His latest collections 'In the Zoo” and 'In the Zoo 2” were great fun and had the bonus of concealing useful technical studies in the music so that young players could improve their technique without knowing they were working hard! Aleksey wondered how he could follow these books and decided to choose animals that few people even knew existed. So, in 'Funny Animals”, for violin and piano, we meet such creatures as the Panda Ant, the Aye-Aye and the Dumbo Octopus! The animals are introduced with texts and pictures by his friend Magdalena Hoffmann. Aleksey says that, if you only want to play the music, that's great but he provides lots of theatrical instructions for a stage performance. 'In my Garden 1” shows Igudesman in another light, that of a violin teacher, providing excellent material for younger violin students. Each piece depicts a fruit or vegetable to be found growing in the garden and includes a short poem (in English, French and German) and pictures to inspire the pupil and help them to interpret the music. But these are not just fun to play - they conceal useful study material to improve technique like staccato or lyrical smooth bowing. Clever use of double stops (one note always an open string) will help the student make a more rewarding sound and inspire confidence. Grade 1 students can enjoy some of the pieces and still be dipping into it a year or two later. The pictures one sees are moods, feelings and the inner secrets of a person. After one round, one returns to the beginning of the inner gallery and starts walking faster. The musical material repeats in a more compact way, where smaller fragments are seen or “felt”. The next round is even faster and so on, culminating in a frantic run through the imaginary gallery.
