Rachmaninoff: Zdes' Khorosho, Op. 21, No. 7 (as played by Yo Yo Ma and Kathryn Stott) ARRANGED for VIOLIN and Piano.___________________________________________ЗдеÑÑŒ хорошо (Zdes' khorosho, How nice is here) was written in April 1902, in a sweet moment in the composer's life: he had overcome a creative block and had just married his cousin Natalia Sarina. Zdes' khorosho is n. 7 from Twelve Romances, op. 21, a beautiful song that talks about the bond between man, nature and God. It’s also a love song; One of the things I like the most is the balance between contemplation and passion that Rachmaninov accomplishes. The poem, by the Countess Glafira Adolfovna Einerling, a contemporary writer of the composer who wrote under the pseudonym of Galina, simply describes a sunset. I don't know if the landscape portrayed is similar to what Rachmaninov could see from his home but no doubt he felt it part of his own; he even changed the beginning of the poem so he said that the nice place was here. Zdes' khorosho is a song full of lyricism, seemingly simple but demanding for the singer (please pay attention to the pianissimo at the last verse, which seems to arise from nowhere), with an exquisite accompaniment. Some scholars think that the true essence of Rachmaninov is found in songs like that, rather than in his athletic piano concerts.Songs of Comfort and Hope is inspired by the series of recorded-at-home musical offerings that Ma began sharing in the first days of the COVID-19 lockdown in the United States. Over the course of the last year, Yo-Yo Ma’s #SongsofComfort grew from a self-shot video of AntonÃn Dvořák’s Goin’ Home into a worldwide effort that has reached more than 20 million people. Ma and Stott marked the next chapter in the project with this album, offering consolation and connection in the face of fear and isolation. Published by Michael Butkus-Bomier (A0.862657). The Prelude in C# minor was the bane of Rachmaninoff's existence as a performer. Audiences could NOT get enough of it, and he could not bear to play it one more time! Such is Fame and Success. Well, we Normal Humans have had to look at the traditional setting of it, in two grand staves, with enough double-accidentals to blind a scribe, and try to emulate The Master from that pirate's treasure map. No longer. Here is a single-grand staff setting, with only the most minor modifications to accommodate the average hand, and spellings that show the true nature of the chords. The single best aspect of our setting here is the Total Elimination of the crossed-hand octaves throughout. When I realized these were only three or four-note triads, and not a pile of interlocking harmonies, I determined to make things clearer, for myself, and other players. The low notes all correspond to Rachmaninoff's bassline, except for one passage near the end. Only TWO octave doublings have been removed to make a smaller leap from the former lower grand staff to the upper. When I was a young student, this sort of music was baffling to my eyes, but not my ears. Now we can all see it and play it for what it is, an early masterwork, based on S.R.'s training in harmony from the Moscow Conservatory. A note can be the root, 3rd, 5th, 7th, and even 9th of some chord. They are all on display here, with a nice summation at the end, in quietude. MBB.

Verbs is a set of 24 impressionistic preludes for piano left hand alone, composed by Kathleen RyanEach prelude evokes the energy and mood of its title verb. Thus, the preludes utilize a wide range of modern styles and harmonic languages.Wait - to be in readiness or expectation. These preludes hark back to earlier antecedents by Debussy, Rachmaninov, Chopin and J S Bach in their variety and appeal, creating an album rich in contrasts. The project originated in 2006 when [Keith] Porter-Snell asked Ryan to create a set of twenty-four piano preludes for left hand only, one in each key. In her search for a unifying theme, Ryan settled on the idea of verbs, one for each prelude, because a verb conveys a distinct quality of energy and motion. ... Ryan’s eclectic composing style contains elements of jazz, contemporary classical, traditional classical, and her own vision that includes making the piano sing. ... It is hard to believe that these preludes are played with only one hand, as they are full, rich, and sound like they move all over the piano keyboard. All of the titles are one-word verbs and the preludes range in duration from 34 seconds to a little more than four minutes. Some are light and playful and some are more complex and dramatic. The composer’s creative process was to collect self-improvised fragments from several compositional periods and assemble these into a unified setting. The result relies less on traditional classical forms, with thematic elements repeating and transforming while exploring key relationships. The work relies on Romantic idioms with the style imitating Rachmaninoff’s chromaticism, with hints of Debussy and Tchaikovsky. It quotes the famous Dies irae, translated “Day of Wrath,†theme often used by the composers Rachmaninoff, Liszt, and Berlioz. You will also hear the beginning of the nursery rhyme Frère Jacques theme as well, similarly quoted in Mahler’s First Symphony, which creates an unusual juxtaposition. The Variations for Flute and Piano (1990) are a dynamic and virtuosic work consisting of an original theme, ten variations, and a coda. In addition to traditional devices like contrapuntal imitation, inversion, and fragmentation, many of the variations hearken back to earlier periods in music history. Variation III is suggestive of an aria from Baroque opera, Variation VIII spoofs twentieth-century avant-garde music, and the piano part in Variation X evokes Rachmaninoff. The brilliant coda is a pyrotechnic tour de force for both players.

This Americana brass band era two-movement virtuoso solo for E-flat cornet or trumpet from 1871 features a quintet trumpeter accompanied by traditional brass band instruments B-flat cornet, E-flat alto horn, baritone/euphonium and tuba. Included is alternate B-flat cornet for the E-flat solo cornet, alternate B-flat cornet for E-flat alto horn, alternate F horn for E-flat alto horn, and trombone can substitute for baritone/euphonium. The sound file is an actual brass quintet performance of the entire arrangement and not a computer playback of the score.
