This arrangement of Silent Night, or in German, Stille Nacht, would be a wonderful addition to any music library and could be performed for Christmas concerts, recitals, and, especially, church services. It is equally suitable for junior and senior high school students and even older musicians. Depending on their ability, younger musicians would also enjoy playing this selection. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (11 pages). This selection is one of the many arrangements from The Regis Bookshar Trumpet Ensemble's extensive music library which are being made available for the first time.Silent Night is probably the most popular Christmas carol ever written. It was composed in 1818 by Franz Xaver Gruber to lyrics by Joseph Mohr and was first performed on Christmas Eve at St. Nicholas parish church in Oberndorf, a small village in present-day Austria. A young Catholic priest, Father Joseph Mohr, had written the poem, Stille Nacht, in 1816 and had gone to Oberndorf in 1817. The melody was composed by Franz Xaver Gruber, schoolmaster and organist in the nearby village of Arnsdorf. On Christmas Eve, 1818, Mohr brought the words to Gruber and asked him to compose a melody and guitar accompaniment for that night's mass, after river flooding had possibly damaged the church organ. The church was eventually destroyed by repeated flooding and has since been replaced with the Silent-Night-Chapel.According to Gruber, Karl Mauracher, an organ builder who serviced the instrument at the Oberndorf church, was enamored with the song, and took the composition home with him to the Ziller Valley in Tyrol, Austria. From there, two traveling families of folk singers, the Strassers and the Rainers, included the tune in their shows. The Rainers were already singing it around Christmas, 1819, and once performed it for an audience that included Franz I of Austria and Alexander I of Russia. They also gave the first performance of the song in the United States in New York City in 1839. By the 1840's, the song was well known and was reported to be a favorite of Frederick William IV of Prussia. During this period, the melody changed slightly to become the version that is commonly heard today. The version of the melody that is generally used today is a slow, meditative lullaby, or pastoral, differing slightly from Gruber's original which has a moderate tempo. The song has been translated into about 140 languages and has been recorded by many singers across many music genres. The version sung by Bing Crosby in 1935, has sold over 10 million copies as a single.In this arrangement of Silent Night, Regis Bookshar has kept the basic form of this familiar Christmas carol, but has also included a descant during the third verse. Also, in addition to this version for a Trombone Octet, there are other arrangements of Silent Night available for a variety of instrumental ensembles. Debussy composed this breathtaking unaccompanied work in 1913, and it became the first solo work for the Böhm flute and the first solo work by a major composer since C.P.E. Bach almost 150 years earlier! The music allows wide latitude for interpretation and can really show off the musical imagination of the performer. The great French flautist Marcel Moyse is credited with adding phrasing and barlines to his friend Debussy's new work. In classical mythology, Syrinx was a nymph and a follower of Artemis, known for her chastity. Pursued by the amorous Greek god Pan, she ran to a river’s edge and asked for assistance from the river nymphs. In answer, she was transformed into hollow water reeds that made a haunting sound when the god’s frustrated breath blew across them. Pan cut the reeds to fashion the first set of pan pipes, which were thereafter known as syrinx. This work of 2 1/2 minutes for advanced performers can add a new dimension to your recital, as it is often performed offstage.

