the moment when Saint Francis receives the stigmata which proves that God approves his status of Saint. This tableau is happening when Saint Francis is alone in a cave in Verna. The music with a choir depicts a feeling of anxiety until the Choir interprets the voice of the Christ. Saint Francis is then hit by some lightfrom a cross that appeared to him in the exact same places where the Christ was hit by the Stigmata. The Orchestra is really strong on that tableau and depicts one of the most important moments of the opera Based on the life of Saint Francis of Assisi this opera is set in Italy and is divided as per below: Act I: 1. La croix 2. Les laudes 3. Le baiser au lépreux Act II 4. L’ange voyageur 5. L’ange musicien 6. Le prêche aux oiseaux Act II 7. Les stigmates 8. La mort et la nouvelle vie This opera was first played at the Paris Opera in 1983. Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992) was a French Organist and composer passionate about Ornithology and one of the most important composers of his century. Inspired by Japanese music he had a very special way of composing and his work can be identified by its complexity its diatonic aspect its harmony with limited transposition its colour and its additive rhythms. He composed many works related to ornithology and birdsong including the Bird Catalogue in 7 volumes and the Treatise on rhythm colour and ornithology in 7 volumes.

This volume is part of the edition that includes the books with the full Orchestra scores as well as the explanations analysis and comments on each tableau. It is focused on the “Act II Tableau 4. L’Ange voyageur” which describes the appearance of the “Traveller Angel” to Saint Francis. This tableau is introduced by each of the themes of Brothers Leon Élie and Bernard and the theme of Philemon the bird. It opens as the Brothers are confronted to the Angel but don’t recognise him straight away except for BrotherBernard who reacts wisely. The Angel then requests to talk to Father Francis and the tableau finishes introducing the following part: “Act II Tableau 5. L’ange musicien”. Within this tableau 4 birdsong can be heard that is reminiscent of Messiaen's 'Bird Catalogue' collection. Based on the life of Saint Francis of Assisi this opera is set in Italy and is composed as per below: Act I: 1. La croix 2. Les laudes 3. Le baiser au lépreux Act II 4. L’ange voyageur 5.
