Par BAY WILLIAM. This is a collection of 155 solos for trumpet, cornet, or flugelhorn. Ninety-one were recorded on various trumpets, 37 were recorded on cornet and 27 on flugelhorn. One hundred and fourteen are original compositions and the remaining 41 are arrangements on favorite hymns and sacred songs. A warm-up study is also included. This compilation comprises 6 books; Trumpet Chants; Trumpet Tone Poems, Trumpet Ballads and Waltzes, Trumpet Partitas, Soliloquies for Flugelhorn, Trumpet or Cornet, and Hymns for Unaccompanied Trumpet. Many of the pieces have been revised and new ones have been added. Each book was recorded with a different instrument although Trumpet Ballads and Waltzes and Trumpet Partitas were both recorded with a cornet. However, a different mouthpiece was used for each of those two recordings, thus giving each a slightly different sound. Both the instrument and the mouthpiece used are noted on the title page of each section. Most of the selections are aimed at developing tone and lyricism on the trumpet. However, Trumpet Partitas definitely addresses technical issues. There is a wealth of music in this collection, and it will add much to trumpet practice and performance repertoire. The musical axis of the opera Bildbeschreibung consists of the relations between the soloistically treated instruments, the parts of which are based on the realisation by the performers of layers of sound ? understood not just as the exploration of their own instrument, but above all the presentation or representation in sound of the text. Each of the parts forges an area of ?pictorial description?, so it is designed to lead the listener to ask what came before and how this came about. The multiplicity and ambiguity of such speculation gives us an open catalogue of representa-tions. As it is open, it is impossible to indicate the number of associations that would be appropriate ? too few or too many. Quite simply, the greater whole perceived from the perspective of a single soloist or through the prism of a single aria entitles us to highlight the idea of Bildbeschreibung in the same way that we can begin to see or analyse any picture, starting with a single detail, motif or figure. So such an aria is not an excerpt like the hits from the history of classical opera. Chagall's stained-glass windows for the synagogue in Jerusalem gave an impulse for the four movements for Trumpet and Organ commissioned by the city gallery in the West Bohemian town of Cheb. The author commented on his choice of instruments: 'The solemnity of the large panes of stained glass made me imagine the sound of the Organ and the intensity and brilliance of the sheaves of bright colours called for the shrill tone of the Trumpet.'Eben combines the two instruments in anoriginal manner: both parts retain a great deal of independence progressing in their own rhythmic patterns intersecting in places. The modal composition typical of Eben's method is confronted here with atonality enabling the final unison of the two instruments to sound with a monumental effect.Since its origin in 1976 Windows has been one of the most frequently performed pieces by the composer. The individual movements of the cycle are named after colours: The Blue Window The Green Window The Red Window and The Golden Window. The Organ part was revised by Milan Slechta the Trumpet part by Ladislav Kozderka.
