In Latin Anima means soul but it is also a Jungian expression for the female element of the male. Anima> forms the first part of a nameless trilogy of solo concertos, which emphasizes reflective moods. In this cello concerto it is mainly the melodic aspect that is in the foreground, a bitter-sweet but always gentle song for cello.

Cello Concerto was composed by Thomas Agerfeldt Olesen in 2015. Written to Nicolas Altstaedt on commission from Arhus Symfoniorkester and Die Duisburger Philharmoniker with support from The Danish Arts Foundation First perfomance in Arhus Sept 24, 2015. Programme note: This concerto contains a lot of technical and structural stuff that I have forgotten all about now. Without it though, the piece would have been a big mess of emotions, since it was written while my family and I were taking care of my mother as she was terminally ill. I recognize it having become a kind of rondo. The music wanted a place to return to, and perhaps it is due to the fact that my mother was alwayssomeone I could return to when everything else was exploding. In the end, the rondo dies and the music goes somewhere else, like all mothers.

Doll Steps In Venice by the Danish composer Bent Sorensen . Doll Steps In Venice has been composed for solo Clarinet and Orchestra. Sorensen 's musical language is sadi to be undeniably of the present day, both aesthetically and technically. The music does, however, appear to be pervaded with memories, wisdom of experience and old dreams, of the inevitability of transitoriness and parting. It is a flickering, glittering world where things seem to disappear at the slightest touch.

Commission ed by John Storgards, Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra and Nordic House in the Faroe Islands. Dedicated to the composers daughter Malan. Preface / Programme note: From the Edda verse 31 Three roots there are that three ways run Neath the ash-tree Yggdrasil, Neath the first lives Hel, neath the second the frost-giants, Neath the last are the lands of men. The idea behind the Symphony is the story of Yggdrasil, The Tree of Life, from the Old Norse mythology. The Ash-tree reaches all the way into the sky and has three roots, each growing into three different places. One root grows into the Land of Hel (Hel is the goddess of Hell), called Helheim, another into theLand of Frost-Giants, called Jotunheim, and one root grows into the Land of men, called Asgard. And the Ash-tree reaches into the sky. In the crown of the tree lives a squirrel, which moves fast around the tree and spreads gossip, both between the three roots and between three roots and the crown of the tree. The Edda is a large collection of Old Norse poems, collected in the 12th Century by the Icelandic poet and historian Snorri Sturluson. Per Norgard BACH TO THE FUTUREFor many years I have been specially fascinated by three of the preludes of Bach's Well-tempered Piano, and I wish with this concerto-version for percussion-duo and orchestra to highlight some of the structural aspects of these pieces: It is my belief that there is a tradition in the music history, that makes it possible to let certain germs in an earlier period unfold into new, but not heterogenious, dimensions of a perhaps several hundred years later phase of the tradition. This concerto is a result of several years collaboration with Uffe Savery and Morten Friis (Safri-Duo), as well in original compositions - (Resonances, Repercussion, Resume in EchoZone I-III) as in arrangements of the 3 Bach preludes, preparing for the enormous stylistic challenges of this work.A few introductory comments to each movement:I Movement: The archetypal sequence of broken chords within C-major has established itself as almost a cultural code, allowing the composer of 1996 to tell his tale-in-tones only by stressing and colouring the tones in the original piece without changing the pitches or (relative) durations as a 'palimpsest' containing as well the old as the new musical tale simultaneously. Later in the movement, this singleline is multiplied by the, till then discrete, but permanently pervading, proportion - throughout the piece - very close to the 'Golden Section'(= 3:5:8.t.i:8 before repetition, 5 before starting anew from the deepest tone, 3 as the rest etc. unchanged). The 3 tonal levels as well as the 3 relative speeds are treated according to these proportions for certain passages, but even in those the main focal point is directed at the freely invented melody (by me) incarnating itself solely by the unpermutad sequels of the original prelude.II Movement: One feature of the F sharp-prelude pervades all the six minutes-long second movement: A 4 times identical rhythmic pattern = 6:4:3:2:3:4:6 - as an hourglass-shaped timeshape - inspired me by the closeness of this pattern to a shape within the infinity-drumming of my invention, called Wide-Fan and Narrow-Fan , referring to pattern consisting of 8:4:2:1:2:4:8, the familiarity with the above - quoted one being obvious. New and old elaborations of this pattern-pair permeates the movement, especially since the Safri-Duo by their performance of my Repercussion had augmented my appetite for including this idiom in a wider context:III Movement: Without the existence of the d-minor-prelude I doubt that I would have dared to write a work like this, since it is the inexhaustible, rare quality and pecularity of this piece, which has stimulated my feeling of wonder and 'modernity' (or: eternity!) of this piece, of which I know of no equal in its special respect: the perpetual ambiguity of melodic foothold in the rhythmic ostinato of a broken descending triad, co.