Flowers For Dorothy is a beautiful jazz waltz (in lead-sheet format here) from pianist Mark Massey's breakthrough jazz LP: API: Acoustic Piano International, performed by Mark Massey and his trio (Eric Stiller on acoustic bass and Aldo Bentivegna on drums). In the vein of great jazz waltzes like Someday My Prince Will come, Emily, and Waltz for Debby.ABOUT MARK:In 2018, the California State Assembly and the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors issued proclamations recognizing Mark Massey as a Jazz Living Legend. Jazz pianist-composer Mark Massey was born and raised in Lynwood, California, where he showed early talent on piano, trombone, and drums. During high school, he studied classical piano and played in the bands Synopsis (with future trumpet giant Wayne Bergeron), and Sabor (with Poncho Sanchez and the Banda Brothers). Mark played in the Pico Rivera Stage Band, which won First Place at the Hollywood Bowl Battle of the Bands. Mark graduated from California State University, Long Beach (with Bachelors and Masters degrees in Music), where he was recipient of the Carmen Dragon Fellowship for composition and he was dubbed A Young Giant by the National Association Of Jazz Educators. Mark has performed throughout the U.S., Europe, the former Soviet Union (in the 1980s), Russia (2001), the Far East and India. He has worked with Larry Carlton, David Benoit, Paul Horn, Hubert Laws, Louie Bellson, the Side Street Strutters, Phil Upchurch, L. Subramaniam, Freddie Hubbard, Maynard Ferguson, Yehudi Menuhin, Stéphane Grappelli, and Tony Williams. Mark was featured in The Four Pianos In Concert series along with pianists Paul Smith, Pete Jolly and Steve Allen. Mark Massey's debut CD, Acoustic Piano International, has received wide airplay on jazz radio. This piece commemorates the 160th year of the astounding system of stations and riders that was ingeniously devised to quickly deliver mail and other communications from America’s Missouri River frontier to the rapidly growing western territories. The music in this 4½-minute work is rambunctious, rhythmically unpredictable, and yet extremely exciting and listenable to the average audience member. The use of three woodblocks as the only percussion allude strongly to the clopping whirl of horses’ hooves, though not in a rhythmically mimicking manner. The opening motifs immediately develop into a manic ride across the Wild West, and lay the groundwork for all melodic content. These simple motifs smack of cowboy music, subtly borrowed from the movie theme to “Magnificent Seven†composed by Elmer Bernstein. Other influences for this piece include Aaron Copland’s harmonies and wide intervals, and the virtuosic brass band cornet writing of Gustav Holst and Malcolm Arnold. In the style of an operatic three-part overture, the middle slow section memorializes the tragic loss of 16 lives during the Paiute war in the summer of 1860. Being a rider or a station attendant for the Pony Express was perilous on any leg of the trail, but especially during that time in the Nevada Territory. In a very real way, all these men were iconic heroes of the American West.

This selection is one of the many arrangements from The Regis Bookshar Trumpet Ensemble's extensive music library which are being made available for the first time.Silent Night is probably the most popular Christmas carol ever written. It was composed in 1818 by Franz Xaver Gruber to lyrics by Joseph Mohr and was first performed on Christmas Eve at St. Nicholas parish church in Oberndorf, a small village in present-day Austria. A young Catholic priest, Father Joseph Mohr, had written the poem, Stille Nacht, in 1816 and had gone to Oberndorf in 1817. The melody was composed by Franz Xaver Gruber, schoolmaster and organist in the nearby village of Arnsdorf. On Christmas Eve, 1818, Mohr brought the words to Gruber and asked him to compose a melody and guitar accompaniment for that night's mass, after river flooding had possibly damaged the church organ. The church was eventually destroyed by repeated flooding and has since been replaced with the Silent-Night-Chapel.According to Gruber, Karl Mauracher, an organ builder who serviced the instrument at the Oberndorf church, was enamored with the song, and took the composition home with him to the Ziller Valley in Tyrol, Austria. From there, two traveling families of folk singers, the Strassers and the Rainers, included the tune in their shows. The Rainers were already singing it around Christmas, 1819, and once performed it for an audience that included Franz I of Austria and Alexander I of Russia. They also gave the first performance of the song in the United States in New York City in 1839. By the 1840's, the song was well known and was reported to be a favorite of Frederick William IV of Prussia. During this period, the melody changed slightly to become the version that is commonly heard today. The version of the melody that is generally used today is a slow, meditative lullaby, or pastoral, differing slightly from Gruber's original which has a moderate tempo. The song has been translated into about 140 languages and has been recorded by many singers across many music genres. It Is Well With My Soul is a hymn penned by hymnist Horatio Spafford and composed by Philip Bliss. First published in Gospel Songs No. 2 by Ira Sankey and Bliss (1876), it is possibly the most influential and enduring in the Bliss