Commissioned by the Northern Michigan University Jazz Ensemble, this jubilant tone poem portrays the Great Northern Railway that ran for a century from the Great Lakes to the Pacific Ocean. Beginning quietly in the distance, the chart builds steadily through a series of colorful variations and roars by at full throttle five minutes later. The fast swing train groove drops a beat every four measures (4-4-4-3) from start to finish. This is truly a marvel of modern jazz ensemble writing for proficient groups by one of the nation's most innovative composers. Duration 6:00.

This new composition redefines the jazz ensemble ballad. Exotic timbres and vertical sonorities evoke cerulean blue colors that make this true chamber music for your ensemble. Using effects drawn from Romantic music of the late nineteenth century, muted Brass, saxophones, guitar, bass and drums combine to create lush backdrops for the showcased tenor sax and piano soloists.

First released in 1954, this setting of the 19th-century folk song popularized by Glenn Miller in 1939 begins with an 8-bar marcato intro before settling into the familiar swing groove. The thematic build is gradual and dramatic -- saxes alone, then saxes with trombones, then saxes, trombones and trumpets together -- and the finishing shout is loud and strong. All rhythm section parts are fully notated, brass ranges are very accessible, and no improvisation is required. Duration 2:05.
