The Candy Cakewalk is one in a series of ten Easter-themed duets each written in a different American dance style. The Cakewalk was popular in the early twentieth century but its origins go back to slave plantations in the nineteenth century where dancers would often compete for a prize of cake. The music was a marriage of European March and African-American syncopation and was a forerunner of Ragtime. The Candy Cakewalk is suitable for players at an intermediate level and above, with the accessible key and range balanced by the fast tempo, some syncopated rhythms and accidentals. The playing-time is around one and a half minutes, but can be lengthened by adding repeats at the performerâ€™s discretion. This version is arranged as a duet for one Flute and one Viola. The words and music of Steal Away to Jesus are credited to Wallis Willis, a Native American freedman from Oklahoma. A local minister transcribed the song and within a few years it became a firm gospel favourite. The words have a meaning beyond the spiritual, with hidden references to the Underground Railway of the time that helped escaped slaves cross to Canada. In more recent times Steal Away to Jesus was arranged by Michael Tippett in 1944 and recorded famously by Mahalia Jackson and Nat King Cole. Steal Away to Jesus is simply arranged in a key and range best suited to the instruments. The song is played several times as a ballad, with ever changing accompaniment.