repertoire and is often taken as a choral model, appearing in hymnals of a wide variety of Christian fellowships. Horatio Spafford's original lyrics are included below. Professor M & M's Jive Detector is a super cool, very bluesy instrumental jazz hit (in lead sheet format here) from pianist Mark Massey's breakthrough jazz LP: API: Acoustic Piano International. (NOTE: A Bb leadsheet is also available.) The piano and tenor sax interact, with sax and piano doubling the main melody (performed by guest saxophonist Plas Johnson--famed Wrecking Crew sax/woodwind player who was featured on The Pink Panther Theme), plus sax and piano in blues interplay and counterpoint. It's a great vehicle for musical interplay, blues/jazz improvisation, and laid-back bluesy rhythm section grooves. The API track features Plas Johnson on sax backed by the Mark Massey trio, with Eric Stiller on acoustic bass and Aldo Bentivegna on drums.ABOUT MARK:In 2018, the California State Assembly and the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors issued proclamations recognizing Mark Massey as a Jazz Living Legend. Jazz pianist-composer Mark Massey was born and raised in Lynwood, California, where he showed early talent on piano, trombone, and drums. During high school, he studied classical piano and played in the bands Synopsis (with future trumpet giant Wayne Bergeron), and Sabor (with Poncho Sanchez and the Banda Brothers). Mark played in the Pico Rivera Stage Band, which won First Place at the Hollywood Bowl Battle of the Bands. Mark graduated from California State University, Long Beach (with Bachelors and Masters degrees in Music), where he was recipient of the Carmen Dragon Fellowship for composition and he was dubbed A Young Giant by the National Association Of Jazz Educators. Mark has performed throughout the U.S., Europe, the former Soviet Union (in the 1980s), Russia (2001), the Far East and India. He has worked with Larry Carlton, David Benoit, Paul Horn, Hubert Laws, Louie Bellson, the Side Street Strutters, Phil Upchurch, L. Subramaniam, Freddie Hubbard, Maynard Ferguson, Yehudi Menuhin, Stéphane Grappelli, and Tony Williams. Mark was featured in The Four Pianos In Concert series along with pianists Paul Smith, Pete Jolly and Steve Allen. Mark Massey's debut CD, Acoustic Piano International, has received wide airplay on jazz radio. This arrangement of Silent Night, or in German, Stille Nacht, would be a wonderful addition to any music library and could be performed for Christmas concerts, recitals, and, especially, church services. It is equally suitable for junior and senior high school students and even older musicians. Depending on their ability, younger musicians would also enjoy playing this selection. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (11 pages). This selection is one of the many arrangements from The Regis Bookshar Trumpet Ensemble's extensive music library which are being made available for the first time.Silent Night is probably the most popular Christmas carol ever written. It was composed in 1818 by Franz Xaver Gruber to lyrics by Joseph Mohr and was first performed on Christmas Eve at St. Nicholas parish church in Oberndorf, a small village in present-day Austria. A young Catholic priest, Father Joseph Mohr, had written the poem, Stille Nacht, in 1816 and had gone to Oberndorf in 1817. The melody was composed by Franz Xaver Gruber, schoolmaster and organist in the nearby village of Arnsdorf. On Christmas Eve, 1818, Mohr brought the words to Gruber and asked him to compose a melody and guitar accompaniment for that night's mass, after river flooding had possibly damaged the church organ. The church was eventually destroyed by repeated flooding and has since been replaced with the Silent-Night-Chapel.According to Gruber, Karl Mauracher, an organ builder who serviced the instrument at the Oberndorf church, was enamored with the song, and took the composition home with him to the Ziller Valley in Tyrol, Austria. From there, two traveling families of folk singers, the Strassers and the Rainers, included the tune in their shows. The Rainers were already singing it around Christmas, 1819, and once performed it for an audience that included Franz I of Austria and Alexander I of Russia. They also gave the first performance of the song in the United States in New York City in 1839. By the 1840's, the song was well known and was reported to be a favorite of Frederick William IV of Prussia. During this period, the melody changed slightly to become the version that is commonly heard today. The version of the melody that is generally used today is a slow, meditative lullaby, or pastoral, differing slightly from Gruber's original which has a moderate tempo. The song has been translated into about 140 languages and has been recorded by many singers across many music genres. The version sung by Bing Crosby in 1935, has sold over 10 million copies as a single.In this arrangement of Silent Night, Regis Bookshar has kept the basic form of this familiar Christmas carol, but has also included a descant during the third verse. Also, in addition to this version for a Brass Octet, consisting of 4 Trumpets, 1 French Horn and 3 Trombones, there are other arrangements of Silent Night available for a variety of instrumental ensembles. There are Quintets and Octets readily available for purchase. Please take the time to look for other versions of this composition.
