I go to Rome every year during my winter break from teaching. My favorite statue in the Galleria Borghese is Bernini's Apollo and Daphne. It is amazingly alive and beautiful. When the Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra of Boston asked me to write a work for string orchestra, I immediately thought of the fabulous Apollon Musagète by Stravinsky. Wouldn't it be fun to write a companion piece to the Stravinsky and call it Daphne? And since the Stravinsky Apollo is a ballet, my Daphne would be one as well, although an imaginary one. Daphne is in three sections. 1. Moderato ... Apollo struts around at a party, flirting with the nymphs and then suddenly he notices Daphne. He falls in love immediately. 2. Fuga ... Unnerved by Apollo's attention, Daphne flees. Apollo chases after her. 3. Largo ... Apollo catches up to Daphne and declares his love for her. She struggled to free herself from him and calls for help. To save Daphne from Apollo, her father Ladon, the river god, transforms Daphne into a laurel tree. Curtain.Audio link. SYMPHONY No.1, subtitled Fallen Angels and commissioned by Bruce Hangen and the Omaha Symphony Orchestra, is in three movements - I. Prince of Darkness II. Waltz!!!III. Lilith's Lament. The first movement begins in a dark, underground world, the world of the Prince of Darkness. Melodies emerge, growing, evolving gradually ... transforming ... finally, explosively ... into a syncopated danse macabre. The movement ends, agitatedly, in a quasi-scherzo fashion, scurrying from the lower depths of the orchestra to a heavenly cadence in C major. The second movement is a dance for the Prince and Lilith. [In talmudic lore, Lilith was regarded as a devilish being, and as Adam's first wife.] Each segment of this movement begins at first cautiously, and then very quickly reaches an ecstatic outburst of shouts and exclamations. A middle trio section offers a contrast of lyric introspection and contemplation. The third and last movement is rather sad and melancholy. Ironically, it is again in C major. The solo flute coupled with two bassoons is the main feature, with a Gil Evans-like wind choir floating in and out ... Published by Bo Ejeby Forlag - Digital (BJ.1326). 8.27 x 11.7 inches.No. 1 from Three Latin motets. A four parts a cappella setting of the old Tantum ergo text by Thomas Aquinas. The Three latin motets were composed for the communion service at Oscarskyrkan in Stockholm. They have also been performed at concerts and at various choral competitions throughout Europe. The pieces make up a small suite, where the hymns by Thomas Aquinas frame the ancient Ubi caritas as a centerpiece. Beginning with the epic multi-verse setting of Tantum ergo and ending with the dance-like ritornello structure of O sacrum convivium, the suite makes up a nice ternary form with the warm stillness of Ubi caritas in the middle. While composing, I aimed to evoke the antiquity of the texts by assigning them to mock-plainchant melodies and then treating them in a cantus firmus setting. All three pieces are written in a neo-romantic style. The Tantum ergo is used in veneration of the holy sacrament and consists of the final three stanzas of a longer text, known as the Pange lingua. The words express the doctrine of bread and wine and its transformation into the blood and body of Christ in the eucharist ceremony. - Par Olofsson, musician in Oscarskyrkan, Stockholm. The mystagogic character of Recitativo and its melodic phraseology in a rhetoric or hieratic style, is followed by the constant obsession of the Ostinato. Horizontal lines are developed interruptedly rouns the steady transformation of motive's repetition, which escalates the course of the work to a sudden outburst of an polyphonic :Toccata. Everett,Mark Olson, conductors; and Nora Skuta, piano, the Slovak Radio Symphony Winds, Kirk Trevor,conductor. These three marvelous piano soloists served as the inspiration for the work. Theconcerto bears the dedication “for Walter Simmons, a hero for the cause of American music.â€Musicologist Walter Simmons has been an inspirational and passionate advocate for seriousAmerican concert music for nearly his entire life. Through his tireless efforts as author, critic, recordand concert producer, and lecturer, Walter has brought myriad composers and works to muchdeservedattention.The basic musical material for the entire work is presented near the outset, the pitches Eb – D – G –Ab – E. This cell is used throughout the rest of the concerto both motivically, in transformation, andas a harmonic structural device. Its harmonic identity creates the mix of tonal/modal and atonalconstructs that are a preoccupation of my music. The concerto’s title provided the poetic ideabehind the musical development. Though more or less equal with the ensemble in the firstmovement, the piano clearly takes over as leader in the second and third movements as the goaldirectedformal narrative of the movements becomes more obvious.The first movement, Murky Waters, is a free fantasy in which the piano and ensemble “unpack†themusical potential of the basic material. A number of melodic ideas emerge—some lyrical and somedisjunct. A brief coda prepares for the next movement.The second movement, The Forgotten, is a lament led by the piano. The harmonic colors of thepiano’s sustaining sounds interact with the more linear textures of the winds and brass.The third movement, Casting Infinity, is purposeful and structured as a march with trio.