Between - Cello Concerto No. 1 - 3 movements for Violoncello and Orchestra, composed by Per Norgard in 1984-85. Premiered by Frances-Marie Uitti and the Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra conducted by Michael Schonwandt, August 30th 1985. Programme note: 1. In Between 2. Turning point 3. Among The title of each movement suggests one aspect of the relationship between soloist and orchestra. In the first movement the solist is caught up in a conflict between the expression of inner feelings (solo) and influences from external sources (orchestra), the latter of which the soloist in a simple accompanying role, but after a turning point in the middle of the movement the soloist assumes adominating role. In the final movement a balance is finally achieved, with the soloist at last being on equal terms with the orchestra. Per Norgard.

New York is the city which fascinates and inspires Ruders. Time and again he goes back there to work. 'Manhattan Abstraction' (1982) subtitles - a symphonic skyline for large orchestra - was conceived there. Ruders' Brittish colleague Oliver Knussen defines the piece as: - a performance of an extraordinary Morden-Times-like construction. It is a sort of symphonic sculpture, which in the composer's own words words propels forth from one particular inspiration: the New York profile, as seen from Liberty Island, one icy cold January day with it's open, clear sky and dazzling sun light. 'Manhatten Abstraction' appears as an amalgam of some of the compositorical habits found in present pieces. For instance, are present here compositorical ideas and melodic loans from 'Capriccio Pian'e Forte', 2nd String Quartet(1979), 'Four Compositions' (1980), and 2nd Piano Sonata(1982). The question at hand is mainly concerned with the enhanced elaboration of Ruders' use of the classic English change-ringing system: a permuting method pre-determining the order of tone-appearances and /or tone groups; a serial technique in other words. In spite of the rigidly fixed material, Ruders somehow manages to chisel out a personal expression by way of emphasising contrasting elements already existing within the material itself. The spiky, repetitive sections form a counterpart to a more human violin-solo. This dialectical tension is - as hinted by the title - a symphonic abstraction of a fascinating metropolis; the most beautiful and the ugliest. The subtitle: a symphonic skyline reflects the musical erection of the Manhattan profile, which under the clear sky, materializes into the most powerful and compelling man-made sculpture on earth. Thus 'Manhattan Abstraction' is a homage to, as well as a vision of, this giant contraption of concrete, glass, and chrome.

Stratifica tions was composed by Hans Abrahamsen in 1973-75 and was premiered in the summer 1977 by the Iceland Symphony Orchestra at the Young Nordic Music Festival in Reykjavik. Programme note: The stratifications referred to in the title unfold two different levels. There is the stratification of the time dimension produced by the opposition of contrasting parts, at the same time the polyphony, the presence of several simultaneously sounding layers, is of great importance to the music. By garish colours and clear-cut outlines a polyrhythmic simultaneousness of simple melodies is produced with more gestic music and other material which give a peculiar set piece-like effect inthe sound picture. The new simplicity details are here woven together in a new kind of complex whole. Stratifications begins with a series of concretistic masklike pictures of the music. It is like seeing lantern slides. But this fictive form crackles and the music gets attentive and real. The music is in a night-mare condition, where it is not getting anywhere in spite of a great dynamic display. But finally is liberating itself and rising in triumph.

Il luminations - Capriccio For Flute And Orchestra was composed by Erik Norby in 1977. Programme Note:The title should rightly be pronounced in French (same spelling), as the piece was composed for and is dedicated to French flute virtuoso Jean-Pierre Rampal, who premiered ILLUMINATIONS in connection withhimreceiving the Danish Sonnings Musikpris in 1978.The title reflects my endeavour to create different illuminative effects in sound, for which the flute is an excellent medium, with its apparent ability to transform lightphenomena into musical shapes. Tue music in ILLUMINATIONS sometimes sounds like glitteringreflections, sometimes like a roaring bonfire. The absence of ordinary flutes in the orchestra further enables the soloist to shine above a darker orchestral background. Several motives and shapes are illuminated along the way, and the music progressesin kaleidoscopic pattems of prismatic refractions. Erik Norby.

Interna tionally renowned minimalist Philip Glass composed this Piano concerto in the traditional three-movement form. The first movement, titled ‘The Vision’ is classic Glass, with a steamroller quality that suggests theimmensedrive and ambition the two explorers needed to draw on for their journey into the wilderness. At the beginning of the second movement, the theme in the solo Indian Flute musically represents the name ‘Sacajawea’, theShoshoneIndian mother and guide who assisted the explorers on their way, for whom the movement is named. The final movement, entitled ‘The Land’, is an exploration of expansiveness, both of the land that was being explored, butalso of thegeologically expanded time over which the landscape has evolved, and the great changes that followed Lewis and Clark’s journey. This concerto is designated as part of The Concerto Project recording series started byGlass in theyear 2000, currently in four volumes and including eight concerti.American composer Philip Glass is widely known as one of the most celebrated, influential and prolific of the modern composers. He is frequentlyreferred to as aminimalist, though he prefers to call himself a composer of ‘music with repetitive structures.’ His operas, among them the renowned Einstein On The Beach, are performed across the globe, and he has created workfor small andlarge ensembles, film and experimental theatre, and founded his own performing group, The Philip Glass Ensemble.
