En janvier 1920, le critique Henri Collet a appelé Poulenc et cinq de ses amis compositeurs, le `Groupe des Six`, par analogie avec les Cinq Russes. Ce fut une marque pratique pour se faire de la publicité et Jean Cocteau, leur auto-proclamé porte-parole, fut rapide à saisir toutes les opportunités. Mais chacun des six insistait sur le fait que ce n'était qu'un groupe d'amis, sans but musical commun.
La Suite pour Piano de Poulenc et ses Impromptus pour piano se mariaient parfaitement avec les dires de Cocteau - ils sont clairs, insouciants et amusants. Mais les Promenades écrites en 1921 pour Artur Rubinstein, correspondent au côté plus sérieux de Poulenc, qui avait déjà du mal à se faire entendre.
Cette célébration en dix mouvements de différents modes de transport explore un certain nombres de nouvelles techniques musicales qui intriguaient les compositeurs dans les années 20. The Litanies a la Viergne Noire signaled a new phase in Poulenc’s career one marked by religious choral works of a mysterious ethereal and often extremely moving nature. Not surprisingly this was influenced by personal losses in his life.A beautiful work for female (SSA) voices which features a modal chant-like style which avoids conventional cadences. Written the year before his death and dedicated to the memory of Sergey Prokofiev this piece is the last of Poulenc's wind sonatas and is a work of profound poignancy and delicacy. Poulenc would not live to see the piece tofruition as the work was published posthumously. This is the 2004 updated and revised version edited by Millan Sachania.

Pour Choeur Mixte A Cappella-In 1936 attempting to overcome his reputation for musical flippancy Poulenc began studying the motets of Montverdi with Nadia Boulanger. Around the same time his close friend and contemporary Pierre Octave Ferroud had died. Amidst this personal crisis Poulenc was led back to the Catholicism of his youth and this confluence of spiritual and musical interests led him to compose the Messe en Sol Majeur (Mass in G). Just Brass No. 29-Francis Poulenc (1899-1963) was an energetic French composer who is known for both his light-hearted instrumental works and his more serious sacred and choral music. His Sonata For Horn Trumpet AndTrombone (1922) is one of his early mischievous pieces. Relatively short at only 8 minutes anyone can find time to fit this piece into their programme. As part of the indispensable Just Brass collection this edition has been edited by Philip Jones and Elgar Howarth. Included with the full score are part books for all three parts with the Trumpet part provided in both C and Bb.
